So google plus has a photography contest grouping? Hmmm…getting interested.

Does that mean we’d do a repeat of a theme that had high vote counts, or does it mean it’s just picked as the “best theme” for reference?

^Oops. I just woke up and threw up the links asap without checking back here first to see if you were posting. Sorry for the extra work, Els 😉

I have rainy skies and clouds covering the area around me. No shooting for the next couple nights -_-

I was reading up on this earlier today. The article on BBC said a 15-inch telescope lens would get you an okay look, but it’s still going to be quite a ways off. I’ll see if I can find a nook outside the city that’s plenty dark for me to get starlight, then try to get the asteroid as per your very helpful suggestions.

I think Alaska has DST as well, though. It’s Arizona and Hawaii that don’t. These also just happen to be the two states I have lived in for the past six years.

The UK also has BST vs. GMT – we just had our switch 2 weeks ago.

/Thanks Rav – I’ll start checking at midnight my time just to be safe the time change didn’t mess anything up (it’s too early in the a.m. for me to do the real maths here). Send me a pm with your links and I’ll get them up right away for you 🙂

I would take my camera with me more often but when I go to work I don’t trust my locker at work to remain private and I’m sure as hell not leaving a thousand dollars worth of camera stuff in my car in the mall parking lot all day.

This applies to me, too. Except I don’t even have a locker, so I’d pretty much be leaving my camera bag in a common room with a couple hundred other people trusting nobody to take it while I’m a hundred feet away in the lab…. Yeah, I don’t have that much trust in humankind, sorry 😉

That being said, we’re having a big Christmas lighting ceremony on Thursday in Manchester, and I need to bring my camera, so I’m figuring I’ll ask my supervisor if I can lock it in his room…or maybe hide it behind a ton of toxic stuff nobody else will want to go near.

Total Farkdom! Eeeee! Thanks, Rav! That means I get to wake up at 2 a.m. instead to post the shots…maybe I can actually fall back to sleep after I’m done 😉

You’re welcome. Film is cheap (though I can’t find b/w), but processing not so much–I figure if I’m going to spend it, it’s worth it to get them posted earlier. Where the heck are you that the thread goes up at 2am?!? In San Diego it should be 5pm, PST.

And on the note of not finding b/w film, mods,–is it okay to take pictures with b/w in mind, then scan them as such, or is that going too far from ‘film’. I just shot a roll that I’d envisioned in b/w until I found nobody carries it (except one shop too far away to drive to). I shot it anyway.

Moved about a month ago to the UK. Still haven’t changed my location on my profile…eh. I’m in Manchester now, so it should be about 2 a.m. my time when the posting opens for TFers on Fark time.

Actually, to double-check, what time *is* live posting for TFers? For me as a liter it was always midnight EST (5 a.m. GMT). Is it 3 hours before (so 9 EST)?

So, yesterday I asked a woman I work with whose regular job is photography, and her advice was to just ask people you know. She’s also (a rather artsy) make-up artist. I know it’s not very helpful advice.

It’d be a good starting point, but I think it’s just dipping your toes into the waters. People you know will be easier to work with and you can see how you need to direct them and what you need to come prepared with. When you work your way up to people you don’t know, you’ll be more confident in what you’re doing, but it’ll also be harder because you’re not as comfortable with them. I agree though, it’s a start.

Hey Farktog, like the pub shots. What did you mean by “used my external flash properly”, as some one who struggles with flash photography I am curious.

    Thanks, Fluffy.

I bought a flash (Vivitar – I’m not able to afford the proper Nikon speedlights…yet) external to the one built into my camera. What I meant by using it properly was just that I’ve practiced a little at home or with friends, but this was my first time using it in public, and getting it right.

I’ve played with it a little bit, so I knew its capabilities and settings, but this was my first time shooting a big group of people, and it was in an enclosed area, so it forced me to explore the room’s shape – pointing the flash straight up gives a nice draping look over the room and the light falls off fast. Pointing it to a wall can give you some nice side-lighting. Pointing it up and to the front gives you draping but extends the light…etc.

I always learn the most from experience, so me “using it properly” just means I finally got it right, and it happened to be in a public setting so I was happy that things clicked for me at just the right time. I hate being the guy in the corner taking everything apart because I have no idea what I’m doing (I’ve been there too many times already, haha).

    /Thanks, Rav

I can post OBO for both of you…you know, if you’re alright with a ‘liter doing it (…if I set 10 alarms, I’m *sure* I can get up at 5 a.m.)
