ParticipantOh, and clouddancer – I don’t have any Hoyas but I’ve also heard that they’re a good value for the money. And it’s my opinion that warming filters (or most other “artistic” filters for that matter) are more for film than digital since you can get pretty much the same effects in post with digital. But that’s just my opinion and YMMV.

ParticipantUV filters are pretty much useless for a digital shooter…
That’s probably mostly true, but I’ve found them useful for a couple of reasons:
1) Haze. I’ve taken comparison shots of sunny, hazy landscapes and saw a noticable improvement (not spectacular, but noticable) in long-distance clarity with the filter vs without.
2) Lens protection/cheap insurance. If nothing else, I’d rather scratch a sub-$100 filter (which I’ve done) than an obscenely-priced lens. I keep a UV filter on all my lenses for just this reason.
But now that this subject has come up, this is the second time this week I’ve read something about the uselessness or even disadvantage to using a UV filter. Can someone who feels that way expound on the topic a little? I understand the argument against putting a cheap filter in front of expensive glass, but is there more to it than that?

ParticipantThat’s pretty bizarre, caradoc. Have you used the different computer/browser combination previously to login to Fark? If so, you might try clearing out all cookies and browser history. Failing that, it sounds like it may be an issue on Fark’s end and I’m not sure where to even start getting that solved (perhaps Elsinore knows a tech contact?).

ParticipantYep, width is limited to 640 and height to 1100 (I think – I’m positive about the width). I don’t think you’ll find anyone here that’s particularly pleased with that limit, but it is what it is.

ParticipantI’d say that’s more of a feature than a glitch! And the little man in the middle seems to have a preference for k‘s.

ParticipantVery nice. Especially like the first one.
I’m with zincprincess on the ice canoes. Ice, water, and sub-zero temps don’t sound like a fun combo to me, but y’all can have at it.

ParticipantCongrats, olavf! IIRC, you’ve been on a bit of a streak lately, haven’t you?
orionid, congrats on the 2nd, but don’t you think half those votes should go to kestrana? 🙂
I don’t know if you’ll check in here or not, trentchau, but I can’t believe your Daughter of Morpheus didn’t do better than it did. It must’ve been the thumb size. My honest first thought when I popped it larger was, “Good grief, I’ve got to compete with THIS?!?”
Speaking of streaks, that was my 5th in a row where I had a top ten. I am, as the kids say (or at least used to), stoked! Anybody got a sling? I think I might’ve sprained something patting myself on the back. 🙂
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantJust wait until the kids are a little older. I got exactly two takes at the flying shot before my 14-year-old said “I’m outta here.”

ParticipantI’m not a fan if used for that type of purpose. Some anti-noise software use blur to smooth noise, and that would be fair, but just blurring an image is a little different.
Yeah, I reckon I already knew the answer to that. I’ll be a good boy and stick to normal post techniques.

ParticipantI believe the guideline regarding over-saturation would be considered one of those “other farktography guidelines” your photo should conform to. This doesn’t mean you can’t adjust saturation on your photo, it just shouldn’t result in overly unrealistic or cartoonish images.
How does everyone feel about blur, if it’s applied to the photo as a whole and not selectively? The effect I’m playing with results in a dreamy, non-cartoonish image that’s photographically possible, just not what was originally captured. I know, I know, I’m not proud to be even asking about using it, but I’m down to the wire with next to nothing this week. 🙁

ParticipantA polarizing filter is supposed to help quite a bit with reflections off the snow. If you’re going to let the camera set the exposure, you might try switching to spot metering instead of evaluative. On a Canon, this is indicated by the single small dot as opposed to the dot with the surrounding circle. That forces the camera to meter only on the center point instead of also evaluating the surroundings. That way your target (your son) will be properly exposed, even if the snow gets blown out. Other than that, the alternative is to find a set of exposure settings that produce a decent picture (you can look at the historgram to get an idea), set it to manual exposure and then duplicate those settings so it’s consistent.

ParticipantAnyone who has any of the above and wants to share with me, I wouldn’t turn it down.
Awesome! I have a full-time job that I’d love to share with someone! When can you start? 🙂
I’m in the same boat as most of you. Had a few ideas, executed one of them somewhat poorly, now outta time.

ParticipantThat was pretty much the long and the short of it.
(groan)
I didn’t even catch that until caradoc‘s groan, but now that I have, I have to echo it – groan. 🙂
d’oh! I forgot to mention what my Evil Photography Twin gave me–a Kodak Duaflex I (which is hoodless for great TtV justice), and a Canon 24-105mm L….coffee mug 😉
How is that mug? I’ve been thinking that’d be a pretty neat coffee mug since I first saw them, but I wondered if they look as neat IRL as on the website.
…buncha Steeler’s crap…
Steelers fan, huh? And here I thought we coulda been friends… j/k, I can tolerate Steeler’s fans. Now Eagles fans, well, that’s more along the lines of irreconcilable differences.
The fisheye looks like it could be a lotta fun. I look forward to seeing what you do with it.
Big score for me: Kat got me a strobe + stand AND a remote trigger. Sweet! 😀 Oh, and I got Kat a ring-light for her macro lens. I may have to borrow it
Man, I didn’t even consider that advantage of having a photographer spouse. No, honey, really, I bought that for you! 🙂
As for me, I got a Cokin GND filter kit and a Spyder3 monitor calibrator.

ParticipantBecauseISaidSo, I absolutely love your blue and white entry. Every time I go through the thread, I pause at yours.
Thanks very much, mopsy. That’s from my last ski trip 6 years ago. We finally managed to work another trip in this spring break, so I hope to get some better shots with my dSLR this time. I also hope my knees hold out since they’re 6 years older now and aging at a seemingly exponential rate. 🙂
Your top shot, along with Kestrana‘s, was one of two that you could’ve told me was a scanned Christmas card and I would’ve believed it. Very nice.
And finally, congrats on the win, Kestrana!

ParticipantNice! I recognized the source of the title before reading the intro (one of my favorite albums). I especially liked the snow-covered Battery Park.
