ParticipantNo I think the point to encourage participation is totally valid and something I hadn’t thought of.

ParticipantIn general we want themes to be as friendly and open as possible. I think that caveat was to discourage people from posting pictures from amusement parks, zoos and monster truck rallys, etc.

ParticipantYes, you can scan from film for any contest.

ParticipantAnd Elsinore nah I’ll just go with the other two. That’s what I get for second guessing my shots right before contest time when I’m hungry and horny and tired.

ParticipantMopsy I see your daytime Eisenhower Expressway and raise you : http://www.flickr.com/photos/kestrana/4620472600/ 😉
Yours is prettier! Did you take it from the Sears Tower too?
I don’t know about prettier but yes, it’s from the Sears Tower. As soon as I saw your pic I was like “oh hay i kno whar that is”

ZE your story about people trying to open the mailboxes made me laugh – even if they had been successful, who exactly did they think was picking up the mail?

ParticipantElsinore I’m adding the Post office to my list of examples in the boobies tonight to represent soft infrastructure per the discussions here. If that’s not okay G+ me or FB msg me.

ParticipantAnd aspidites, I think that leads back into the box.

ParticipantU-man I actually had that thought while posting. I almost made a comment about how people frown on shooting the President even though he would be a valid shot for this contest. But I didn’t know if that would be in taste so I deleted it. Sometimes I forget this is fark…

ParticipantRE: aperture priority vs. shutter priority
I’m not a photography expert but I love aperture priority and being able to just spin the wheel a bit to get a dark/lighter/sharper image as I adjust between fstops. If you found your shutter speed wasn’t fast enough in aperture priority then you need to adjust your aperture down or your ISO up. Your pictures all look really light to me so I’m wondering if you were shooting at a high ISO?
RE: Heron 3rd picture
I agree with CISS that your focus was on the shrubbery behind you and not the bird. When I’m shooting something far away in landscape I often wrestle with my auto focus not choosing the subject I want in focus, so I turn it off once I have the general focus down and make adjustments manually. It’s sometimes hard when shooting animals that are in motion but you get a feel for your infinity focus.
RE: Equipment
I’ve never used the Sigma lens you have but as orionid mentioned we do have issues with our 70-300, so it’s possible your lens’ focus is just slightly off. See how it does in a controlled environment with something like the eye chart at an optometrist.
RE: Final thought
For your egret pic I’m just wondering about the time of day and weather conditions as well. Midday photos for me were often washed out in the same way this one is, until I learned to use a circular polarizer, take my EV down -.5 and f/22.

ParticipantMining operations are a necessary part of our global infrastructure, so yes they would be fair game.
As I said before, hard and soft infrastructure is fine. You can shoot telephone poles, highways, columns, beams, airports, trains, sewers, garbage trucks, the Post Office, a bank, a dollar, a Police Officer…
Power plants, where airplanes fly
O’oer power lines across the sky
A dump truck dumping precious ore
The joists that hold up your house floor
A nickel, penney, piece ‘o eight
A subway running very late
The asphalt underneath your feet
The farms where we get all our meat
The prison system breaking rocks
I’m sure you’ll think out of the boxKestrana
ParticipantI think I’m honestly more bothered by the terrible spelling, grammar and punctuation on his website than the photography. It’s trashy – just like his subject matter.

Participantlokisbong: BLM land in and of itself isn’t really infrastructure since they’re the caretakers for all the government owned “empty” land. If the land is actually being used to support human civilization somehow (watershed land, federal prison system, abandoned mine shaft field – historic infrastructure – or a wind farm, etc) then it’s fine. Fences in and of themselves aren’t infrastructure but if they’re connected to something that is (a prison fence, a fence around a power station, highway medians, etc) then they’re fine.

ParticipantLove it! I like that some of our departed Farktographers still compete in the overall category giving us a true milestone to work against. The only thing that concerns me is the 1.5 entries average. I don’t actually think this applies to any user right now but I could forsee someone becoming a regular but only entering one photo each week. Don’t know that I would change your statistics but something to keep in mind/watch for.
