On another note, Freaking voters, man. I thought this was going to be a bad week for me, but it’s going to be the best week in almost half a year (if you don’t count Macro Bugs, which I expected to do reasonably well at, considering that it’s my thang lol). I’m not complaining, exactly, just saying… 😉

Is your server at home or remote (ala godaddy et al)? Either way, if it’s windows based, it should have an IP address, and you ought to be able to FTP into it using Explorer, Mozilla, and several other browsers. Not as nifty as Filezilla, but gets the job done in a pinch.

VPN!!! Those are the right letters, lol. Anyhow, that’s the direction we’re looking into, rather than an FTP set up. Our server is at home, and currently it’s not set up with an FTP server. 😉 Also and anyhow, it’s a linux based server, though as far as me as a user, I don’t have to know linux, I do my thing on my Vista laptop and let Olav tinker around with the server. 🙂

It’s okay, as I said, the “problem” rarely comes up. But I always appreciate it when someone tries to help. 🙂

I don’t find it to be so. Maybe you have a more difficult set-up.

It would be literally impossible if I was trying to post a newly downloaded picture when I wasn’t home, until we get the VNS (I think those are the right letters – the thing that will let us access our network from elsewhere) figured out. But if I’m home it’s not any more difficult than using a web host. I do have a bukket if I am overwhelmed by the urge to post something I just downloaded when I’m out. But I think that’s only happened once. 😛 If I’ve already put it in the right folder (through our network) at home, I can still nab and post it from elsewhere.

Did that paragraph make any sense? I’m sure I could have been more succinct…. 😉

Heh. Until I saw it posted in the thread, I forgot that I’d taken that second picture as part of a series of pictures lying on my belly and cursing because I couldn’t get the exact angle I wanted. I think I took twenty shots of that damn tree lol.

I’d like to posit that the themes are also getting a little too “inside baseball”, in the sense that we really seem to be trying to hard to make things tricky and sometimes a little exclusive: Running From Camera, Color Popping, any of the HDR themes, Black, White, and Grey all over as examples.

I don’t mind the idea of stretching our abilities, but I don’t think we should do it to the extent that we:

a) discourage casual participants

b) raise the difficulty level to where not everyone can participate.

I’ve become discouraged lately, thinking that there are so many rules to some of the contests, that I don’t want to have to justify an entry, and I know better. It’s a perception thing.

Put yourself in the position of someone who’s a little shy, maybe not a joiner, and looking into Farktography. Some of our contest themes lately might seem a little off-putting to someone like that.

I’m just saying.

I think there may be a lot to this. Monumental thru B&W&G were all either difficult to photograph (rain, all night long) or difficult to make interesting (monumental, passenger side) … I think B&W&G falls into a little bit of both. I know I’ve been finding it hard to care lately. My whole lot this week were archive dives. The most recent one is from July 2008. That’s just sad. I even had an idea for a new picture, but was so uninspired by it that I didn’t take it. I think it was probably the right choice, based on the voting so far. 🙁

I’m looking forward to Trees a little, because I love trees, but they, too, can be hard to photograph cuz there are usually all these other damn trees around so your special tree doesn’t stand out. 😛 And no matter how much I love trees, it’s hard to make a picture of them be a WOW picture. I’m sure there will be some in the contest. But will one of them be mine? Not likely. I’m going out this weekend and taking pictures of trees anyway, but … Still, I think it will get more participation than some of the recent contests.

One of the things I love about farktography is that it makes me think about and look at things I might not otherwise. But I guess that can be applied in too narrow a sense, especially if we want to attract more participation.

Eh, I dunno. We have these conversations every so often. 😉

I guess I’m glad that all my pix are now doing (sucking?) equally… last night my favorite, the one I really liked for the contest, didn’t even have a vote. *sigh* There are times when you really get paranoid and start taking it personally. 😛
