Participantodd, i thought it was about having fun. not votes.
says the guy who has dropped off the top ten.

Participant@#$% Vegas, let’s have the farktography party at schnee’s.
that’s actually much more doable for me. my sister went to the far east which was at least half the reason to go to vegas. the other half being you guys.
but austin has several advantages, not the least of which is being within driving range. plus i can come back through marshall and do some stuff there that’s been put off for a while. i wouldn’t expect schnee put us up but he could be a good tour guide.

Participant(if anyone ever comes and visits me, this is where we’ll go)
google is not my friend. i can’t find casa george’s (or casa jorge’s) on sixth street. at least i thought it used to be on sixth. family owned and operated. great mexican food. they were expanding into another site when i left in ’78.

ParticipantHey, so how bout them Sox? 🙂

Participantsoosh where to start? in case you didn’t notice i am a moderator at this site and while my opinion may have no more weight than anyone else’s but it doesn’t stem from sand in my vagina. as millera9 pointed out i’m a vocal critic of straying off theme. it bothers me and i say as much, regularly. IMHO the main point of these contest even havening a theme is to stretch our collective skills by exposing us to different requirements. either in subject or technique.
now as to your entries i didn’t call you out by name or photo so i’m wondering why the heated response. in an earlier post you wrote Each of my entries manipulated light to produce an image in the camera that wasn’t what an observer at the scene would have seen. i take exception to the claim of manipulating the light. you gathered light that was there and manipulated the resulting image from one that would have resulted in a short exposure. you did not add light to the scene which was the point here. those pictures that did add light by using either a brief burst (off camera flash), or a continuous off camera source such as a flashlight or laser actually added some light.
you are welcome to your opinion and free to express it. that’s what this site is dedicated to but please don’t expect us all to agree with you. and when we don’t it’s (usually) a friendly difference of opinion neither a personal attack nor simply me with an attitude.

ParticipantThe shots I entered tonight, I picked because there was a difference in how the scene looked to the eye compared to how the scene turned out with accumulated light taken into consideration.
And what does that have to do with the theme? Just curious.
I’m guessing that’s how he interpreted the theme title “Painting With Light”
and how others did also. HOWEVER Photograph something, anything, but use additional light, past an on-camera flash. Bounce light, flashlight, lantern, or strobe- Be creative to my mind accumulated light, while creative, doesn’t fit the description. this contest has several entries that are nothing more than ambient light. nice photos but not on topic/theme.
and IMHO that’s a disservice to those that spent the time to actually add light to their entries. mine aren’t getting votes due to the suck factor but they at least had an outside light source. and when i did them i spent some time trying different angles and lighting. a pretty sunset or a dog back lit by the sun ……. well maybe it just bothers a few of us.

attempt at AWpost about the scanner. i’ve been scanning old pictures this weekend. some just old, some damaged. here are some results with and without the Digital ICE program. examples one and three (color shots and old lady) are testaments to the program at it’s best. the middle ones (birthday party) not so much. the “fixed” one doesn’t have the spots but the sharpness leaves a lot to be desired.but even with that it’s just so much easier than trying to fix them in photoshop.

Participantschnee i really liked your shot of ver 3.0

ParticipantSo have we decided if you have to take pictures of your own town or the area reasonably near your own town?
see Elsinore on the 9th at 11:46AM. it’s on the honor system and should be an out of the way place/thing if i read it right. that should help the participation if nothing else.
Curious
Participantwe don’t like faces unless they are kids, puppy’s or cats 🙂
i did look at your photos and really don’t have a comment. they’re nice face shots but that’s not an area that i have any expertise in.

ParticipantFlavivirus Just so I get my lingo, I am assuming that “separation” means that the primary subject is separated by either distance from the other objects or depth of field, yes?
yes that’s what i meant.
Or is separation just that quality of “Oh, i know what the primary subject is”?
that’s the result of the above. the viewer’s eye is drawn immediately to the photos point of interest.
assuming we are talking about folks who read from the top left then across and down and by applying the rule of thirds you would ideally get ……. well what you get is folks who follow the “photo rules” but don’t necessarily have interesting photos. your favorite shot above only partly conforms to “the rules” and violates the one above having space for the subject to move toward. that said, centering the girls loses the interesting details in the background and changes the overall mood. and given the angle and where you are standing moving them to the far right introduces a cluttered background. so yeah, while it may not be a testament to rules adherence it is a really great shot of two young girls enjoying life on an otherwise dreary wet day.

ParticipantI was just thinking how much fun it would be (for those of us with thick enough skins, anyway) to put up a favorite picture for pure critique by other Farktographers. It might be amusing 🙂
well i’m certainly up for it. my comments above are meant to be constructive and i would hope that they are taken that way. we get a lot of the “nice picture contestant X” comments and while we all like getting them they don’t necessarily help us get better.

Participantkmmontandon i have no idea how small your town really is but mine is 30,000 and too big. at least as i interpret the theme. i’m hoping for lots of interesting out of the way places/attractions.
this is not however a ruling by the “committee on theme rules”, just my personal opinion.
