ParticipantDang it! How did I miss this theme? Plus, what’s up with the low vote totals?

ParticipantIf we allow the F-word, how about the N-word? J/k. I’m not that guy.
All I got from that link was a Chinese girl and a panda statue and some disclaimer about looking for photos.Yoyo
ParticipantI didn’t know you lived in the area. I suppose I should have announced my plans here. I might have been in Orionid’s neighborhood as well.
She was a fabulous MC for most of the event, and Mr. Keith Price from the Morning Jolt satellite radio show took over for about the 3rd quarter of the event. I’ve been an MC before as well, so I know it’s not as easy as most people make it look. You need to fill enough time for lighting, sound, and costume changes, while keeping the audience interested in the main acts and not yourself. I mean, come on, who really watches Idol for Ryan Seacrest?
I’ve been published in print news papers (cartoonist), scholarly publications (IEEE, assistant author), and military organizational news letters (photo-journalist)(should be available via the FOIA, but good luck finding it).
I checked schedules for events in NYC (i.e. Queens and Brooklyn, am I the only person who doesn’t just think Manhattan immediately when NYC is mentioned?) but everything was earlier in the year. Likewise DC events were no where near the actual riot date.
I only spent 2 days and two nights in NYC. I highly recommend the Sleep Inn in Jamaca if you have a car and want complementary off street parking. Thursday was Brooklyn with the Children’s Museum, Brooklyn (Art) Museum with a fabulous display of John Singer Sargent watercolors, and a too quick lap around the Botanic Garden. Then Friday was Queens with the Hall of Science, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Museum of the Moving Image, the opening night Pride event at Pier 26, and skyline shots from New Jersey right before last call when they turn out the lights on the Empire State Building.
If that sounds like a whirlwind tour, DC was even quicker. Arlington in the morning (including getting saluted by the guard and sergeant of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns) and then the national mall in the afternoon (although that sort of sucked with all the construction going on at the WWII memorial and Washington monument and preping for Independence day festivities).

ParticipantThe reviews from B&H buyers all seemed quite positive. Also, the “pros” would be likely to rip on a Rebel, but I’m fine with it. Having identical sensors would simplify stereo work.

Participant18-55 II 😀
When I broke my original kit lens, I initially replaced it with a 28-90 35mm consumer kit lens because it was available and economical, and I wanted a zoom centered around 55mm which was the dividing line between my normal zoom and telephoto zoom.

ParticipantI even made prints of selected photos from my 5 1/2 week road trip, including 3 of these.

Our master (mistress?) of ceremonies for the evening.
Even the Empire State Building was getting in on the action. I took this shot from New Jersey looking east across the Hudson river.Yoyo
ParticipantFTA: “YOUR EQUIPMENT NO LONGER DEFINES YOU, YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS DO”
Hasn’t this always been true?
I think someone had 1,500 words to fill last month, and being a photographer instead of a journalist we ended up with this claptrap.

ParticipantThey could all use a sammich. Also, they seem to have picked up more pigment being in subtropical Asia compared to near-arctic Britain.
I could show you some before and afters from my own visit to Afghanistan if you like.

ParticipantAre you hand-holding these shots, because they look awfully blurry.
I too have extension tubes as well as +1, 2 ,4, & 10 diopter filters.
I like the tubes for when I have plenty of time to prepare everything and take lots of pics and adjust things just so. I usually go with the 50/1.4 in front of the extenders.
The filters are my go-to macro device for when I’m out and about. I like the +4 be itself on my 18-55 kit lens for food photography while dining. That combo is quick and easy, but there can be some serious purple fringing. It only gets worse with more magnification.

ParticipantSo there I was, it was early April, 2013, in New Orleans. The Big Easy. Mardi Gras central. Bourbon Street. We were all upstairs in a rented room above some cheap gin joint that sold overpriced hooch to tourists with more money that taste, and who should I run into but the legen-wait-for-it-dary Drew Curtis of Drew Curtis’ Fark.com (not to be confused with the similarly sounding named but entirely different yet still copyrighted Farktography.net) and his faithful (and perhaps now much more network savvy) sidekick Mike Andrews. I was packing my Canon model T2i, and that night she was sporting the Tamron 10-24 zoom and 580EX Speedlite. You heard that right. I was armed for party pics, and party pics I got (including a couple shots of some groomsmen flashing their buttocks that are a bit too scary for the light of day or sober minds). So the three of us were bellied up to the bar and the topic of conversation turned to a filehost for the photos of this epic rager that will be known in the annals of history as FarkConIII or maybe Fark World Party New Orleans Edition (we’re really not settled on a name yet, and the thing has been over for about 5 weeks now). Anyway, to make a long story short, Drew and Mike said that since bandwidth was now so cheap, Fark might start hosting images itself. It’s true, I tell you. I heard it with my own ears. And I’ve got the pics to prove it. (I’m just not sure which thread I put a link to them in.)

ParticipantI have no idea exactly what these can lenses are, but I’d be happy to have an Orionid custom. Canon EOS, the wider the focal length the better. Did you ever put together the kit I sent for X-mas? Pics…
Also, where do you get glass for these?

ParticipantAlso, SolidWorks is popular because it’s cheap. And by cheap I mean in the single-digit thousand dollar range. I just priced out IronCad and it’s $4k. Currently I’m using ViaCAD because it’s about $80 (and I haven’t crashed it yet).
Try taking a CAD class at your local community college so you could get a student edition of something for cheap or make nice with the computer guy and get a bootleg version for free.

ParticipantThis thread is TL/DR. I use Shapeways for my 3D printing. It’s cheaper than a big capital outlay and worrying about consumables. It does miss the instantaneous gratification. Shapeways has very good fine detail. (I was able to print usable M58x0.75 threads.) If you just want to make toy soldiers, get some lead and a meting pot, then make rubber molds from existing minis.
