The outside of the image is where, in this electronic format, the pixels end.

while that is literally true of this display medium it’s not necessarily true as to what the viewfinder sees. i’m a minolta fanboy and all my 35mm film cameras see 90% of the final image. my maxxum7d sees 95%. for these contests i usually leave any “extra” image area rather than crop since i’m not going for high art here. if i crop it’s to pick an area or subject from an image to highlight it to match that weeks theme. any border would have to be applied in post production. and it my considered opinion that we would stretch ourselves more as photographers if there was NO post production allowed. not even cropping.

as a practical matter would that give film users a border option since they can pick the perimeter of their scan? probably but to tell them that they MUST submit w/o borders means they have to crop either in the scan or afterwards. and in any case we rely on the honor system for the most part to have folks adhere to “the rules”.

the long and short of this is i agree with millera9. no borders. all the contestants efforts should go to creating the best in camera entry they can.

now all that said your second shot is really neat and (i think) enhanced by the border. also sent my sister the altoids/pintoids link since she is a) a photographer b) currently playing with altered altoid cans.

*) The first person to post a photo “torn paper” border that’s really subliminal bouncing boobies around the outside WILL be posted the week I have that career-apex life-best photo submission, that other one will win, and I will be mad.

that type of border would be off limits even under the looser rules we are discussing. i voted don’t care but after rethinking the subject maybe no borders is best. it sure is less distracting. same goes for the habit of centering some folks have/had. just because you can really isn’t a reason to do something.

i really need to do a test shot occasionally to see if mine needs cleaning. a really good shot which i had blown up to 20×30 has a spot that only i see but it bothers the heck out of me.

U-Man historically we use the honor system. there is a bot that checks for images that were entered in earlier contests since you can only use an image once but if a repeat is found the usual reaction from us is that it’s an honest mistake. i know, i’ve done that.

    with a fairly predictable winner.

    Really ?

Without to see what photos are to enter contest, I predict that you prediction is not so much predictable. If many Farktographers will view this thread, I have feeling that you will have suprise on this, kmmontandon.

May I ask it…..What type image you predict will win?

Curious, because I have look on these contest for 1 year, and I have NEVER to pick the real winner yet. It’s maybe I have bad taste, or all of voters have better on me. Please to tell.

i think the point was plain = ordinary therefore highlighting the beauty in a flower or sunset = contest entry = votes. and if past experiance is a good guide that is what will happen. not that there’s anything wrong with that.

those that strive for the more artistic (whatever that may be) will get votes but not end up in the top five. keep in mind that the voting is open to any farker with an active account. and the attention span of a gnat. ooops didn’t mean to say that out loud 🙂

and if you’re looking for voting trends macros, sunrise/sunset, kids and variations on drinking or sex tend to do well. combine any of those with better than average technical skills and your golden.

Gimp for mac http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/ is there. the Gimp is what all the cool (and cheap) kids are playing with now. there are tons of tutorials for it. Google will find them.

if one looks at the boobies on this it’s been almost two yeas since the inception. i’m thinking that once the Europeans get done we might want to get the film developed even if there may be a shot or two left.

since i don’t shoot weddings take this with a grain of salt. the “high speed” cards write to the card faster thereby allowing for shots being grouped closer in real time. think continuous mode. from what i’ve read (and my personal DSLR) the continuous mode has a pretty big buffer. mine is 9 shots. so if one is shooting weddings how often do you need to shot that many that close together.

if you’d said you were doing fast action sports shooting … well there you might need the faster write speed. YMMV

and just FWIW i’m using slow speed CF cards and can get three frames a second for that 9 frame total. shot 9, pause slightly to partially empty the buffer and shot some more.

i’m with Analogy on the wider lens. if that 28-105mm is film settings she’ll be looking at the 35mm she’s used too which just isn’t wide enough for what you say it will be used for. and even if it’s that range in digital it’s slow and impractical in lower light settings. you want a lens that’s fast enough that you don’t have to use flash all the time in lower light. a 17mm-??mm at f2.8 will run more money but be a lot more useful.

The arrangement of the photos changes depending on how wide your browser window is, you’ll have to be a little more specific.

hey it’s all about me. browser FF on a Samsung SyncMaster 204t monitor set to 1024×768. now which picture is it?

    🙂

    hint: it’s labeled 11 of 17

i like them too but if you’re looking for a formal framed (as in picture frame not framed composition) shot i didn’t really see an of the portrait type. if mom is wanting a more candid instead of a portrait you’re golden. third row, third from the left would be my pick for mom. mainly for the composition and lighting.

or you could do one of those frames that have a central image flanked by smaller ones and have the best of both world. use the third, third and surround it with some of the “wacky” ones.

    but that’s me YMMV.

news stations on their websites are only showing dramatic footage without any real content. Very frustrating considering how many people I know who’ve been evacuated and the amount of real information available in a thread full of civilians with radios on a fake news website.

first glad you and RcMacStudent are ok. my sister lives in long beach and folks keep asking me if she is ok. people who don’t know socal seem to think SD and malibu abut each other.

re why the quote, when i had to evacuate for Katrina the news coverage was the same. 90% devoted to new orleans, done by people who didn’t know the area, and only occasionally the gulf coast and virtually nothing about the northshore of the lake. when i came back two weeks after the storm hit i had no real idea what i’d find.
