For this sample set, the hypothesis (“Early posting garners more votes”) is likely to be false. The “p” value is a measure of the confidence in the correlation. Lower p’s mean that there is less likely to be an error. Statisticians think that a p < 0.05 is a good value (if I recall my stats classes correctly).

Could it be as simple as “early posts are near the top of the page and therefore everybody sees them”?

Yeah, when you post late, some of the top pics already have 20 or more votes. That’s a lot to catch up to. Some people will return to the thread and vote for new entries but a whole lot won’t.

I’m just hoping greenlight time will get moved forward far enough so I can post before leaving for work; I have no net access at work and with the commute included, it adds a good 10 hours to the time before I can post if, like yesterday, the thread hits the main page just after I’ve gone out!

I’ve had Picasa for a few weeks, to give it an honest shot. I like how fast and smooth it is.

To be fair, I think the OP was looking for Mac software, and Picasa is Windows only. I can’t contribute to the Mac side myself either – sorry.

But for Windows: check out ACDSee Pro. I was averse because I remember the weak versions from years ago, but today’s software has answered most of my needs and then some. (If it could handle my NEFs, I’d be all set…)

Well, I finally got home to post mine 🙁 Kept refreshing this morning hoping it’d show up long enough to miss my train but finally I had to leave. Well maybe a few people will still see my two green pics… Hope it’ll show up a bit earlier in the future!

Yeah, I’ve seen them show up a lot earlier as well, it’s often been there when I get up (on European time here). Oh well,

Is it just me, or did ‘Green’ not get greenlighted? I’m just a liter, and I’ve only posted in the farktography threads two or three times, but I had a couple cool submissions for this one 🙁 I can’t afford to go totalFark when I just want to take part a couple times a year! 🙁

I use my D50 all the time. I’m not sure if you could find all three of those lenses for under $250 though. If I need my camera cleaned it goes into a shop so I can’t help you there. I’ve taken about 2500 pictures since January and haven’t had any problems. The battery lasts a long time too if you don’t use the flash or LCD.

Thanks veruca! That was a pretty nifty day in the Muir Woods. Hardest thing to do was to handhold the camera; me without my tripod – I still get the gibblies thinking about it.

Although, I have to admit that the very late entry by Agent EvidencE (http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLink=1962742#19762236) is a much better view of the effect than what I did.

Young and Old. Hmmmm. And then Green. Double Hmmmm.

although i’ve not pursued it – anyone is welcome to interpret this – i recall a specific calvin & hobbes cartoon where his dad explains electricity as magic…so of course calvin shows his mom by turning on a lamp.

    “look mom, magic!”
“what did your father tell you this time?!…”

    heh.

    cheers.

I just thought I’d pop in and say hello. Hello! It’s weird being back after so long. It almost feels like walking back into class after being out with Mono for 8 weeks.

I missed you guys! Dial up/no internet is no way to live.

Gone a month and still no tag! 👿 Seriously what gives? Is it really that hard to add a tag? I see they have added a tag for fark publicity…

I’m gonna stop now. I have been home for almost 5 days and I still have to finish unpacking…

sorry to hear about the hangover 😉

    welcome back!! *hug*

and thanks for the hangover commiseration (i think you were talking to me 🙂 ) – feeling much better this morning!!!

Thanks! ha ha, yep that was for you. I haven’t used the chat thingy yet, but the little message box is cool.

I guess this board isn’t too busy tonight 🙂 I just realized that MIT is having trouble (where I host my photos) and the photos are only loading some of the time. bleh.

Anyway, lots of very cool takes on the theme tonight!

i don’t know what you’re printing with, but i disagree. i get beautiful prints from my printer, and i would never trust walmart/target/sam’s club with anything other than snapshots.

but that is just me, and what the heck do i know about anyone else’s printing needs. 🙂

Well, part of that may be because you’re not looking at the prints very closely. Maybe I’ve just become jaded because of all the crap I have to scan because of my job, but I can spot an inket print just by glancing at it. (The really high-end $50,000 inkjet printers do a pretty good job, but I doubt that’s what you’re talking about.) Also — try scanning an inkjet print sometime. (It’s even better if you can get the same photo printed on silver for comparison). Notice the compressed histogram? It’s that way because the tonal range is nowhere near as wide as that of silver. And look at all those little dots! Also, again, unless you’re using archival inks and paper, your inkjet prints won’t last more than a few years without fading. Not a big deal if you’re sticking it on the fridge, but a really big deal if you’re selling it to someone for $50.

I just bought the D50 so I’ll let you know how it goes. Btw, I spent a lot of time looking for the best deal, and finally ended up buying the body only at focuscamera for 517 including s/h. That’s about 50-100 less than other prices I could find, and there were no problems.

    Hi ya’ll

I’m checking back into this project. I’d like to state the oblivious and recommend, since you’re getting a very good response for this, that Veruca be the Pacific Northwest rep. on this. I said stating the oblivious ’cause I ain’t done nothing to help and Veruca has always been in it. So I bow to the TFers. I’m still lookin’ forward to seein’ the results. I know, by the talent shown in Farktography any Photoshops, that it’s gonna be great!

Hey Slowpoke, is your 70-200mm a constant aperture? IE f/2.8 at all ranges? I am not too familar with the Canon offerings.

Does the Canon 2x have a mcro mode? My Vivitar 2x for the K-mount does and I have gotten very good results with it. I used it with a Sigma zoom for my light bukb macros in the contest a couple of weeks back.

I should have disclaimed, as others have before, that I’ve been a lurker (and remain a liter) for quite a while and have only recently been really getting into digital photography, but I’d like to think that my early and future submissions have been/will be worthy of your attention. I’ve seen some amazing stuff through Farktography that has really inspired my own fledgling work.
