Not to offend anyone but we seem to have gotten a lot of not so technically great shots of some really cool collections this week.

Oh well I guess that’s farktography!

    hey i resemble that !!

well i won’t say that my collections are cool to others but i like them.

and it’s contests like this that farktography should be on occasion. technical merit and sticking tightly to the week’s theme also have their place but it’s contests like this that grow the membership.

i saw the theme this weekend and got excited — had to work extra days this week — 15 minutes before the contest was posted shot some, resized, uploaded and posted.

they are snapshot quality at best but i really wanted to post this week. and after seeing how well you all did and rethinking my various “collections” of things … well thank god i’m not here for the cash prizes.

    stapler i like #6 best.

i have three and one is a head shot. the other two are going in the other direction. no, not that direction. more of a random cat being a cat thing.

I’m not to keen on getting it back, my photo bites. I should have snapped a second one, the first one was sort of an oops, the camera went off moment.

well i’m of the same mind but i would like to see how others did. i shot a digital backup with the camera i keep in the car and it was less than stellar.

    Ok.

I’ll get the thing developed then. Not sure how much it will cost to do, so if I need help with the cash, I’ll let y’all know.

    Is there a problem XenPix?

my question also. i’m really curious to see how well this turns out 🙂

well having been all excited about this contest and planing on taking photos just for it i had a “senior moment” yesterday and completely forgot to take the photos.

and didn’t remember that it was Wednesday/contest day until late in the evening. and while i do have a bazillion shallow DOF photos in my archives they weren’t shot to match the theme so i opted out.

and probably just as well since there are some really great shots in the contest. i tried to vote for those that seemed to match the theme best but will admit to voting for a couple of good macros too.

i like the top one best. the lower one has (for me) too much foreground.

just wanted to say hi and that the recent contests have been pretty good. seems like a good theme really helps the contest. DUH

maybe i’ll be able to find some time to get back into these but until then i’m enjoying looking and voting.

well i just scanned two old pictures from the austin area. one was shot on seattle film works “movie” transfer stock and the colors aren’t too good. have been able to print it but color tweaking in PS isn’t getting it. (all color adjustments were over the entire image) the other is ok color wise but the scanner picked up some odd purple spots. fixing them would be spot correction and i’ll just enter it as is. with luck i’ll find a B/W one before contest time. i know there must be some in my contact sheets.

Constantly rebooting between OSs is counterproductive.

found that to be all too true so i set up my two dual boot boxes on a KVM switch and use one just for windows and one just for Ubuntu. took some tweaking and good luck to get a network going but that’s ok now. what i wanted was to learn about linux and find an alternative to having vista rammed down my throat.

i will be rebuilding my web site shortly using “coffeecup” software that my web host gives you for a years subscription. i’m betting that wordpress isn’t compatible with it. or may not be needed, i haven’t looked into their galley building stuff yet.

    that is nifty

BUT it doesn’t have a linux option. oh well. as much as i’m enjoying trying to convert to open source and Ubuntu it does have drawbacks.

having just finished the second test here are the results. two photos air dried in the oven with just pilot light heat for an hour and a half. test photo one half covered in parchment paper then the entire photo (and parchment paper) covered in felt. 165 degrees for 2 minutes. slight sticking of the felt area but very little texturing. the parchment covered area didn’t stick but textured like crazy. it’s really not all that bad but it’s noticeable, knocks the gloss down a good deal and reduces sharpness. not what you’d want.

the second photo was felt covered only. felt stuck slightly and left a fine texture. not real noticeable but there if one looks. the photo is now a slight bit less glossy but still sharp. had done another print of the same photo as a control.

so the lesson here is print your inkjet photos with as little ink as possible to get a good finished result. then let them dry ….. and dry ……. and dry. then mount them. we all knew inkjet took a while to fully dry. maybe just not how long.

well that was interesting. just did two more trials using felt this time. half the photo was covered with parchment paper and then both that half and the remain half were covered with felt. “craft” felt from wal-mart. 165 degrees for two minutes and no texture in either test. however both these photos were rejects and had been air drying for at least two weeks.

will make two more prints, let them get dry to the touch, use a hair drier on one to further the drying and test both. in fact i’ll make three and let the third air dry for two weeks. wish me luck, i’d sure like to solve this and be able to use the dry mount press.
