lokisbong your sensor is 5.744 x 4.308 mm. there are 25.4mm to an inch so using either an inch or metric ruler take a picture of it. if you get 5.744mm in your full frame shot you are at 1:1 or true marco. you won’t get that most likely but lets say you get 11.4mm then you are 1:2 or 1/2 life size.

this site explains macro using the diagonal but frankly a simple right to left should work too. it was at their review site i got your sensor sizes.

Yeah I used the 12 mm extension tube on my milk drops and on the recent pictures I took at the United States National Botanical Garden in D.C. It’s a lot easier to mount that on the 18-105 than to try and use the MF 200mm without a tripod.

i used my 20mm ext tube on my 18-105 with the lens set at 70mm for my shots this week. that didn’t produce 1:1 macro but it sure got me closer than i’d have been otherwise.

I have no idea if my 55-200 lens is “macro” but it gives me killer (comparatively) close-up shots. I’m still wanting a longer lens for better telephoto/zoom in capacity. I’ll have to look into extension tubes. I have one for my film SLR, and enjoyed it way back when.

chances are it’s 1/2 half life size at best, not 1:1. however if it will focus at less than three feet at 200mm, yeah you can get some nice close-ups.

I’m scrambling and archive-diving trying to find some macro shots. Sad I never got the macro lens to go with my DSLR, heh.

take a look at some extension tubes instead. $179 for a kenco set with canon mount and there are links to nikon mount on that page also.

a bunch of folks will jump in here and recommend dedicated macro lenses but for my money i’d rather do ext tubes.

i have another idea but 1) i’m not sure just what i need to pull it off, 2) not sure what to shoot if i can get the setup right.

I searched flickr for “barren macro” in hopes of inspiration. Fail. Thousands of shots that were neither barren nor macro and two ice-covered dead-tree landscapes.

/Still got nuthin with a few mediocre ideas. May run with the light bulb filament if that’s not going to step on anyone’s toes.

i have a couple of variations on this but you are welcome to join in and make it a mini theme. i have a couple of 1911 shots too. 🙂

    ennuipoet that was beautiful.

i have a 15′ remote cable release for the minolta 7i and an IR remote release for the nikon D3000. the IR release will fire the camera when pointed at the ceiling or a side wall.

I regret all those years I wasted not pursuing something I am passionate about. I love how digital gave me back a window the world. Still, I can’t help but believe that photography as an “Art” would be better without it.

Or, I should tie an onion on my belt and start shouting at clouds.

remember Instamatics? hell even the lovely brownie hawkeye. when enough folks got the shutter bug fever then the camera makers had some money for R&D on better stuff. and people ask for better stuff.

same thing is happening with digital. 14MP P&S didn’t just come about because the camera companies were bored. but the upside is that technology is in mid and high end DSLRs now too.

like i need to tell you this.

bob ross’s happy little trees aren’t art (except in the looses sense) but they made folks think about technique and oil vs watercolor and IMO made folks appreciate good art. ok not all folks, see kinkade.

besides “art” is only one measure of photography’s usefulness.

the way i read these article the camera is geared at P&S consumers, orionid. now two levels of cameras and software would make sense much like we have pro versions now.

when i got the 4×5 i traded a guy for this tripod he wanted light weight and i wanted heavy duty. straight trade and we were both happy. have it to this day.

i also have a couple of light weight like this one on the right. that’s the heavy duty in the foreground. and a 24″ Slik and a few of the mini type, two flimsy 36-40″ and a monopod. because you just can’t have enough [strike]useless crap[/strike] tripods.

instead of ex-girlfriend she would be refereed to as “the defendant”. there is no excuse for that level of damage. and to his working tools? oh hell no. the suit would be for replacement glass and all income lost.
