I LOL’d. He’s got some good points. It’s not that I dislike Instagram, but I don’t like trite faux aftereffects. I do like the smplicity and speed Instagram gives to posting photos. I love his references to the Eiffel Tower and drop shadow. (Although drop shadow actually has a useful effect, i.e. to make text standout from the background.)

Speaking of olde-timey photos, my National Guard armory now has 3 photos of an old unit during the punitive raid, war with Spain, and WWI. They’re each the classic military group portrait with the whole unit standing close packed on the parade field. Unfortunately, the prints are too small to see much detail of any individual, but the uniforms and flags are recognizable. I wonder if in another 100 years people will look back and be amazed at how photos look from the present.

And the black speck in the lower right of the sun isn’t schmutz on my lens. It’s the big sunspot.

I was shooting from Red Rock Park near Gallup, NM. The shade 11 welding lens that I brought was giving really bad results, but luckily there was a couple of eclipse chasers visiting from Chicago and they let me have one of their flimsy plastic viewers that worked out great. My filter holder was an oak plank that I drilled to mount on my tripod plate and hold the camera at one end. I also worked very well for swapping filters unexpectedly.

/argh! why don’t images work for me?

It turned out to be the filter I was using. There was a nice couple of eclipse chasers from Chicago also viewing at Red Rocks Park near Gallup, NM, and they gave me a flimsy plastic filter that worked much better.

Ok, I assume you’re shooting on manual exposure so things don’t get screwey from one frame to the next, but what do you do about focus?

Ok, so here’s a typical test shot of mine. 🙁 I think I’m going to try the 85/1.8 instead of the 55-250/3.5-5.6. I’ve got it stopped down to about f/11, but it still doesn’t focus very well. I’ll probably try switching to raw tomorrow, and also wireless remote and mirror lockup.

The gardens look great. Sounds like it was a great trip.

I’ll let you know when I figure it out.

/That’s why I’ve been avoiding this thread.

After looking over your new site again, I’d say that the missus and carnies are your favorite things. 😉

Actually, I’d say that your favorite things are the inner workings of stuff and repurposing old things into something new. From resurrecting cameras to ideas for getting free studio space as well as shots of cars and gears…

Anyone else care to comment on what Orionid’s pics say about him? (Of course, we have the unfair advantage of reading your autobiographical posts here.)

Well, my friends who live in Page will be out of town for the weekend, so I’m going to head up to Gallup and save 10 hours driving. Camp out over night and pass through Albuquerque Monday on the way to visit family in Kansas City.

I did stop by the welding store today to pickup a shade 11 filter. The guy at the store knew exactly what I was up to when I mentioned I was looking for a shade. He said a lot of people were buy 14s, and we both agreed that that level was a bit much. Just in case you’re wondering shade 11 is about 14 1/3 stops, while shade 14 is 18 1/2 stops. Now the cost savings of a photographic filter is astounding, as the welding filter was only $3.75, however it’s not quite neutral density. There’s a decidely green cast to the sun. Tomorrow I’ll try adjusting the white balance. Or I could just set it to monochrome.

Page is an option. I’ve got a college friend there who’s the deputy director at the hydro plant. I came back home via Page after FarkCon in Vegas. I was hoping not to drive that far, but I could adjust my schedule to go that far. Plus the bluffs at the west side of the city over looking the gorge would give an unimpeded view of the setting sun and eclipse. Ok, time to remap my route.

Edit: Wow, Page is about 5 hours more driving. Yikes. That means I’ll need to leave home on Saturday or possibly Friday. Hmmm…

Does buying lottery tickets with lottery ticket winnings count as recusive? ‘Cause if so, I can knock out 1, 3, 4, 5, & 6 all at my local gas station/convenience store/burritor?a. I’m sure they’ve also got some obsolete things there as well, like newspapers for sale.

Um, Stapler, I’m not sure that your link loaded correctly for me. I got a talk show about entertainment. I didn’t really notice any photography advice. (The subtitles are hard to read with the low quality video.) The eyebrow beam seems like an interesting super-power however.

I just start at the bottom of the thread and work my way up screen after I post my own pics. Then I check back in a few days to catch any posted after me. I just vote for which ever photos I like and think they fit the theme. There are lots of things that could make me vote for a picture: theme appropriateness, bright colors, good compositions, nice shapes, fan service, etc. I like to start at the bottom, so as not to judge the slow people to harshly, as I might be jaded during the voting process. Like for “sun in frame,” I can only vote for so many horizons -15-minutes-before-sunset before I’ve had enough. Originality of subject gets high marks from me. C’est la vie.

It would be nice to see if there is a correlation between order of appearance in the thread, i.e. speed of posting, and vote getting. Might be hard to isolate that variable, since the people who put more effort into making good pics probably put more effort into posting them rapidly. Is there a statistician in the house?

Ok, nobody let Orionid see this. He’s got too many projects already.

I too got the impression that the photographer wanted more money from the last scene in the film.

The Taliban outlawed more than just photography. They outlawed all images of animate creatures and casette tapes as well. It made it easy to tell who was non-Taliban. If I truck driver had pictures cut from Indian or Pakistani fashion magazines taped inside his door or music tapes, then he wasn’t Taliban, or if he was he wasn’t a very devout member. Also, the same with locals who would mug for the camera when ever I pulled mine out, and it was only a little Canon A550.

In Kosovo, our public affairs office actually had a battery powered printer for instant portraits. CSB.

We should have a special Farktography Prize for anyone who gets them all!

How about a date with a real live human being of the winner’s preferred gender? Anyone managing to cram all those in is really in need of a life.

    I’ll take that bet!

I was going to day it’s been years since my last date, but I did have a date in Hawaii following a friend playing matchmaker, but it didn’t lead to anything.

I had more fun hanging out with Plamadude for an afternoon of bad photography and great conversation. And, no that didn’t lead to anything either. Although, if any AZ or NM farkers want to get together around Gallup for eclipse watching, that’s my planned location.
