Participanti was told i can’t take it back 🙂 it’s turning out to be one of the most successful gifts i’ve given.

ParticipantThat Samsung really does have a lot of built-in stuff. Are the frames and filters applied at the time of taking the picture, or do you take the picture, then apply it through what amounts to in-camera post-processing?
that particular camera shows the finished exposure in the LCD prior to shutter release. for instance if you pick the car shaped frame that is displayed, then you frame/compose the subject within it. see the example on their site. also note that frame is solid therefore masking out all else. when playing with the color effects i found the “red” filter really warmed up certain shots, especially those shot with flash. for someone like my friend who does almost no post processing it really adds a lot of creatively.
of course since it replaced this http://www.davesweblife.com/images/stuff%20for%20friends/gifts-08.jpg it’s no surprise that it has more features. the sad/strange/maybe not surprising thing is that HP215 with a 4MB card was $3.00 more than the D53 when bought on sale about 4 1/2 years ago.
and yes, the more she used the new one the more excited she got. she knew the HP was limited but hadn’t wanted to upgrade. it had been “good enough”. i’m thinking she’ll get a little more use from this one.

ParticipantHappy New Year!!
what they said.

Participantwell i may have to eat some humble pie ………. yum pie ………. regarding in camera effects. bought a Samsung D53 for a friend for Christmas. black friday sale at wal-mart, camera and 1 GB SD card for just over a hundred dollars. it is similar in features to this one http://www.samsungcamerausa.com/productdetails.asp?productid=206 which has all sorts of built in filters and effects. see about halfway down the page. the framing effects done in camera would prompt accusations of PS when viewed. the color effects are interesting also.
oh well, we have said many times that the line is getting blurred. seems like it is even more so than i thought.
Happy New Year

ParticipantActually, the channel mixer’s a pretty low level tool. All it does is mix the colors across the entire photo to the level you specify, much like hue and saturation tool. It isn’t a spot treatment, and it makes changes across the entire picture as the rules mention, so it’s within the bounds of the rules as currently written to my understanding.
ok i played around with the channel mixer a bit and my original comment still stands. yes the effects are across the image but by being able to tweak each color you are exerting more creative control than simply sliding the hue control. channels may be low level but hue is even lower. let us aim for the lowest level of image manipulation.
between allowing some pretty minor/typical editing which still lets the photography stand on its own
emphasis added. it only stands on it’s own WITHOUT editing.
i said last time this came up that the equine mistreatment would stop and it will. now. you won’t hear from me again on this subject. those of you who set the site up a year ago came to a consensus on what was allowable. there have been those that bent the rules without asking and those nice enough to ask just what was permissible. it seems a rewrite for clarity is in order and i’ll live with whatever you all decide.
Curious
Participantok you guys have good points on cropping. and when i was doing darkroom work seldom used the full frame myself. and i really don’t have too much of a problem with the PS on the entire image. ok i do but i can understand why folks want it and have used it myself on infrequent occasions.
to me what Saldo1981 did to the example is PS. grabbing a slider in hue or saturation isn’t. most everybody now days has some simple image enhancing app and has to use it to resize if nothing else. let’s try to limit what can be done to that entry level otherwise those with PS (or Gimp) and time get an (unfair) advantage.

Participantis this where i jump in and rant (once more) about only submitting images that have been manipulated in camera?
you want to enter B/W fine, set your camera to B/W if it’s digital or buy some tri-x if you’re shooting film.
regular readers of my rants will remember that i don’t even like being able to use PS to crop. learn to compose your darned shots. in the digital age there is very little extra expense to shooting butt loads of exposures. bracketing with digital is easy (well on higher end cameras) and moving around or using the zoom to compose costs you nothing. THINK about what your picture will look like when viewed.
and no, more often than not my images don’t seem to have that level of thought or care given to them. but i know when they are taken that i haven’t given them the attention that a good photo should get. i’m lazy and know it. but neither i nor anyone else should be able to “fix” a poorly executed shot in PS.

Participantbatteries (and film) in pockets until needed. Let lenses acclimate (if you take a lens from the warmth of a truck into the cold outside, it will fog).
gloves with a finger cut out, but save that finger and use it as a removable sleeve. Protect yourself – hat, dress in layers, don’t forget good socks and boots.
/ah, what do I know, I’m in Texas…
and i’m in southeast LA but i agree with schnee. maybe not so much about the glove finger thing though. there i’d lean toward staplermofo. personally i think you can manipulate a DSLR with gloves on. the lens fogging can and will occur if the temp difference is big enough. and warm batteries and film help both of them.
you didn’t say just where your friend is but i’m betting the roads will be bad, at least compared to what you normally see. and i don’t mean san diego but what we consider “winter” roads in the lower 48. and services will be few and far between. be careful.

Participantmillera9 idle curiosity, did you take the pot one second? she seems to have blood on her boob from when her heart was ripped out.
Curious
Participantthanks millera9 it’s the occasional comment like that which makes the lack of votes ok. 🙂
yours were really good this week. well thought out and well shot. as you say the better ones always inspire all of us. it’s alway interesting to see those that think outside the box especially if they have the skill to bring it off. monkeybort‘s are a good example this week.
Curious
Participantwell it hasn’t been quite a year for me ……… since i joined. the past year has actually been quite eventful but that’s a story for another time.
i want to thank all of you for some good times.
and a special thank you to those who have encouraged my participation here. farktography and farktography.net have been bright spots in this past year.
Curious
Participantsome people known to have both barbies and ideas didn’t enter. i’m looking at you CaptainJim.
if it’s just the holidays we’ll know next week. anyone who doesn’t have at least one shot for that lives in a cave. alone.
Curious
Participantmillera9 glad you found a reason to enter. yours are pretty good. took some thinking and some time to do.
actually several of you thought yours out more than i did. i wanted to get the cat attacking barbie but that didn’t work out. of course my cats are half wild and don’t like being manhandled which didn’t help.
and FWIW my barbie is a knock off. got her at the flea market sunday for a dollar. you can tell she’s cheap because half and hour after the camera came out she has her clothes off. 🙂
Curious
Participantor didn’t have a barbie, didn’t want to buy one, have no ideas …………..
or because we were so stroked in here it just seemed that everyone would be.
