Hmmm… And now the FSM dropped the image in question from my results. How strange!

Elsinore, my image hosting site apparently had a temporary problem and one of my images in the contest is got flagged as deleted/broken. It looks OK on the image site now, so can I get a reset? The timestamp is 2008-08-27 08:21:17 PM in case that helps.

    Thanks!

In northern California one of the impressive, but fairly common, sights is a bank of clouds spilling over a line of mountain peaks. And I thought people would post some of them for this contest, since they lend themselves to a long thin crop. But so far I don’t see one, so I thought I’d at least post the one I cropped out of a shot here for those of you that don’t get to see things like these clouds in your area.

Maybe it’s a west coast thing? I don’t know… But I know when I lived in the Washington DC area I never saw clouds at ground level unless it was impenetrable fog.

I suppose I’m weird, but I like stitched images where the rectangles don’t merge perfectly. In other words, if it’s perfect and could just be a crop from a bigger picture that’s not as interesting to me. But I have a high tolerance for chaos and like abstract art too. So your mileage may vary…

the people really add the perspective to that photo.

You mean the little ant-like specs? 🙂 I found a lot of things in Yosemite warp your sense of personal scale and it was really hard to get pictures that capture it felt when I was there.

I thought that waterfall looked familiar, but wasn’t sure until I found this picture from a Yosemite trip a few years ago!

Mine’s from a completely different angle and different time of the year so it doesn’t work as well as RcMacStudent‘s as a panorama. But that striped rock is really unique and it triggered a happy memory.

BTW, I like the skinnier crops people suggested.

I just re-read this thread and think I can find a couple more shots to include by cropping some photos. But I’m not 100% certain what the criteria are for that. I seems, from previous comments, that the width to height ratio is the key, but I’m not sure what value is the cutoff point. So before I edit things and get all attached to the crop I used(!) I thought I’d ask. Does it have to be 2:1, 3:1, something in between, or something even bigger?

Figuring out how to post something that’s 640 pixels wide is going to tricky this week. The entry I stitched together is 10055 x 1086 so it doesn’t shrink so well. Since my gut feeling is that people vote based on the posted image and don’t often click through if you do link to a bigger version, I think it’s going to be a challenge.

But I did (finally) learn the basics of how to use layers in Gimp in the process. So no matter what the outcome, I’ve already gotten a lot out of this one.

Not to be a dick, but isn’t this a shadow?

Part of it is, part of it isn’t, and the definition of “silhouette” that someone posted a page or two back included screened silhouettes like that, so I think it’s legal.

I think that someone was me in response to the bug/leaf photo. Sorry if it introduced a loophole the contributors would have preferred not be there.

Maybe I will finally get a 2nd place finish with this theme. Soosh’s entry is just awesome.

(2nd and 9th place are all I need to have entries that finished in places 1-27.)

That’s impressive! I’d need a few more than that, like 1-6, 14, 18-20, 22-24, 26. and maybe a few more (FSM isn’t loading at the moment).

Also I’m glad to see soosh submitted the palm tree pic. That’s what started this whole theme in the first place, woo!

I had some difficulty choosing as well. Here’s some I was considering.

All of them have a strong immediate impact IMO so I could see any of them in this contest. But since I have an unnatural attraction to lens flare and other light distortions, I especially like the first one. Also mood in a low light photo can be really potent and your moonlit tree conveys that quiet power well.

I like the floral eclipse, too. But there is something about it that bugs me that I can’t put my finger on. Perhaps it is the very narrow depth of field and I would like another part of the flower in focus. Was there a breeze that caused motion blur? Something about the sharpness.

    It’s a cool photo nonetheless.

It was windy, and it’s hand-held with a slow telephoto lens, so lots of movement and chaos crept into it. There are a couple more of the same flowerhead and this one has more of the flower and a bit more is in focus.

I had a hard time picking three this week so I’m posting couple more here for your enjoyment and/or feedback.

    Wall of grass

    Floral eclipse of the sun

    Twin Peaks tower

    Barbed-wire and bokeh

I obviously liked the contest, a lot. I spend too much time taking pictures of the sun I guess, which might explain a few things. 🙂

Quick reply here since I’m in a meeting (ugh). On the photographer/model shot I think it’s borderline as well, primarily since the part of the image with the model is so strong. So if I got a bunch of votes, which I expect it would, I wouldn’t be confident that people voted because they liked the silhouette part or because they were entranced by the model. So I wouldn’t submit it personally if I had another option. But since there’s a few people that are equally undecided, I’m OK with letting it go.

Hmmm, how to post HTML for click/pop submissions in a BBS that interprets HTML? That’s a challenge I have to try, heh!

Here’s two suggestions. The first will let people click on the image you post to get a bigger one in a new window/tab.

Click image to open bigger version in new window.

The second will make the word “bigger version” clickable to pop a new window/tab.

Click for bigger version in a new window.

Where you replace the things in quotes after src= and href= with the URL’s for the normal size and the bigger size for your image host. The target=”_blank” gizmo is what makes the links pop to a new window/tab.
