ParticipantWhat criteria are you guys using for this contest? your highest vote getters? contest winners? favorite photos? or something you have not entered?
I am using my three favorite photos from the past year. Not all of them did particularly well. I may use one I never even entered in a contest, because I like it.
/just curious
I thought I had this one figured out, but this comment (and a couple others) lead me to believe that, once again, I’m missing something. 🙂 Nothing new there, but at least I’ve got a chance to clarify before posting this time.
I thought the restriction was that you could only submit images that were submitted to previous contests. But it sounds like people are considering photos intended for contests that weren’t used in the end. Can someone clarify for me?
Thanks!

ParticipantI just realized that this contest won’t require searching archives, taking new photos, scanning negatives (and cleaning up the dust/scratch marks), figuring out how to crop out the good bits, etc… since by definition that work has to have been done already. So it’s going to take a lot less time than a normal week to prepare. I might get some things I’ve been putting off done this weekend. 🙂

ParticipantNice job everybody!!
Killerclaw: I knew that creepy doll was going to show up. 😀
I like seeing that doll too. too bad some doofus had to smash it.
We are talking Baltimore here, so it’s not surprising really.
I lived and/or worked there for 14 years, I’m allowed to make snarky comments!

ParticipantI had non-flower plans and ideas, but nothing worked out well. So, yeah, I need a break from pouring over hundreds of shots of purple flowers…

ParticipantOK, well that saves me some time uploading them, woo! I’ll use them as is.
Thanks!

ParticipantNevermind… I cropped a couple them from the big JPEG’s and they look fine. So I’m going to get rid of the weird edges before I post. I have to stop doing my edits after 2:00am, since I wind up redoing the work anyway!

ParticipantUgh… I had “feather edges” on when I cropped my photos this morning (very, very early this morning). So there’s a bit of a border which I didn’t intend. Are these final images OK? Or do I need to crop off the couple pixels?
To be clear, I don’t want borders and didn’t intend to fade out the edge like that. But since I don’t have access to the hi-res originals right now I’d prefer not to edit them anymore. But I’ll do whatever I need to do to comply with the rules.

ParticipantI have a question about broken images… My hosting site, which has always been reliable in the past, isn’t serving the images I submitted to the contest. They have been deleted from the contest thread and there are placeholders in the “results” as well. If the hosting site recovers, I’m hoping this is temporary, will the entries come back? Or will I have to resubmit them?
Well, they’re undeleted, but it looks like the links might still be broken. But if they come back, it should show up. The posts are there either way now.
Thanks for the info, that’s never happened to me before (looking for wood to knock on). The hosting site recovered (no idea what happened) and the photos are back in the results page. Still not in the contest thread, but I suspect that takes some time so I will check later when I get home.
PS – I big thank you to everyone that submitted images this time. Since I suggested the theme I was obsessing about it being unpopular. But you all delivered, so I’m very happy. Woo!

Participantthis theme wasn’t the easiest for me to find things for. I’ve got plenty of shots where things get jumbled in the frame, or where elements lay over each other, but not so much tangled.
Thought about using this shot, for instance, but nothing is necessarily tangled. It’s just messy.
…image deleted…
Did find three that I think fit the theme, though.
It was harder than I expected too, mostly because I couldn’t find the negatives I wanted to use. I’m a packrat unfortunately. *sigh* I also found one photo which I liked cause it was a stretch of the theme. But when I showed it to people I ended up getting an angry e-mail from someone that was offended by it! I don’t think I’m going to enter that one…
I think the photo you posted is beautiful, maybe a “silhouette” theme would be a good idea? The flatten color palette and hazy background suggest outlines of things to me.

ParticipantThe process I follow for these contests is to come up with a smallish number of “finalists” which I upload to my content hosting site, then I solicit feedback from photography minded friends at work to see which they like best. I started doing that since I always have trouble picking three after getting ~8-12 cropped, resized, scanner dust cleaned, etc… This time one of my favorites didn’t make the cut, but I wanted to share it anyway. So if you’re interested, click here to see a couple of the windows D.H. Lawrence painted in the Mabel Dodge Luhan House in Taos, New Mexico. All the walls of one of the bathrooms are filled with pains of glass that he painted. It’s impressive anytime, but particularly stunning at night.

ParticipantI’ll gladly let Lady E play sheriff. If needed, I can be the deputy.
You’re just trying to avoid being shot by Bob Marley.
I am all sick and tired and cranky this morning but that made me smile.
I’ll probably have that song in my head all day.
Dammit. Now I’m going to be shot through the heart, and you’re to blame.
/ok, that song isn’t nearly as cool as “I Shot the Sheriff”
//not sure how she feels about being a “sheriff”I’m not sure it’s the bullet you need to worry about, it’s the low spark of high-heeled boys that will lay you to rest.
/Trying to give you a range of choices for “stuck in your head” songs

ParticipantSo I stayed up way late into the morning taking photos, uploading from my camera, selecting finalists, cropping/resizing, etc… then juggled meetings today to upload the images to my hosting site, solicit feedback from my supporters at work, and just barely got everything ready to post by 5:40pm PT, yay!
Then I realized today is Tuesday and well, hmmm…

Participantsorry about jumping the gun in the contest Elsinore!

ParticipantI had a hard time choosing this week and picked three fairly abstract ones (compared to other choices). But I did want to post this for people to see anyway. Three is an awfully small number some weeks. 🙂
