ParticipantHere’s one I’ve decided not to post (I don’t think B&W shots will do all that well in this one) in case it helps get people to post despite their apprehensions.

It’s far from perfect, but I think the composition is dramatic and it wouldn’t fit any other theme. So even if it’s not good enough to really hang in a serious gallery, it qualifies as far as I’m concerned. I know you all have something stashed away someplace you can show off. 🙂

ParticipantI took the theme to mean “post images that are too weird, experimental or otherwise over the top to fit in other more grounded contests”. And given my affinity for whacked colors, distortions, mistakes, and general chaos I had way too many to choose from. I have no idea if anyone else will like them, but I’m having a VERY hard time getting the finalists down to 3 images. Don’t be afraid to let it all hang out on this one, I think that’s the point!

ParticipantSo I’m going to assume from this example that a composition where yellow is the focus but in the minority from an overall color frequency perspective is acceptable for this contest? I was being too restrictive in scanning my negatives then, as usual. 🙂 If that sort of image is OK, I might go back through them again.
Also, can I get clarification on images that yellow due to the combination of evening light and expired film? I have one roll that came out overly saturated with the colors skewed as well. There’s a sand cliff that’s normally sandy brown that scanned in pretty yellow. I can post an example if that’s confusing. 🙂

ParticipantThere are some windmills in San Francisco (which may surprise most of you) and they would probably make for some interesting shots. They are abandoned in various states of disrepair, situated in semi-wild fields and right on the Pacific coast. But I’m still using film and didn’t have time to get there for this contest. There’s still time for anyone using digital in the SF area who hadn’t thought of a windmill idea yet, They are on the western edge of Golden Gate Park FYI.

ParticipantThose photos are amazing. The saturation is so intense they look surreal, almost to the point of being artificial/animations. I love them!

Here’s the “4th entry” that got booted this week. I really couldn’t see posting 2 photos of men in dresses wrangling steers(!) and I liked the other one better.

ParticipantHere are the two I cut this week. I always wonder if I guessed wrong in choosing, but that decision making process is part of the fun I suppose. 🙂

ParticipantMy assumption was that any streetlights had to be cropped out. One of the photos I’m planning to submit included a streetlight as well as utility (power) poles. But I was able to crop it down to meet the contest criteria.
Also, my assumption was that combo poles, ones with power/cable and lights, were out even in they were not illuminated. That was a challenge in this area since in most cases here one pole does anything and everything. But searching is half the fun, eh? 🙂

ParticipantI agree with Mr.BobDobalita’s comment above. The twist to reading the thread of posted entries this time was trying to see if I could guess what the original was from the cropped photo. I especially liked the ones where I was pretty sure but my guess turned out to be wrong.

ParticipantOops! The answer I sought was in the FAQ. *sigh* Plus it caught up.

ParticipantQuick question about FSM… The data for this contest has been out of synch with the Fark thread all day. How often does it update? For instance, U-Man’s winning humpback has 37 votes on FSM but 39 on the Fark results page. It’s been like that since early this afteroon. I’m sure it will catch up, but I was just curious about the timing.

ParticipantLooking for patterns in results after the fact is always interesting… In this case all the entries with text, with the exception of Marley’s “Sunoco” photo, got 4 votes or less. It looks like people weren’t responding to things you had to read this time. I wouldn’t have predicted that, but the numbers speak for themselves. 🙂

ParticipantI decided to go with another waterfall photo instead of this one since the cropped image was just too pixelated when blown up like this. I was surprised to find that odd “Skull Island” illusion in the water since I never noticed it before I started exploring the image in detail.

ParticipantThis got the boot too. It’s too 8th grade in the end, no pun intended. 🙂

ParticipantHere’s one I cut from the final list. The cropped image is too random for me. I couldn’t find a section of flowers/plants that looked enough like a finished photo.
