ParticipantEven though I think I have a very different view of the ACLU from Orionid I have to agree with him that avoiding political type groups would probably be a good idea with how many people are involved with this.
folks the ACLU is non political. not that one would know that from the general preconception of them. but if including them causes problems then … well i too don’t want to start a ruckus and this isn’t the time or place to get sidetracked. besides if we stick to those charities that are photo related we increase the potential goodwill.

ParticipantInternational League of Conservation Photographers — i’m big on conservation and give to the nature conservancy when i can.
ACLU – while i’m not a fan of some of their positions what SilverStag said is unfortunately all too true.

Participanthaving look at the contest to date it’s as great as i’d hoped.
and the money saying “derp” cracked me up. when i vote friday morning it will test the endurance of my clicking. unlike the last time we did this i found that immediate answers to the photos actually made me enjoy them more. so another “well done”.

Participantdid not include the lion exhibit for my chance at ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’
best flash animation of that song you will ever see.

Participanthave my three and am just waiting to post them. for the first time in a while i’m excited about a contest. other weeks i may like my entries but these are special.
btw i tried curves on an image but couldn’t get the results i liked and used another one that just need a slight crop.

Participantisn’t there something that neutralizes it/them? or maybe my fuzzy memory is about another chemical.
I believe you have your metaphors mixed up and are thinking about ‘synthohol’, from Star Trek, in which you never get drunk. 😆
from what i remember of my drinking days that sounds rather pointless.

Participantoh just FWIW the EPA has a “one drop” rule that basically means if you put something nasty in a drum of something ok the drum then becomes nasty. it’s not quite that bad but it’s close.
used to do EPA and DEQ compliance at my last job.

Participanti’ll probably go with “hint in file name” because IMO if you can’t convey the song .. well that’s what the contest is about after all. god alone knows what will resonate with the voters. OTOH a snippet of lyrics might be in order. two of mine should be recognizable to older voters and the last will be one of those “Oh yeah” things. again to older voters.

ParticipantElsinore i need to get the new rules printed and scotch taped to my monitor since i seem to forget them 🙂
i guess that at the end of the day i can go along with adjusting/tweaking beyond what i consider fair because the great god ansel did it and the results speak for themselves. but what i’d really like is contests that are judged on a person’s creative and composition skills. not their skill with photoshop or other tools. ennuipoet said: “I personally feel that judicious use of software enhancement is exactly the same as judicious use of advanced darkroom techniques.” now i agree with that but my point is that the vast majority of our entrants don’t have advanced darkroom technique skills. or their digital equivalents.
olavf‘s winning entry last week may or may not have been tweaked but even straight from the camera if had good visual impact. nice composition, lighting — well you all know what constitutes a good photo. that’s an example of what i would like to see.
i will now get off my soapbox, put away the cudgel and let this poor equine rest in peace.

ParticipantI think I prefer the contests to default to “simple” photography with global analog-equivalent PS or the like (aside from local dodge/burn in conjunction with analogs). It keeps the challenge level up to those with an eye for composition and scene and allows for some digital darkroom action.
i’m with except IIRC selective dodge/burn is a spot treatment and against the rules.

ParticipantI’ve seen a lot of Win! done with Leggos, and such things. You can always think small rather than big.
that’s my hope for entry two. shot it today and it’s better than ok but not wow.

Participantthis may be a good time to unlimber the rolleiflex. or the XD-11 with the 50mm but i never was to fond of that length.

Participantone odd thing is that as of this morning hovering over a jpeg image no longer brings up the little data box (the one with the image size, date taken, etc.) but hovering over a NEF image brings up a data box with much more info than the earlier one. it adds EXIF info. i’m not happy about losing the data box on jpeg images and rebooting didn’t fix it.
all that is edited from my original post for back ground on this info. the windows RAW viewer has an “option” button and by using that and changing the file associations (unclicked jpeg in RAW viewer) i now have BOTH data boxes again. hovering over a RAW or NEF produces the size in pixels, MB etc and also EXIF data. it calls on the RAW viewer to get that. hovering over a jpeg image produces the pixel size, MBs, date taken, etc calling on the picture and fax viewer to do so. the only downside i can see now is when advancing through my photos in a folder i will have to use two viewers to see both RAW/NEF and jpeg. OTOH the RAW/NEF was converted to jpeg so the images are duplications anyway. since i really missed the date taken part this is setup is a plus.

Participantsleeping‘s post on the 25th seems to confirm that. perhaps he will comment further.
