ParticipantWOW. It displays here fine. But not on the Fark page.
Not anymore. I just saw it 10 minutes ago. You’re not insane.
/dunno.
It is back. For now.
It’s inconsistent, so it could be a problem with the website and not way your posting the URL.

ParticipantI am amazed why this picture won’t post. This is the response from the posting routine.
Throwing away unfetchable URL http://ponkey.com/pix/albums/userpics/normal_IMGP8754.JPG 404 Not Found
Anyone? I’ve checked permissions and they are set to 755.
My gawd I feel like a idiot. I’ve done this before.WOW. It displays here fine. But not on the Fark page.
Joe
I’m getting 404 (file not found) errors for both links above. The filename appears to have an extra “normal_” appended. If you try,
I think you get the photo you want.

Participant….. um, what’s standard procedure when one forgets to make one’s pictures voting enabled? >_>
You could re-post with voting enable and ask for the previous one to be removed.

ParticipantIf you’re reading this niagh, you didn’t enable voting on the orange fountain shot FYI…

ParticipantReminds me of a lychee http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lychee, but the shape is not quite right. Definitely does not look like a citrus.
I think you’re right! I checked other pics of Lychee plants and it’s looks similar to some of them. Now the problem is that I really, really like Lychee and want to go pick (and eat) them.

ParticipantOK, I can’t help pitching a question out this week too. I’m on the fence about two Koi shots, one of which is abstract and sloppy and another which is clean and high contrast.
I was also all set to post one spiky orange fruit but have a co-worker that likes a a different shot of the same plant.
Feedback is welcome, no need to censor.
I like the high contrast fish.
What is the fruit? Citrus is out for the difficulty.
Thanks for the feedback! I have no idea what the plant is but I seriously doubt it’s cittrus. The leaves are wrong for citrus, the plant is very small (like 3 feet tall with fruit that’s an inch in diameter), and I don’t know of any citrus with spikes like that… I probably should have opened one up to see what it looks like inside, but they are planted by a road in a public park so I didn’t think it was a good idea.

ParticipantA question of my own:
When I was in the Netherlands I came across a fountain that had the water coloured orange (presumably for Euro 08 ). I am unsure how to crop it to get the best effect. The photo was taken with the primary subject as the person standing next to the fountain (who doesn’t want to appear). I’m tempted to concentrate just on the orange jets, but the building in the background is pretty cool (though not orange).
maximum portion of photo without the person
possible crop 1
possible crop 2I shudder to think how much orange colouring was needed to get a colour that vibrant. 🙂
I like the building too, but I think the doorway distracts the focus from the pattern of the windows and the sprays of water. So, how about a top crop that’s just above the middle pane of the upper windows, cuts off the door, and a bottom crop that’s halfway down the front face of the circular wall of the fountain? The result would show the water sprays and four rows of windows on the building, with the top row of windows only showing the bottom half (with the shutters). Just a thought. 🙂

ParticipantBut what about a kid who IS a pumpkin?
Which one is the kid?
I think you should post that to the Wikipedia entry for “cute as a bug” cause that’s what it is, uh-huh…

ParticipantI have a couple of others I haven’t uploaded yet, but these are the most interesting I think
Pictures of photographic equipment are always fun, but the earbud is the bomb…

ParticipantThree different versions of the same picture.
Looking for input.
I like the first one best.
I like the first one best too, but I the less abstract ones might get more votes.

ParticipantWell folks, it seems my Fark-fu has been erratic at best. Since I actually have a number of different possibilities for this weeks theme, I thought I’d offer them up to the Fark masters for a critique. Be brutally honest.
Thx.
RedIf you want votes you probably should ignore my comments, since I have a poor track record picking my own pictures! But having said that, I think the orange in the pipe photo jumps off the screen nicely. My guess is that the kids/pumpkin pic would get votes even though the orange isn’t as dominant as the others you posted. I like the boat in the harbor personally (but I’m biased since my dad is a commercial fisherman) but I think it would have to be cropped to make the orange a bigger percentage of the image to grab voters. I really like the anemone but don’t think voters have a good record when it comes to sealife(?). And images of sunsets seem to do poorly in general, even though the colors are pretty nice.

ParticipantHere is the image I had made, but is quite out of theme, alas…
Wow, that’s a great twist on a still life. The way the texture of the orange skin channeled the flow of the glowing liquid creates a nice effect. It reminds me of those fluorescent comb jellyfish, like this. It’s not the best example of what I’m talking about, but I think you can see what I’m talking about.

ParticipantI’m torn between these 2
I like both photos, but FWIW I think the first one (the gorgeous flower) works better for this contest since the orange color is more dominant.

ParticipantRegarding Uranus‘s three images, I agree that the third one is tricky but I prefer the first over the second. Here why…
While there’s a lot of nice features in the photo, like the bikes, the saucer shape of the roof, the blue/purple light from the sign, the glowing interior of the terminal and the buildings in the background, I think the strongest element is the arching support beam. So if you consider which of the three allows you to display that arch the best it’s the first one. The reason I like the first over the second is that the side of the arch facing facing the camera is lit better in the first one. In the second picture, the arch is more backlit, which makes it harder to make it the dominant part of the image. It’s also competing with the blue-letters of the sign in the second one.
But I played with all three and cropped them to draw attention to the arch and they are look interesting that way. The crop I liked on the first one has the right edge place to cut out the vertical pole (which is a bit distracting), the left edge chosen to cut out the mailbox (or whatever that is) since the scale of that element is odd by comparison. You do loose the sense of the saucer shaped roof line, but I think highlighting the dramatic shape of the arch is worth the trade-off.
Just my opinion of course, I mean no offense by suggesting that interesting elements be cropped out.
PS – The light level inside the building can be effectively changes with “curves” too if that bothers you.
