I see where he’s coming from. I think the standard for amateur photographer now is “snap one item that pops in a sea of other items, add a shitload of contrast, maybe black and white it, give it a fancy title and deep description, and TA-DA! ART!” When I scan through flickr, I see tons of these floating about, not actually having meaning except for the meaning the photographer forces into it.

Personally, looking at some of the work the Dusseldorf style has brought, I can appreciate it when it’s done right. I just think it’s something that’s been overdone, so that gives it a bad name.

I think the thing that annoys me the most is when someone has to describe to me what I should feel about their photograph. It’s like going wine tasting, hating a wine, and having the server give you 100 reasons why you should LOVE this wine. No, this is how I feel, and that’s that. If I look at a photograph and it doesn’t pull me in with emotion, giving me a paragraph explanation of what I *should* feel about the loneliness and detachment and rapturous beauty you supposedly achieved isn’t going to help. I’ll just look at it and think, “nope – if that’s what you’re going for, you need to try again.”

Example…here’s one of my shots with a Holga. I like it because of the contrasting colours, the balance, and the contrast. I don’t really get a grab of “emotion” from it, but that’s alright with me.

Now, from what I can gather in this article, the author is despising making a photograph something more than it really is. Imagine I put a fancy title – called it “Wachsende aus der Tiefe” which is what I got with a quick google translate of “Growing from the Depth.” Now, I add the description, “Heroic flowers rising above the darkness that attempts to engulf them – as shadows surround them, they endure and bloom to bring a new light to the world that desperately needs them. The long stalks will not allow them to detach, and as the sun falls they will be swallowed to doom and their light will, inevitably, leave this planet empty. For this one moment, however, there is hope.”

Okay, I’m not all too well trained in literature, so I’m sure I could come up with something better, but the point is I’m now forcing you to feel emotion for this photograph. And for some people, the ones who are really convincing, it works. If you’re suave and can talk well, you can convince people your artwork is fantastic even if, really, there’s nothing there. I know pretentious people that LOVE that sort of bullshit (I once had a 20 page book report rough draft due and couldn’t fill the final 3 pages. I bullshitted it – complete and utter with no substance bullshit. The professor LOVED those three pages and asked that I do the entire report on it…these are the sorts of pretentious twats I imagine loving art with explained emotion). At least, that’s what I’m taking away from this article.

    /TL;DR

Picture worth a thousand words examples –

Should we allow this? – http://www.flickr.com/photos/eddmun/454335362/lightbox/

    No (not diverse enough)

Or try to aim at this and delete the three pose entries? –
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/x_therumor/6193109777/lightbox/

    Yes

But then again…what about THIS? http://www.flickr.com/photos/17665703@N03/6141189546/lightbox/

    Yes (diversity)

I’m all for a loose interpretation, but that first one just isn’t enough… reminds me of the Playboy Interview photos.

Some of my attempts (plants, dogs) are not like your second example, but others are closer (an accordion player at the public market).

    But that’s just me.

My thoughts exactly, but then again if we start quibbling of what’s enough for diversity and what’s not, it’s all going to get muddled. This might just turn into another event where the voters will show us what’s best – I have a feeling the more diverse pictures will get a boost in votes, anyways.

They just played the London game a few weeks ago.

When I was in 6th grade I was in London during Thanksgiving and my family and I actually forgot it was Thanksgiving – until a Beefeater at the Tower of London wished us Happy Thanksgiving “To you American types”. “Oh..yeah…thanks.”

    We had McDonald’s.

The Chargers weren’t playing, so I couldn’t be bothered to pay much attention 😉 I honestly forgot Thanksgiving was coming up as well until coworkers mentioned it to me a couple weeks back. Oops.

I like the suggestions but it’s hard to show up drunk to my own house…note I say hard, not impossible. Plus no one in the family shares love of football like I do (I can watch any pro team and enjoy it) but it’s also that I don’t like to cook…

When you do show up to your own house unexpectedly drunk, it’s bound to be a legendary night.

My mom’s favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, so me being out of the states for the first time this year, she was nearly in tears just imagining me going without a turkey dinner. Made it all better when I promised her I’d get some turkey from somewhere.

…Wild Turkey bourbon counts, right? 😛

/edit to say: Damn, I miss football.

Ugh. Just…ugh. I was sort of happy with what shots I had in mind to use until I saw these. Guess I’ll have to get out and try harder 🙄

Oh, and IMO all these are fine to use, but it’d be U-man’s call.

My mom’s b/f actually has this one. Haven’t gotten a chance to try it out, though – too far away at the moment.

Well damn, I missed the discussion…been out most of today. But I agree with the notion that the day of or even a couple days before the contest is too late to be limiting a theme, and we definitely need to be mindful that the vast majority of participants will only have the wording of the theme description posted in the Fark Boobies to go off of. (Yeah yeah, I know most people don’t even read it…). Dunno if we need a week cutoff for changes, but I can see an argument for it given that the theme is linked to on Fark the week before.

And no, orionid, that won’t get you banhammered. Unless you post a picture of actual cock and balls.

Personally, I feel most of the time the majority of the issues should be/are hammered out in the voting thread. That’s pretty much the place where we see if it’s going to be a broad or narrow theme – themes shouldn’t be changed much once they’re in the hopper, IMO.

Had to go archive diving, which is a shame, because Manchester has a gorgeous city hall, but I haven’t found the time to trek into the central city for a good photo shoot yet. Just look how photogenic this beast is!

I gots no pics and no ideas and minimal time. I’ll put down some money that says I’ll be downtown with a tripod after dark on Tuesday.

You and me both…unless I can find some decent photos in an archive-dive.

Part skill, part being in the right place at the right time. I know if I was forced into these peoples’ shoes when their shutter triggered, I’d probably have a 10% chance of coming up with an image like theirs. I still struggle a ton with my composition, but even then getting the metering right, knowing what to focus on specifically, squaring things away.

I wish I could see the raw images and find out what they do as far as contrast changes, making colours vibrant, cropping, etc…
