yeah i just got an email back from Drew.

so do you want to thumb wrestle over who gets credit?

no that’s not right. it doesn’t matter who got it fixed just that it did. thanks for sending the farkback.

thanks veruca i probably should have done that originally but didn’t think of it. and i’ve been away from the computer/fark/farktography for the last two hours.

i did send Drew the agreed on reminder email and the link ID after submitting the contest and posting the boobies. BUT by the time i’d done that it was already green and at 5:26 AM. i’m thinking he did some auto thing keyed to the contest name or something but forgot our time request.

goes to the main page at 5:26 AM EST. not exactly what i’d hoped for but they both ran so i’m happy. and there are good entries in both.

sorry to hear that 3Horn it truly does suck to lose images. especially ones you can’t replace.

at least when one had the lab screw up your film it was only 24 or 36 frames.

all told i have a total of 12 compact flash cards and 6 or 7 xD cards. all name brand and no problems so far. usually download from a reader but have done the camera thing too.

well that won’t work. both my 2 1/4’s actually take decent pictures. and adding a plastic lens to screw the shots up just isn’t my cup of tea. maybe i’ll try the plugin on an existing 2 1/4 neg. got a few of them.

ask this in another thread but …. i own two twin lens reflex 2 1/4 cameras, are either, both acceptable? there are not holga. or for that matter any old shots scanned for this contest? and besides the format is there a theme subject?

well i’ve done mine for both contests. the PS one needs work and may be redone but at least there is one to post. and the farktography one has been shot. rather a series of shots, got to pick the one i like best, save for web and upload but they’re much closer than this morning.

and overall i’m happy with them.

if your camera has the depth of field preview button then you’re golden. for one thing you can simply look through the viewfinder while trying the different settings. with a SLR, or in this case a DSLR, what you see is what you get. at least as far as depth of field goes. you may only be seeing 90 – 95% of what will be in the final picture but that’s for another time.

and i’m assuming there is an info display that shows the increasing shutter open time as the aperture closes down. great DOF isn’t much good at 1/15. unless you have Diggin’s tripod. note his shutter at 1/8. it will be a long time before you can hand hold at that speed.

since you are shooting digital and the only cost is in your time try this. take a 3/4 inch or 1 inch tape measure and extend it out a few feet on a table top or something similar. then put a small item at 2 or 3 feet as a focus and reference point. then take the several sots you mentioned above using the full range of f stops. that should graphically show you how f stop affects DOF since you can see the numbers blur both front and back. you will notice that the front DOF is smaller than the rear DOF. no, i don’t know why. it just is.

that said there are two other things to keep in mind. the longer the lens the shallower the DOF all things being equal. and the closer you are the shallower the DOF. i’d bet there are tables for different lens and distances if one was to google. film lens used to have a scale for DOF but my digital don’t.

good luck. and take lots of shots. even ones that don’t strike you at first can often be saved with a judicious crop job.

Bill the Cat had an idea that might be worth pursuing. those that participate in both venues shoot a photo for a particular farktography contest. they then use PS to enhance, mangle, whatever the image as an “O” in a themed PS contest. the theme being PS your photo from farktography. it wouldn’t matter to the farktography contest except that it should spur some PS folks to enter. it would reduce the entries to the photoshop part since only those that submitted to farktography would have “o”‘s. but there have been low turn out PS contest before and they have enough contests that one low count contest would go unnoticed.

we could also promote the PS contest in the boobies for the farktography contest. might make some folks enter both since they would be working with their own stuff.

sofashark suggested this: You could do a theme on paired opposites. The Farktographers do a “Black” theme, then hand it over to the PSers to pick up the “White” half, as long as they use an element of at least one photograph that was entered.

the following discussion produced this in my part: farktography recently had a theme of “your style” or words to that effect. a variation might be shot in so and so’s style (giving credit to who you are emulating) and the PS crowd could then enhance the photo to make it match a painter. ansel adams meets georgia o’keefe.

Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico with “White” blended in.

before i belabor the obvious .. went back and read all the posts in the topics at photoshopgraphy and it looks like you’ve been down this road more than once. it seems there are two main problems. the drew part and the lack of promotion on our part. i’m in the PSAEF all the time and can nag them once we decide what it is we’re trying to do.

i’d like to push the band literal one for right now. it works for both places and is far enough out that we could promote it some. there are those here that have much more pull with drew than i do and i would suggest preping him ASAP. a “hey we’de like to” thing to start and some follow-up when the PS thread is posted. it would be really sweet if the two could go green at close to the same time.
