Participant4pm outdoors, I don’t know if you’ll need umbrellas so much, but you’ll definitely want to grab a couple 5 in 1 reflectors and spare hands if you can to help hold them up. Plus if you’re outdoors, I don’t know if you’ll have time to set up everything for all the shots since the couple will be moving around a lot (unless you’re talking about doing the pre-wedding photos that lots of couples are doing…then yeah, I get the umbrella setup, but don’t know if they’d be strong enough without entering the photo). For the actual ceremony, you might just have to settle with the ambient light and some fill flash from a hand-held strobe.
As far as setting up for pre-wedding and renting, there’s a video I posted a couple days ago. It’s a 2-hour speech by someone from B&H and he goes into how to set up the lights, the correct angles to start with, metering the foreground and background to give texture to the subject, differences between umbrellas, strobes, and beauty cones, etc.

ParticipantGot it. Thanks, fluffy! I’ll sign up for TF when time runs out so you get it back. 🙂

ParticipantI’m not sure, either. I’m guessing you’d have gotten some sort of e-mail with instructions? I’d have no idea… I just remember a discussion about it previously.

ParticipantAlso, what time (EST) are the TFers able to post, so I can figure it out for UK time?

ParticipantI’ve tried “clean sensor” and rocket blowers several times with mine and it never cleared, but perhaps I should get sensor swabs a go, since it seems more likely to be on my sensor than on the lens. I’m just scared shitless I’m going to ruin my gear somehow. Any tips other than the general hubbub my google-fu will give me?

ParticipantYeah, the “implied remoteness” was throwing me, too. I don’t know if mine necessarily imply remoteness, but they fit definitions 1, 2, and/or 3:
des?o?late
- barren or laid waste; devastated: a treeless, desolate landscape.
- deprived or destitute of inhabitants; deserted; uninhabited.
- solitary; lonely: a desolate place.
- having the feeling of being abandoned by friends or by hope; forlorn.
- dreary; dismal; gloomy: desolate prospects.
This is what I’ve been staring at…a meadow in the middle of a forest, full of grass and green, could be both remote and desolate, but I don’t know if that’s fitting for this theme or not. A dilapidated and empty building could be remote and desolate, but I also don’t know if that’s theme-fitting. Any clarifications, Kes?

ParticipantCan a large indoor room be considered landscape, if it gives the feeling of desolation? How desolate is “remote”? (i.e. if I have a photo of a tree with leaves, a tree without, and a landscape with nothing else, is that considered desolate enough?) Can desolate mean very much alive but without people? Struggling to narrow this one down for some reason. When I think “desolate” I don’t necessarily think desert and swamps – I think forests and meadows, too.

ParticipantI have similar spots that show up on my D7000 when I shoot at high f-stops. It’s annoying; it’s not the sensor, and it’s not on the outside of the glass, which means it’s something inside the kit lens. Is yours a similar issue?

ParticipantHax. Hax, I say! Amazing capture if it’s real.

ParticipantThanks for that, fluffy. I’m looking at getting a set of Kaavie receivers and a trigger – seems like a frequently-used brand over here with good reviews, and it’s 40 GBP for the trigger and 3 receivers, so that’ll be good for multiple flashes. I think I’ll get those instead of the corded version I had listed above.

ParticipantEh, scratch the softbox for now. While I can get a good one in the US for cheap and free shipping, if I want it in the UK I end up paying 2x the price, plus another 2x that price for shipping, for a total of 4x the US price. I’ll wait til a friend is coming to visit and have them bring one with them. Been looking for a while but can’t find a good, cheap softbox anywhere in the UK for some reason.

Participantzinc – Thanks for the link, lots of good tips there. Now I’m leaning toward getting a soft box as well as an umbrella for versatility, and the YN-560 looks like a really good choice from all the reviews I’m reading. I’ll probably end up getting that as well. Looks like a lot of people suggest the cowboy wireless receiver as well, and it’s not too pricey, so that’ll end up in my shopping cart.
‘guine – That’s pretty much what I was hoping to hear for the gorillapod. Thanks.
rav – Yep, cropped sensor. Sounds like the gorillapod will be good for my street photos, and the 50mm will hold me over for portraits for a while, once I get the lighting set up.
Thanks for the help, all. Sounds like I’m not missing anything too important.

ParticipantNikonian here, but I’m still paranoid about some things like that 😉

ParticipantI remember there was a reason I wanted to photograph the desert before I left California…damn, need to go exploring here instead.

ParticipantWhat’s a library? Do they have one in the UK?
