Participantdamn, I forgot all about my totem photos.
…image deleted…
I really like that one!

ParticipantI had plans to take photos for this one, but time worked against me and it was a rummage through the archives instead. Oh well, those piles of California buckeyes (they look like shiny brown, very hard, plums) can go back outside…
Anyway, here’s a couple that I like but didn’t select. More fodder for the upcoming B-Sides contest!

ParticipantI’m afraid I’m out for this one. I am looking forward to seeing what you all come up with, perhaps even more than normal because I’ve got nothing. But figuring out how to make a pinhole camera out of the equipment I have is beyond my ability (meaning available time plus mental capacity) this week. I’ll still participate in the voting though, so best of luck to you all.

Participantlol in the morning I have to get up and make mashed potatoes to take to Mom’s. This was not good timing on my Doctor’s part 😛
Better a faux-flu then the real thing I guess? I hope you feel better in time for dinner!

ParticipantI like that second one a lot.
Thanks! I like it too, especially since I know where I took the shot. What’s NOT in the picture is a big part of why I like it, which is why picking things to enter gets complicated for me. I have all this context that gets in the way of judging a images on their on merits.
For instance, that shot is taken at a random wetlands park, or preservation area, that’s in Palo Alto California. About 150 yards behind the where I setup is highway 101. So the peacefulnes, view across the bay, and lights from the east bay cities gives a false impression that it’s in some remote area. But you can’t get any of that from the picture itself.
Even so, it’s on top of my list for the “B Sides” contest coming up.

ParticipantHere’s a couple that didn’t make the cut this week.

ParticipantThe background stories are a huge part of the appeal for many of the images this week. I just snorted out loud reading the 2008-11-19 09:08:07 PM entry from lady_nocturne. There’s lots of others where the explanation adds to the image too, that’s just the latest example. I’m really enjoying reviewing the queue as it builds.
I’ll pass your comments along if you like – I’m sure she’d appreciate it 😉
/she just kat and I have been running around Sacramento like crazy people with cameras lately. Please do let her know her story made my day, it really brought an otherwise confusing picture into focus (yes I pun’d, sorry!).
And having recently driven from SF to LA via highway 99 I know how flat, empty and HUGE the central valley is. So I appreciate the idea behind just kat‘s dirty windshield photo too.

ParticipantFinding photos for this week’s contest was very entertaining and raised a couple of questions I hadn’t expected. First of all I quickly decided to make this a rummage through archives, since going out to intentionally take inept photos didn’t makes sense in my case. I can see how trying out new ideas, new equipment, new settings, etc… without thinking them through could work. But I have enough awful results from years of learning through mistakes that I could just edit from countless choices.
Even then, deciding what makes a “good” bad photo was a challenge. There are so many ways an image can go wrong from bad composition, bad lighting/setting, accidents at just the wrong moment, bad choices for settings/lens, equipment/film malfunctions, etc… I wasn’t sure which route to take so I threw up (pun?) a wide range of miserable photos in a gallery and asked friends to laugh and point. Those replies have been lots of fun, so this contest is already a big win for me.
Have a look at 59 shades of fail if you need a chuckle and post your own “almost but not quite bad enough” selections here if you had too many to pick from too.

ParticipantBTW, U-Man your pig was submitted as a “O” for a Photoshop contest already! It was greenlit for 11/9 at 5:19pm too. So you aren’t going to be the only one putting lipstick on that hog. Yeehaw!

ParticipantAny thoughts on mine?
I like both shots, but I’m a sucker for B&W and weird lighting… The first one seems more aligned with the farm theme to me. So I’d pick that one unless you want to post both. I don’t get much of a “farm” vibe off the second one though since I don’t think of farms as having their own train tracks.

ParticipantAnyone want to critique a couple possible entries?
Also, are these two different enough to be two separate entries, or do I need to pick one or the other?
I’m planning to post a wind farm entry too, but a different place and a different perspective.
For what it’s worth, I like the movement of the first one, even though I agree with corsec67 about the sky/ground composition strength of the second one. But the movement bonus outweighs the composition strength IMO.
