Participantthe general consensus on fark seems to be if it’s art, as in old masters type stuff, you are ok. that seems to include statues.
but IMNAFM. or YMMV

Participantand the one thing i miss about socal is …tidepools.
nice shot. looks like the focus wasn’t thrown off by the water surface which can happen on occasion.

ParticipantI was really happy when I found that field on the weekend (nothing like doing a u-turn on a highway to take a photo.
darned good thing they don’t give tickets for that or i’d never get my license back. between that and backing up a 1/4 mile or so my passengers have nothing to complain about.
and while i’m here … great contest one and all.
Curious
ParticipantElsinore you might want to delete this “Flatulent_Flea [TotalFark] 2007-10-17 11:22:11 PM” since it’s a photoshop.
Curious
Participantnice work both of you. i especially liked “towering” Flavivirus.
i only put my three entries on flickr, the rejects stayed on my HDD.
Curious
Participantwell i’m not as nice. i just uploaded the huge size to flickr and anyone wanting one can do with it as they will*. i tried mine out on my computer by using the right click>set as background thing and they worked ok.
*in a non commercial way 🙂

ParticipantElsinore lets leave it as is. i’ll live with the FSM thing if you all can live with my unorthodox double post.
and turning off voting now doesn’t seem fair for those 9 folks that voted for it.
Curious
Participanti was messing around with some of my images just now and tried using a 3008 x 2000 6.xxMB one as the wallpaper. selected the photo and used right click>set as background and it worked fine. there was a little cropping but nothing special. the one i currently use is from a photoshop contest and is almost square. it definitely crops the top and bottom. i’m thinking any 4×3 ratio or close would work. on flickr a “large” is 1024 x 681 from an “original” of 3008 x 2000. the large is only 301KB unlike the original being 4299.99KB.
one thing i did find using the photo from my HDD is that it really hid the icons. it’s a busy photo of autumn leaves and while i like it and plan on entering it or something similar it’s a bit impractical.
Curious
Participantin the broadest sense your bridge fits “revisited”, Curious thanks Uranus, although as an advocate of strict interpretation of “the rules” and/or “the theme” i guess i can’t be upset to see my loose interpretation challenged. 🙂
Curious
Participantsleeping i didn’t link it for the same reason it wasn’t posted separately. i doubted folks would see it or get the connection. i tend to think the average voter has ADD which may well say more about me than them.
Elsinore and schnee re the “photo stands alone” part. well i’m either hoist by my own petard or the explanation re why the reference photo fails to make sense to you. and perhaps others. a case of YMMV or perhaps MMMV 🙂
schnee wrote I expected to see the top image be an entry in the first Bridges theme, which would have been pretty clever, too, but the FSM doesn’t show that).
didn’t have an entry in “bridges” the contest but did have a previous bridge photo of that bridge from “the path less taken”. and i deliberately didn’t use it because i thought the FSM-R thing would throw the whole entry out.The entry-under-discussion (which I assume is the 2nd image) could have stood on its own, but alas, it does not have that chance.
thanks, you have more faith in it than i did. and i wanted to do a before and after given the theme title.if the FSM is only going to pick up the first image then the whole point of doing this with voting is moot. i didn’t want the first image voted on.
Elsinore can you disable voting at this point? i’d like to leave it up just so folks who might be interested can see what’s happening there.
Curious
ParticipantIt seems as though your aim could be accomplished by posting the “before” shot as a separate posting without voting.
true if they would have appeared one behind the other but there is no way to ensure they would. If your “after” shot can’t stand alone in the same posting without having the “before” shot posted under the same voting, then that suggests to me you need both for your single entry, which doesn’t seem in keeping with the rules about posting photos separately.
ideally i could have posted the after w/o a caption and folks would have (somehow) known how it tied to the theme. or a caption of the place would have explained the tie in. but the reality is that neither were likely to explain the tie in and a verbose caption, while not against the rules, is not as effective as a visual.Curious
ParticipantElsinore from the boobies – Please post each photo separately so they can be voted for individually.
note the use of the word “please”. and only the second photo was to be voted on as the first was a reference shot.
that said is your problem with the technique of before and after or that i didn’t use the actual photo from last time. there were two reasons for not using the original photo. one being stated above and the other that i didn’t want to go through all the “it’s a repeat post” stuff for a photo that was meant to be a reference only.
Curious
ParticipantCurious did you mean to post two shots in the same post and leave voting enabled?
yeah, it was a before and after concept based on the theme being “bridges two”. i decided to use a different shot for the before, rather than last years, since it shows the pilings better.
and it’s doing better in the voting than my other two. didn’t expect that.
Curious
Participanti’ll probably shoot mine big (in jpeg) and upload them to flickr. that way folks get a choice of sizes. the entry one will be 640 and hosted on my website with a link to the ones on flickr for anyone who might want one.
i use paid hosting because it allows me better control long term. the stuff i have on flickr is just to share with you guys and is a small part of what i’ve shot or entered.
Curious
Participantwell i passed on the car show in gulfport for several reasons, time and the heat being two. we did see this purple truck that my friend took those shots of. this was cruising and car show weekend on the gulf coast but i didn’t have time to really enjoy it. got one crap shot for “tourist” and some nice “bridges” ones.
all that after a couple of hours in the “you pull it yard”. bad news, lost a torx bit. good news, had some nice gentleman loaned me a larger sized one that i own but hadn’t brought.
