i bought my step daughter a used film camera (digital wasn’t around much in ’96) and after two photo excursions it sat in her closet.

Similar story – I gave the Nikkormat (the camera that first got me interested in photography as a hobby) that my parents bought for me when I was 16 to my daughter. She bought a 3-pack of film for it, used part of one roll (which I don’t think ever got developed) and ended up giving the other two to one of her friends who’s into it. 🙁

Cool! I’ve tried to get my kids interested in it but so far haven’t had much luck. My oldest takes some photos now and then but I wouldn’t say he’s necessarily interested in photography.

BLM is the Bureau of Land Management, the federal agency in charge of much (all?) of the public’s land. And I’m actually kinda happy that they make it difficult to get to some places. When the general population is allowed in, then you have to “sissify” everything so that there’s minimal risk of someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing getting hurt. For example, if you look at my photo of Toroweap at Grand Canyon from the Waterscapes contest, you’ll notice there are no rails or warning signs anywhere. It’s a completely different experience than the normal tourist sites on one of the rims. They don’t restrict access to Toroweap, but they purposely don’t maintain the road beyond minimum accessibility to discourage crowds.

Our wedding is next May but we were civilly married on Saturday because orionid is in the Navy and for many reasons it was beneficial not to wait that long. Due to my work and the kind of wedding we want to have it wasn’t possible to move up our wedding date.

Well then, I must’ve missed that. Heartfelt congratulations to you both!

    … talk about high expectations!!

Hah! I hadn’t thought of that, but you’re right – I wouldn’t want anything to do with that job! (Not implying anything bad about either Kestrana or orionid, just saying that they know their stuff and someone who doesn’t really know what they’re doing wouldn’t be able to snow them like he might others.)

… except for orionid, because he just got married …

I thought I heard him say it was coming up next May. Did you mean getting married/got engaged or has orionid been a busy busy boy? I can barely handle one (wife, that is), much less two!

Pretty cool picture indeed. Space probe photographs have come a long way (no pun intended) since the early days, haven’t they?

Congrats, Ranger Joe/cameraflage. Very cool shot. Kinda reminds me of The Wave, which is on my places-to-go short list.

As for me, I think I need to stop watching the contest so closely. I had no idea that I had a top ten in there and had I just checked in today and saw that one finished 9th, I’d be thrilled. Instead, seeing it hang out around #2 until the last day and then slide to 9th is a bit disappointing in a way. I know, I know, I’m sure you’re all crying buckets for me. 🙂

I can’t really argue with the voters, though – there’s not really a pic that beat me that I’d feel justified in saying shouldn’t. Lotsa nice photos from everyone this week.

beerspill still reports everything’s OK, so it may be related to what we’ve seen with our own sites (i.e., backbone-related).

I’m on GoDaddy, too, but I was having intermittent problems with several websites last night so I’m wondering if there wasn’t a bigger problem in the tubes somewhere.

Holy crap, two of my entries have disappeared! And of course they were the two with the most votes.

Elsinore, is there anyway of restoring them? They’re all showing up OK at the source.

Good grief, that’s horrible! (The camera, I mean, not your daughter’s speech!) That belongs in kashari’s thread of woe, Weep with me fellow Farktographers.

How do you like the 7D compared to the 40D? I’ve got a 30D and have been lusting after a 7D for quite a while now (or maybe even a 5D, but it doesn’t take EF-S lenses and I have an EF-S 10-22mm that I like).

And congrats to your daughter. My son did something similar where they put a storybook character on trial. I think he was the defending attorney, but I don’t remember the actual character they used.

Thanks, rav. I’m surprised I didn’t see a Meteor Crater from you – didn’t you visit there recently?

And that’s very true about the B’s. Especially since they’re already post-proc’d and resized. Just need the right contest to come along…

I had a really hard time choosing this week. Urban or natural? National park or amusement park? In all, I selected 25 shots that I liked and had a hard time narrowing it down to 3 A’s and 6 B’s.

In the end I went with all “natural” shots for my A’s and mostly urban shots for my B’s. Also, for those who’ve visited my site before and reported the problem with the popup window displaying in odd places, I think I’ve fixed that (at least on the farktography side of the site – the football side hasn’t been updated yet). As always, if you take the time to look at the B’s and think I shoulda gone with one of them instead, I’m always interested in hearing that.

After doing some more research, I found that the video form is H.264 MOV, so that should be YouTube-compatible already.

On the site where I learned that, I also found a link to this software: http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html
It’s freeware that will read the H.264 format and convert/compress to other formats but it doesn’t appear to have the editing abilities of WMM. I’ve never used it but it appears to be legit.

Finally (again), you may have to install Apple’s QuickTime (if you don’t already have it) in order for WMM to read your video files. If that fails and you want to use WMM, you could use the previous software to convert to another format and then edit that in WMM.
