, it makes me want to snatch it and run, like people would a beaten puppy or an abused child.

I know this makes me sound like a pretentious a-hole, but wow, does it really chafe my britches.

love the analogy. i too hate to see tools misused but i’ve been broke so long and seen so many folks taking snapshots with rigs like that it no longer bothers me.

look at it this way. you get better results with less technological equipment. a clear demonstration of skill over throwing money at photography.

she was probably driving a lexus SUV too. some folks just buy the most expensive thing they can with the hope that it is somehow better or will give them a better result.

or they are showing off 🙂

the exposure balance is better in the last one but the first is more interesting. i had a similar problem the other day with alternating lighter darker stripes. set the exposure meter to center weighted and used the light areas for the exposure. did the shutter half way down thing and once i had the exposure captured changed the composition for what i wanted. it worked ok. using EV +/- settings might have given better results but for a quick fix it worked.

The only issue I have is that is I tend to switch the lenses frequently, I’m planning on buying a 18-200 lens when I can get the money together, just to avoid that problem.

i guess lens switching would depend on subject, composition wanted, etc but i find that the 55mm -300mm works well for me. OTOH there certainly are times the greater width provided by the 18-55 sure is nice.

for $800 bucks that looks like a good deal if one wants a single lens. the reviewers were mostly positive. i’m impressed at the small size. of course 35 years ago i bought a soligor 70-220 which was so big and weighted so much that it had a tripod mount on it. in those days besides an onion on your belt you had a pack mule to carry your stuff.

#2 is beautiful. the golden light is really nice. #1 is also really nice but the column does detract a bit. #3 for me would be good if one crops just the bottom half but the blown out area around the arch and especially the upper middle ……. but hey that scene is a bitch to meter. with our contest rules you couldn’t spot fix it and burning in the over exposed parts and still getting the light highlights right would be tricky.

on a semi related note how do you like the camera and lenses so far?

i just got a D3000 with the 18-55 and also bought a 55-300. haven’t tried it/them in low light yet but for normal stuff they’re fine. and the wireless remote is great.

I will always miss film partly because I never took the opportunity to play with it. It’s an art and a science, with no immediate feedback like one gets with digital. I’ll prolly never do film, but rather likely will appreciate seeing the work of those who know what they’re doing. It’s fun sh!t, and I’ve missed out. I find it hard to apply the term “Art” to digital photography, at least in my case.

the lack of immediate feedback does make you think about your shot more and it’s true that there is some science involved, especially if you are pushing or pulling the film. OTOH the preview screen doesn’t really do it in so far as seeing what the finished photo will be. and then there is post processing which for either media can add a lot of control to the finished image. besides there are lots of controls on even the lower end DSLRs for exposure compensation and other “tricks”. and if you want to concentrate on the image turn the auto stuff off and go full manual. it will focus you.

and, like porn, art is in the eye of the beholder.

I only have two pictures in this and I would say I am very happy to get that much. The people who have more pictures have taken very good pictures that deserve their places I think. I think you are doing a good job and don’t think it needs any change at all.

yeah a whole bunch of this. i haven’t been paying attention to the book project and was both surprised and pleased to get get an email asking me to send the form back.

about the friends thing — tough shit to those mentioning it. in my many years here and many contests entered i could 1) blame my poor showing on not being popular and the popular folks getting votes 2) suck it up and admit that all too often there were better photos than mine entered which, not surprisingly, got more votes. i choose the latter.

as far as what’s in the book from looking at the pdf i like it. would i have chosen each and every one? no but it’s a good representation of us. and i hadn’t looked at who had the most/least and won’t. it doesn’t matter. nor does it matter how they got there. i’m content that it was as fair as these things can be and even if it wasn’t so what. life’s not fair, deal with it.

and for tweaks maybe, but for god’s sake don’t start over.

now it’s afternoon and i did some shooting. and really like at least one of the 68 images i took. actually i like a couple but will have to see what else might happen before wednesday and what i find in the archives.

so were you wearing your safety goggles? i just simple hate it that everything, and i mean everything, now has that stupid safety goggles warning.

cool build. and i guess i don’t need to point out that your light leaks seem consistent in location. last time i had a leak like that it was a missing screw but here — not so much.

I also used Nashua nuclear-grade duct tape. the brand name i’ve heard of and used. is “nuclear grade” a real grade or just your opinion of it’s toughness.

selling the camera here means it goes to a good home. i’ve enjoyed having/using it and want to share that if possible. i don’t know how we would do payments either but i’ll keep you in mind.

    Me…I’m just sticking with forks!

i have one of those but besides it so far all i’m finding in my archives is trees. i may sit this one out since none of mine look like vote getters.
