see a brief discription on this page at the “Aires Automat” botom of the page, right side.

    the shutter goes to 11.

actually it goes to 1/500. if you would like to borrow it please PM me. i haven’t used it in years but it worked well the last time it was used. i also could loan you a hand held meter. a quick google didn’t find a manual.

if my votes/entry increases, that makes me feel good, ya know?

using that as a guide i’m in deep doodoo. according to the FSM my vote average has been running 9 and i think that is generous. while there are weeks i post something more to participate than to do well there are other weeks i’m excited about my entries and they still tank. and that is disappointing. not the lack of votes but that i failed to convey what was in my minds eye. or it could be that the idiot voters simply failed to see it 🙂

but once i got over my OCD about entering each and every week the fun returned.

congrats you guys, but holy cow, this was a stat killer! did all the voters get killed or go on vacation or get thrown in jail? (it’s fark, last item most likely of the lot… 😛 )

there was a time when my shots resonated with the voters but that time has faded into antiquity. due in no small part to stiff competition and my shots lacking a certain artistic flair.

while looking at my profile at the FSM it also becomes apparent that total votes cast can make a huge difference in where you place. my only win has one less vote than a shot that finished 5th in another contest.

or maybe that’s what you were saying.

in any case as someone who has fallen from the top ten finishers and went almost two years before snagging another second place …….. well i’m just trying to brag here about getting another second place 🙂

what i’m really saying is F the stats. they’re nice and it’s great that schnee is good enough to maintain the FSM but having a place to regularly show off your photos and a weekly challenge is what this is all about. and i think from your comments elsewhere that you know that. plus there is the bonus of having an excuse to upgrade your camera/lens to better get that winning shot. because it’s all about the stats, right?

and a POS, really old, medium format TLR.

i have a sears tower TLR 2 1/4 square. talk about your really old POS camera. no meter and darned few other functions other than a shutter.

anyway i shot some slides in Monterrey Mexico years ago with it and simply love them. they are just large enough to pass around to friends and are really nice. besides which handing someone who isn’t a photographer a 2 1/4 slide is a trip in itself 🙂

re the three bodies with different film, when i was shooting film i did that. have three minolta XD-11s and kept a roll of triX in one, kodak ASA400 negative in one and a roll of slide film in the last one. the upside was being able to shoot whatever film worked best for that shot. the downside was only having one set of lenses so spontaneity was usually lost.

another note. shot some of each film type if possible at each location. from what you said i’m guessing that’s what you plan but be sure to do it. i got my photography start by assisting in location catalog shooting and was taught film is cheap. and it is compared to your trip expenses. most likely you won’t be going back. your grand kids will thank you. or not.

i had some film developed in Chicago in 1978 but don’t remember where so i can’t help with a good local lab 🙂

what camera are you taking? and since you will say “Brand XX model YYY” and i will never have heard of it let’s try another tack.

the camera you are taking is: 1) a fully automatic point and shot with built in (limited) flash; 2) a full featured SLR any pro would kill for and at least three lenses all of which are F1.4 and will capture the nose hairs of the MC by candle light; 3) somewhere in between but having at least a good built in meter and possibly auto focus.

re negative film v slides. for me it depends to a large extent on what you will do with them later. i like slow slide film for the color but doubt it will suit your lighting needs. sleeping has good points re negative film. personally i’d stick to kodak at ASA400. keep in mind that unless you are personally going to develop and print what you shoot to a large degree you are at the mercy of the lab. and whether it’s wal-mart or photo city deluxe some of the shots won’t look like you remember.

here’s tip to help with that. use a grey card as the first exposure of each roll.

or just as good shot an exposure of your palm as the first shot for each roll. then try like hell to use the rest of the roll in the same lighting.

i had another caliper shot i liked but it didn’t pop like the one entered. and i had a volt reading instead of the temp but decided the temp was unusual so might do better. we shall see.

as usual there are some good shots of odd stuff and some good shots of plain stuff. lots of creative shots tonight.

saw your band photos on flickr. looks like it did pretty good with some tricky lighting.

i will link to mine since it’s 3008 x 2000 pixels and almost 4MB. http://www.davesweblife.com/images/stuff%20for%20friends/seagulls%20033.jpg that shot went to Sam’s and was printed at 20 x 30 to go on a wall. if you look at it full size it doesn’t look all that good. printed it is really nice. well yeah i forgot to get the two dust spots removed before printing so there is that 🙂 the ASA for that shot was set to 400.

it was shot with a knoica/minolta maxxun 7D using a konica/minolta kit lens AF DT zoom 18-70mm F3.5-5.6 which is actually an auto focus film lens. i have some of the same problems you have noted using auto focus both with that and even more so with my Tamron AF 70-300 F4-5.6 LD which again was originally made for the minolta auto focus maxxum film cameras. don’t know what the short lens would have been if bought separately but the Tamron was under $200.

it will come as no surprise that a bright sunny day will greatly enhance the auto focus ability of the lens. one thing i’ve found that also helps is using the center focus spot and not using the multi segment focus. it may mean getting the focus locked by using half shutter release then recomposing before tripping the shutter. doing that has reduced auto focus hunt to an acceptable level.

my camera body has a temporary AF/MF switch conveniently located under my right thumb which is also useful.

i brought my calipers home from work today but have no clear idea how to shoot them.

bucky_bacon how much of a manifold gauge set is needed to qualify as an “instrument of measurement”? the whole thing? one gauge? is R12 better than 134a?

does a volt/ohm meter have to have a reading on it? how about a clamp around meter?

guess i have enough things to get three shots out of this at least. 🙂

It works for me. Looks like there’s (at least as far as the US goes) two centers of population- once close to Indianapolis and one in the Pacific Northwest. Anyone good with math to confirm/refute? I can’t figure out any way to do that other than brute-forcing it.

well today it’s working for me but it can’t be the one we had because i’m not on it. and i’m pretty sure i was.

but it doesn’t matter anyway since i’m not going anywhere anytime soon 🙂

What we need is a virtual dartboard…

we had a map that the farktographers put their cities on but i’ve lost the link to it.

can we get two more people to provide conflicting input for bb?

    🙂

for me it’s the folks above and to the left of center that i find distracting. the one at the opening in the fence. the bright colored clothing draws my eye up.

    but as i said YMMV

I thought people were allowed in the shots?

they may be allowed but bucky_bacon has a point. in his example shot the people distract from the effect. YMMV
