ParticipantI’ll admit it. I tried this out the first time I was in the bathroom after seeing the video.
I did NOT however, take any pictures using a phone, with the camera visible in the frame, or a toilet in the background.
Now, since we all know that the closer you get the bigger things appear, with a short focal length, this trick could really end up giving the Lisa Simpson, i.e. small body-big head, effect. So, if I ever get a portrait gig, I’ll be sure to stick w/ the 85mm (136mm eq.). I suppose if all you’re after is the head shot, while most of the body is not visible, then it doesn’t really matter how huge someone’s noggin looks.

ParticipantI agree with you ennuipoet, and saw the piece …The only thing that bothers me about the skydive photo shoot is who the hell decided to pay for that? I can’t imagine that it was cheap. I wonder if they got the result for which they were expecting?
I’m going to guess that HTC paid for the project so they could make a 2 lame TV advertizements. The whole “fashion shoot” was most likely manufactured solely as a plot for the ads. I finally saw the second commerical with the other photographer today. It’s just as bad as the first with the same lingering questions.
I’m not sure if I mentioned and questioned it before, but if this new phone is so great at video and still simultaniously, and there were two guys using them, why the need for the camera men with the pro grade helmet mounted rigs? I’m thinking that there is more smoke and mirrors to this ad scheme than just the model’s costume and the other parachuters with smoke bombs.
Either way, I’m not buying a phone for the camera, and I’m certainly not buying this one, even though I seriously want to ditch my Blackberry POS right now.

ParticipantWell, a second body would be nice, but I would want it to be the same as my current body to simplify stereo 3D photography, and then I would have to get another 50mm lens and RF remote.

ParticipantFirst things first: I too have the 18-55, 55-250, 28/1.8, 50/1.4, 85/1.8, & Tamron 10-24. Just so you know what I’m choosing from.
I was photographing a cheer leading competition for a friend whose daughter was on the squad, both the EF-S 18-55 and EF-S 55-250 were the wrong lens for the size of the gym. The telephoto was too narrow at 55mm to get shots of the whole team, and the standard was too wide at 55 to get individual close-ups when they were at the far side of the gym floor. I was swapping back and forth like a crazy person. A similar thing happened when I was at a blacksmith convention where I wanted to get full shots of the lecturer as well as detail shots of his work pieces.
On both those days, I wish I would have had the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, or something is a similar focal length range. The new EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS looks really tempting as well. I however still harbor illusions that I might someday upgrade to a 1 series body, plus I prefer the larger apertures provided by prime lenses, so I’m not planning to expand my collection of EF-S lenses anytime soon.
Canon seems to have expanded the EF-S line to a total of 8 since last I looked. Seems like the prelude to a new mirrorless APS-C body, if you ask me. The EF-S aren’t just the low budget consumer grade kit lenses they started out as. The EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM lists for $30 more than the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM.
Bottom line, if it were me, I would do it. I’d probably offer $200 to start with, but go to $220 with no hesitation at all.

ParticipantWhat about dogs named Rusty?

ParticipantLove the purple one Orionid. Reminds me of Van Gogh or maybe Renoir.

ParticipantIn the interests of fairness (and myself 😈 ), scratch anything specifically American (no, not the participants):
– People of Walmart/Late Night Waffle House, outside of Walmart or Waffle House
– Florida/ Things You’d Expect to Find in FloriduhFor clarity : Euro, Afro and Australasian Farktographers have too little frame of reference (and a reasonable local facsimile would probably go into the voters’ WTF? file.) and NOT because the US has exclusive licence to thickos and rednecks. 😛
In defense of “Things You’ld Expect to Find in Florida,” or Floridiana perhaps, all Farkers, and consequently Farktographers, should know these sort of things from all the Florida tagged threads. E.g. teachers sleeping with students, atheistic Christian ministers, immigrants, old people, Early Bird Specials at restaurants, swampy things,…
http://www.fark.com/hlsearch?qq=florida&o=0&limlt=0&limwp=-1&limtt=35&comment=&url=&email=&name=&website=[/url][/i]BTW, WTF does “thickos” mean? That’s a colloquialism that I’m not familiar with. (Actually, I already looked it up.)
Edit: The guy pictured at the top of this page looks to me like I might find him in Florida between the grey hair, wrinkles, cuffed hems, and sweat.

ParticipantThe only time I saw the aurorae was in Socorro, New Mexico. Massive flares in 2000 or 2001. They were mostly red with a few greens. At first I and some friends thought that it was just the local forest on fire accounting for the glow on the horizon, then someone got a call from a friend at the university observatory, so we all headed out out of town to Box Canyon for darker skies. About 50 people showed up for the viewing, which is pretty good considering the university is only about 1500 people and there was no advance notice or prior planning.

ParticipantOk, I have to know, what doubler and what lens?

ParticipantWell, in my day, we didn’t have the internet. You plugged your 2400 baud modem into the phone line and dialed into the local BBS.
You had a 2400 bps modem? Lucky duck. I was stuck w/ a 1200 on my XT.
And regarding current equipment, my laptop is 5 years old and physically wearing out. I must visit the computer guy at my alma mater for suggestions on the particulars of a new machine. Although, I should probably quit being so lazy and open this one up and put in more memory while I’m at it for travel use, etc.

ParticipantHappy Earthday birthday! When I saw your first photo, I thought to myself, there’s something not quite neutral about his neutral filter; the white balance is definitely off there. The touched-up image looks great.

ParticipantI had to reduce the jpg quality twice before Fark would accept it from Flickr, even though the three files I uploaded were 215 kB, 189 kB, and finally 170 kB. I use IrfanView.
Flickr’s image processing is extraordinarily size-inefficient. For images with a lot of detail, I find quite often I need to create a 640px wide image myself and embed the original instead of using the flickr resized ones (and even in that case you need to use the original, not the medium 640 option).
So, how do I do that using Flickr? I’m already doing the resize myself before uploading (multiple times in this particular contest). I’m just unsure how to embed the original. Or do I learn to use Skydrive to host for Farktography?

ParticipantGlad my battery was dead this afternoon from taking pics of botanical and memorial gardens by the time sunset rolled around. Otherwise, I’d be looking like half the pics posted. A lot of good shots this week, but after a dozen orange sunsets, the mystery is gone.
I too had a heck of a time getting my tree photo to fit under the Fark size limit. I had to reduce the jpg quality twice before Fark would accept it from Flickr, even though the three files I uploaded were 215 kB, 189 kB, and finally 170 kB. I use IrfanView.
