ParticipantIf your host offers mysql then gallery2 is a snap to set up. You shouldn’t have to have them do more than create a database for you. Otherwise it’s not much more than uploading the files into a directory and walking through the steps – there’s one auth file you have to upload in the install process too, but that’s about it. I think others around here use Coppermine, but I haven’t played with it, so I can’t speak on that.
they do and even have a wizard to help set it up. i will definitely be looking into that. thanks.

Participantolavf IIRC you are using your own server too. which means you are ahead of me in the coding department to start with. i have learned enough HTML to know i want a WYSIWYG setup. my user name is accurate and i believe that learning anything is good but frankly at this point in my life the easier the better. my present site was built with MSFrontPage2000 and image ready 7. it’s what i had at the time (5 years ago) and let me get enough up for a vanity site that didn’t completely suck.
mostly, like 90%, i use the site for hosting contest entries. i’ve played with some software like dream weaver and similar stuff but like any tool you need to learn how to use it. between now and the end of the year i have a lot of things to do that don’t involve computers but after that ….
what the site should be is the type of galleries you have where i can show off pictures arranged by subject. that would let me get rid of my flikr account which is used for casual picture posting because it is so simple. with my current website/hosting posting the quick casual picture isn’t either of those. and a complete gallery isn’t easy at all.

ParticipantAnd Curious, don’t lose hope on your fantasy website. I’d been wanting to do mine for a long time, but it took a rare alignment of opportunity, motivation, and creative spark before it happened. I gotta tell ya, as a “code pecker” (what my engineer friend calls software developers :)), it was really pretty refreshing to create just for my own enjoyment again. Reminded me of why I got into it so many years ago.
thanks for the encouragement but i’m not a code monkey nor do i play one on TV and haven’t stayed at a holiday inn in years.
i want a fancy site with buttons, rollovers, pretty galleries and all the bells and whistles but without the work it takes to make it happen. since that won’t happen i am awaiting the motivation you spoke of. that i only get 5 visitors a year to the site hasn’t provided that yet. 🙂

Participantennuipoet i really like what you wrote but in the first paragraph but would change “Fark” to “The Farktography contests provide …..” in the third sentence.
YMMV

ParticipantOne of the things that’s keeping me busy is that my youngest’s football season started. I always shoot the games and share the photos with the team parents, so I decided this year to take it up a notch and create my own website for it. While I was doing that, I went ahead and made it a place to host all of my farktography entries, too. If anyone cares to take a gander and give me feedback on it, it would be much appreciated. You can start with my bees page for this contest or here’s the home page.
Oh, and just to be upfront about it, I do have Google adsense running on it. (I really don’t think it’ll make any significant earnings; I’m just hoping maybe it’ll cover hosting costs.) If you have adblock, I’d be interested on hearing if it screws with the layout.
i’m late to the party here but 2 observations:
1) i hate you and all the others that have websites that are far better than mine. you guys and gals have demonstrated time and time again that i’m a lazy hack by producing the type of site i only dream of.
2) FF with adblock handled your football slideshow with no problems.

Participantfor me this was a great contest. i like green to begin with and there were lots and lots of great shots. i’ve never voted for so many entries.

Participantthanks

Participantravnostic i had meant to give you some compensation green fly wise but at 500 pixels it won’t get the votes.
and now thanks to Elsinore you’re in trouble 🙂
actually you have a better green fly shot than i’ve been able to get so far. tonight’s was a lucky fluke with the green eyes adding to the green china berries. my shot from above green fly photos aren’t as good as yours either.

ParticipantWhen you ask for the html code, there’s a box on there to change to your original size (if you have flickr pro). You’ll want the original if you upload a fark size image.
so there is. please delete my 500 pixel ones. thanks, i’m reentering with the 640 ones.
and thanks for the offer orionid. looks like i won’t need it now.
Elsinore the ones to take out start here.

that’s my story and i’m sticking to it. my paid hosting seems to have changed some stuff and either i can’t login to cpanel or a i get a new design cpanel which will let me upload the images but not grab the image URL later.
so, since i really wanted to play tonight, i put the images on flickr and man is that messed up. scratchpad gives me “throwing away unfetchable …” and the “grab URL” thing fark doesn’t seem to like any better. the “http/bbcode” URL only gives you the 500 pixel wide not the 640 one.
not a good evening.

ParticipantI’ve got 4G in my current rig,
Makes me glad Newegg didn’t have any boards capable of 32G… the Mad Scientist in me was seriously considering it.
i went from 2 to 4 here but running XP Pro i don’t get to use it all.
man i have a love hate with newegg. those email deals means my desk has drool in it all the time.

Participantwell except money 🙂
i added a quad core to this one a while back and more RAM and unless or until the investment in powerball tickets pays off that’s it for now.

Participantwhat makes me sad is this will tarnish real pros.

ParticipantIt also has a fun sort of cross-generational appeal when I take out one or several antiques. Knowing that 40, 50, or even 75 years ago, someone else was taking photos with the exact same camera that I am now is kind of neat.
i have my mom’s Argus that she took to Egypt and surrounding areas in the early 1930s. i have only shot a couple of rolls with it. one was a transit of the panama canal in 1962 but unfortunately i got the focus wrong on the whole roll. i keep meaning to get it out and use it but ….. well it’s not high on my list. both the rolleiflex and the 4×5 speed graphic haven’t been used since i lost the use of a darkroom in 1978.
and except for imaging myself as a fedora wearing photo journalist i’ve never given much thought to who less used them. i just enjoyed the craft involved.

ParticipantShe was also cat fur intolerant and wanted me to get rid of my cat who I had known a lot longer than her. I still have the cat….
boy do i know about that. me and the animals are a package deal. fortunately there are cat and dog lovers out there of the female persuasion.
my current desert pictures aren’t that good. in fact they pretty much suck. the eating part was good though.
