ParticipantThat was you?!?
I assumed it was Google for removing their ads. 🙂

ParticipantDuly noted! 😯

ParticipantA ferrite toroid is basically just an iron donut. It’s sometimes used for noise suppression on cables (it’s that big lump you see on the ends) and is also used in inductors.
In the picture on that page, it’s the black donut-shaped thing with the blue-and-white wires wrapped around it on the bottom left of the board.

ParticipantI’ll take a look if you want, rav.

ParticipantOK, thanks for the feedback, everyone. I’ll try not to be so paranoid in the future. 😉

ParticipantThanks for the reassurance, Els. 🙂

ParticipantI have to assume from the lack of responses here that either 1) this topic is of no interest to anyone else; or 2) I’ve managed to come off as self-promoting or AW’ing.
I’m always a bit paranoid about the latter when posting online because my sense of humor is a bit dry and sarcastic (Dry sarcasm on Fark?!? The hell you say!) and it sometimes doesn’t translate well into the written word. So, if that’s the case, let me apologize, because it wasn’t my intention. I have no motivation to drive anyone to my site (especially now that I’ve removed ads) since it only contains my son’s football pics and my farktography entries, the latter of which you’ve already seen and the former which no one here would care about.
I’ve always been curious as to what kind of revenue an average joe could generate from Google ads (or what level of traffic it would take to generate non-trivial revenue), and I thought maybe others might be as well and that’s the only reason I shared. So, without further ado, I’ll let this thread die in peace. 🙂

Participantorionid, U-Man is right. It was set up by my electrical wizard brother-in-law who is now in Florida for 6 months. I think they were tall terminals with wires and copper tubing coming off of it. You would love going through his barn. He could tell you more things that you can do electrically that you have not even thought of. He also has a collection of WWII military radio communication “stuff.” I’ll e-mail him and ask for an explanation and get back to you.
Let me know when the barn tour tickets go on sale! Sounds awesome. Heck, I’d be up for just the price of admission (impromptu lecture) with or without the tour. 🙂
Or, you could build a Jacob’s Ladder
Or, combine your love of lethal voltage and music and build your own plasma speaker.
And congrats on the win, Ranger Joe/cameraflage!

Participantharpo, I’ve never done anything professionally (or even an amateur show, for that matter), so I can’t offer you any advice. I just wanted to say congrats on the opportunity. How exciting! And word of mouth is usually pretty effective in small towns, so who knows what could come of it…

Participant…we all more or less like and support one another…
We? WE!?! Who are you to be putting words in my mouth?! Why, I oughta…
j/k of course. 🙂 I like the comraderie around here, too. And I sensed hostility in some recent PS contests. I don’t even wanna know what it’s like behind the scenes there.

ParticipantOK, after viewing original size I can see that the sparks are a separate event from the rest of the lighting, but you can’t really tell that at smaller sizes. Good job getting those two exposures closely aligned.

ParticipantInteresting, thanks for the response. I will try the CP next time. And I do almost always use a lens hood.
I’ve never really noticed the effects you refer to in my shots, but I’m not exactly shooting at the level you do, either.
CauseISaidSo
Participantorionid, can you describe the setup for your Attitudes shot? How’d you trigger at just the right time?

ParticipantI’m conflicted on the issue. On the one hand, I think stricter/more narrowly defined requirements can lead to more variety and interesting pictures. On the other hand, I hate to see anyone unable to participate, especially our regulars, and if the regulars are left out, you know a lot of the casuals will be, too.
Personally, I hate to fail, and I am compelled to submit 3 photos per week for my own reasons–I hem and haw back and forth on this point, but I think I’d rather post a few *meah* shots and suffer the votes than not participate at all for lack of what I deem to be interesting.
Case in point, this shot was part of a set I took just to have a 3rd shot, but it was well received and my best vote getter that week (8th place, “Artistic Bent”).
I’m the same way about posting 3 entries, for reasons I can’t quite fathom.
And I have a similar anecdote about a 3rd entry – my Christmas Balls entry from Optimus Prime. That was literally a last-minute, “what can I shoot for my third entry?”, 3-takes-and-that’s-good-enough shot. And it came in 4th. The car entry, which I carefully planned and spent 2-3 hours and 50+ takes to get just the look I wanted, was my worst performer that week.

ParticipantThanks, U-Man! It’s supposedly the largest show in the state. They gather donations from property & business owners along the creek there and then blow it all up every year. I think the budget is generally in the $110K range. My inlaws have a condo there so I just setup on shore and click click click. The hardest part is rationing my Makers & coke so it lasts through the show. 🙂
After the fireworks comes the secondary show – all those boats have to turn around and head back out into the main part of the lake. It’s a line of traffic that lasts for literally 2-3 hours.
Oh, and if you’re interested, I’ve got one more shot from there online that I used for All Night Long. That’s actually my favorite of all. If silverstag‘s Blue & Gold theme goes live, I’m going to kick myself for already using it.
