Here’s another one from the batch of shots I took today. I like it, but I think it’s too abstract and creepy looking to submit for the contest.

One of the challenges for me this week is to decide what level of detail to include in the images to balance the “in focus” subject matter and the “bokeh” elements of the photo. Here’s a couple different crops of the same image with the original full image first to explain what I’m talking about. It’s interesting that the post-capture work makes such a difference this time.

My kabobs saved me from a shitty week

And I would have been better off sticking my lens into that bowl of cereal.

Trying to set up a shot is new territory for me, I’m a shoot the world as it presents it’s self kinda guy.

This week was all kinds of new for me too. I’m still figuring out my camera, the lens, got a tripod (which I’ve never used before), and played with multiple light sources. That plus buying the produce and assembling the food meant that by the time I was done shooting, the idea of eating food was revolting. 🙂 The next day I was back to normal and had a delicious breakfast. But I swear taking 100+ photos of a meal you staged would be an effective diet.

Even going through the images to find the ones I wanted to use killed me appetite!

But yeah, I had fun and learned a few things in the process. So I’m really glad we did this theme.

I wasn’t sure of my first entry was over the line or not so I’ll understand if it gets deleted. A big percentage of it was eaten at the dinner, but it’s definitely on the odd side…

Curious, I really like your first shot (and comment about museum storage). It struck me as very clever and made me smile, even though I’m still at work.

Since parts of the image field in my shots this week were in low light, I ran into a recurring problems that continues to nag me. The monitor I work on at home has much better contrast depth then some. It’s not crazy good, since I’m a cheap SOB when it comes to buying things most of the time, but the variability makes a huge difference.

I try to check images after making the brightness, contrast and color level adjustments on an alternate monitor and laptop before posting. But that’s not always possible and it still means I find out that something I like is too muddy very late in the process. That’s the frustrating part.

I’ll probably just learn to compensate after doing this enough times. But I’m still curious to hear whether or not other people have the same problem and what, if anything, they do to work around it.

For what it’s worth, here a couple of images from the shots I took yesterday which looked good to me on my primary system, but which look very muddy (and unusable) on my laptop at work.

What I learned this week, which due to procrastination means from 10:30pm last night to 4:00am this morning, is that I really, really need a tripod. 🙂

I know the tree images were supposed to speak for themselves, without a caption, but it’s quite hard to translate what these trees mean to people just by looking at them…Anyone care to share a story ?….Is this even legal while the event is still in progress ?…..Mine’s kinda’ interesting….I can wait.

I?m a newbie to Farktography, so forgive me if I step in it.

There is a bit of a story with one of the photos I submitted. I’ve always referred to it as “Ghost of Katrina”. Along the Mississippi Gulf Coast many of our ancient oaks did not survive the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. One in particular is close to the office where I work. I happened to catch sight of it on a very foggy morning earlier this year. I thought it would make a striking photograph and someone should capture the moment. I did and it did. Not long after I took the shot, it was bulldozed to make way for rebuilding.

I’ll try to stay within the spirit of the rules, so I won’t tell specifically which picture it is. But, I’m sure you can figure it out.

I’m glad you explained the backstory of that shot. It matches perfectly with the vibe I got when I saw it. The number of votes seems to indicate that lots of people agree, so nice job!

I had a tough time picking the photos to submit this week for a variety of reasons. The folks I bounce idea off didn’t get back to me in time, the images I really liked at home looked too dark/muddy on other monitors, and I just kept changing my mind over and over. When I did hear back from the people that preview finalists for me, some of they suggested images I’d talked myself out of submitting, yay!

So in the interest of getting better at this, I’m posting my tree preview list here and would welcome any constructive criticism. No need to be nice or otherwise hold back if you have strong opinions. 🙂 I have a thick skin, won’t take it personally, and am doing this to learn. Also if you want to contact me directly, you can e-mail me at lemat@nihilon.com instead of posting here.

Just as a reminder, since you’re probably going to get a lot of guff from all the pulling:
We (we cool people, at least) appreciate what you do for the threads.

Yup yup yup, what the stapler guy said…

Elsinore, I think you’re going to get a workout ensuring entries follow the theme this week based on the early submissions!

BTW, I’m really enjoying the horse-race for top honors this week. I’ve been checking from time to time and ultraholland, U-Man, and SilverStag have been within 1-2 votes of each other each time. It pretty clear those three are the voter favorites, but the order keeps flipping around.

Yeah, I don’t want to derail this thread, but thank you 🙂 Btw, that tree shot of yours this week is very nice. Did you shoot that with a Holga?

There are some seriously, ridiculously awesome shots all around this week…

Close! It was shot with a Lomo, B&W film, in the early evning in drizzling rain. So pretty much a recipe for something dark and weird. 🙂 Some people like the way Lomo’s mess with color film, but I pretty much only use mine for black and white.

meh, with Dad passing, I knew I wasn’t going to go shooting for this week, and I knew the one shot in my archives that I figured I’d use wasn’t the greatest. It was mostly to say I participated. I loved seeing what everyone else came up with, though. This was a good theme; might have to repeat it at some point…

This is a little off topic, so I’ll keep it brief and will relocate the another thread if you prefer…

The note you posted about your father, and the photo, was an extraordinary celebration of his charm and I found it very moving. I just wanted to let you know I thought it was wonderful, even if it did make me all bleary eyed and weepy at work!

OK, me too! The list of finalist I chose from is here. It shows the versions of the images before I cleaned up scanner dust/scratches but I’d already cropped them at least.
