ParticipantElsinore I forgot to enable voting on my third entry this week (brain wasn’t working). Can you fix it for me? The timestamp is 2008-10-29 08:16:43 PM in case is make it easier to fine.
Thanks!

ParticipantI had two images I really liked that didn’t make the cut this week, so I thought I’d at least post them here. The first one is a different view/angle of some sort of banded lizard I ran across in Joshua Tree park. The black and white coloring on it’s neck looks like a tuxedo or a priest’s collar to me. The second one is an albino alligator in the San Francisco Science Center.

ParticipantI’d like to solicit feedback on a photo that made my finalists list this week. Is this,
“middle of the night” enough for this contest? It was dark outt, but not too long after sunset.
I’m fine not using it, but I do like it so I thought I’d get a ruling before the contest goes live.
That would work for me as far as the contest goes.
Here is an image that I took from 10:00PM to 10:30PM, and most of it looks like it is daytime. For some reason I think I have better than that, so I probably am not going to be entering that. Thanks for the feedback (that goes for soosh and NoBigDeal too), I’ll consider it fair game for the contest. But I have two co-workers that vote on finalists each week and neither chose that shot so I’ll probably save it for another theme.
And I really like the star trail shot precisely because it looks like daylight but the trails clearly show it’s taken at night. But I have a bias and tend to like interesting long exposure shots a lot. I have no idea what voters like. That’s why I solicit feedback from friends at work each week before posting! The ones I love are generally not crowd favorites.

ParticipantJust curious, what , if anything do you guys use to convert your slides to digital format? I was quoted around $500 for a nikon machine that will do that today, and thought it was a little steep. I had been paying Ritz to do it, but at $.75/slide plus a disk fee, it is getting kind of expensive.
Many of the flatbed scanners (mostly USB connections so they are easy to use) come with slide and negative holders so you can scan slides as well as paper. So they have two light sources, one on the bottom for scanning reflectively and one on the top for illuminating “scan through” media. I picked up a Canon model for about $120 which is pretty decent. The software is a little clunky but I’m happy with the results.

ParticipantAgree… Mardi Gras counts
thanks for the feedback but i ended up with too many as it was after all. the picture i had in mind was this one

catching the cup in mid air was luck.
I really like that shot. It gives the illusion that that cup is much larger than it really is.

ParticipantTough theme this time. I have one shot and was going to head to the fairgrounds today and try for a couple more, but I got laid off this morning so now I’m going to drink and maybe submit the one I have if I can still work the keys by then.
Sorry to hear about the job, I suspect many other people are worried about the getting similar notices these days.
If it would help work out your frustrations you could take a photo of your termination notice after you scrawled “Not Fair” with a sharpee?

ParticipantI’m out for this one since I don’t have anything that fits the theme. But I’ll be online Wednesday night to support everyone else’s efforts by voting. See you next week.

ParticipantThe lighting is different, so my guess is that it’s two shots of the same setup. If I went to the trouble of arranging all those damned keys you can bet there would be many. many shots in the DSLR before I tore it down!

ParticipantTime is not my friend this week… I’m a lifelong pack rat, so there’s lots of options in the house. But real life is not cooperating.

ParticipantThanks for the comment about the cross. I photographed it on two different nights for this theme. It’s a great subject. I just couldn’t seem to make it work like I wanted. Y’know?
I love the Epcot photo it’s so geometric but randomized at the same time.
Also, the Jesus-Saves cross bling is very nice too. I’ve spent enough time in Dallas to know things like that are just part of normal life for many people. Seeing it framed like that drives home how odd that really is.
PS – Thanks for the kinds works Elsinore and mopsy.

ParticipantI was in the middle of posting this image when I belated noticed the “no casinos” difficulty. D’oh!
I caught it before I hit the submit button, so I don’t need a moderator clean-up. But do like the crop so I thought I’d at least post it here.

ParticipantAll I have for this contest is a bunch of “meh”:
http://flickr.com/photos/33021410@N00/tags/neon/Unless this deer with an off camera flash is in theme, but I don’t really think so.
Looking forward to U-Man’s kid holding a neon sign.
And Soosh with a neon sign in the store window of a snow covered shop.I really like the mannequin in the window with the OPEN sign, for what that’s worth…

ParticipantIt is one of the hardest things to do, taking photos of strangers. My series of bus photos was basically a way of forcing myself to become comfortable with that kind of shooting, and it worked well. Like anything else, the more you do it, the more comfortable it feels.
The bull-riding shots are great. I think a monopod might be a lot more useful in that sort of situation than a tripod.
I can get a bit, um… indulgent, if I’m not careful so I’ve been trying to limit the amount of gear I purchase to support my renewed interest in photography. So far that’s worked. But for a variety of reasons I think I see a monopod in my near future. Lots of people have recommended them and I don’t deny myself toys well, especially when they seem so practical.

ParticipantHonestly, I can’t believe how well my “Gatorade bottles on a grocery store shelf” entry is doing.
I voted for it… The shot is nice and the comments at the bottom area great too.
I also liked the “My milkweed brings the bugs to the pod.” bit from Snug Tight. Very, very clever even if it did cause me to get that damned song stuck in my head.
