Hah. I was indeed stopped and questioned for taking pics of our Police Dept. from the sidewalk.

I saw an employee pull the shades back from one of the windows and stare at me. A few minutes later, a cruiser pulled to an abrupt stop at the curb next to me to ask what I was doing.

It turned out amiably, though. He asked for ID, I told him I didn’t have any with me, and was just taking pictures of government buildings on a sunny summer day. He accepted that and told me to have a good day.

I hope the weather clears up in time for me to jump in for this one.

I’m really interested in how our tiny mountain town policemen are going to react to me showing up with a tripod and camera outside of our new police station.

I know several of them are curious about the camera bag they see over my shoulder whenever I go walking, and I’ve spoken to the police chief about being hassled over photography by citizens in the past, but I’ve never stopped to take photos of things Homeland Security said makes photographers terrorists — like public buildings.

One thing you can do is look at the Hoppered Themes (look in the Themes forum) so you can be shooting for any of those when you are out and about. If I see something that relates to a hoppered contest, I’ll shoot it, even if it hasn’t been scheduled yet. That way I’m not in the position you’re in.

Ah! That’s helpful (I saw the topic area, but figured I’d let people who’ve done this longer than I have figure that kind of thing out…). I see how that works, now.

It’s especially helpful since the Tools theme isn’t really dependent on weather conditions, and our forecast actually has the rain ending for the next week…. And I have my first non-cheap-disposable lens arriving in a couple of days.

*sigh* — We’ve had nothing but rain since this one was announced. I have one in-camera HDR I took just to test it on the new camera. I’ll post to it to up the numbers 🙂

Same with the 2-wheelers last week (Grats Pope, loved the shot) — About the only two-wheelers I saw in all the rain was trash bins, and I didn’t think that would add much.

I was gonna got nuthin, but I felt bad there were only 14 entries, so I found a couple things lying around the house. (I do most of my pics outdoors, have no space/lighting/knowledge for studio-style shooting.)

Things like that one, especially, kill me.

People erect signs and art on their property to garner attention and make people look, then get defensive when you take a picture of it.

I’ve had a few grumpy encounters over taking shots of those kinds of displays — although some folks are really happy I noticed the effort they’ve put into it.

After looking around the last week or two, I’m convinced the color blue was at some point in history outlawed in my county.

I *do* in fact walk around playgrounds with a giant lens (well, not *giant* but 300mm by default), but that’s after asking the school — I got into photography about two years ago while researching migratory bird habitats, and the local elementary school has a nest, as do the police and fire departments, and I share the photos with officials for educational/conservation use. Officials in town know me as “the bird guy” and always wave when they see me.

The death threat came when I was sitting on my porch cleaning my camera. I took a couple of long, small-aperture shots at the sky just to find any dust spots on the sensor, then would blow off that area and do it again. A guy down the street started screaming for the next two hours that I’d taken pictures of his grand-daughter, and eventually yelled at his neighbor that he was going to beat me to death. Then he came over to my yard (but not in it) and said he was going to shoot me. That’s when I called the cops, and told them I could show them the serial-numbered shots on my camera that show I haven’t taken any pictures of anyone. The cops, as I mentioned, love me, and opened a case file on the meat-head when he refused to settle down.

I live in a little mountain town of about 8,000 to the east of Portland. It’s pretty rednecky, but I was just curious if other hobbyists have to deal with this.

(Heh. I had a rabbit that qualified, too, but I think I’ll just pass that one by…)

Technically, the description just says they have to be taken during the golden hour, not that they have to be golden (though the title suggests it). I think you’d be in the letter of the law posting anything from that general time period, though it might not do as well with voters as photos that are more golden. Of course, voters have surprised me before, so who knows!

Good, that. I just came here to ask the same thing.

I live in a forest in a valley, and all my Fark shots are taken on my walks and hikes in the area. We get long shadows, blues and reds at sunset on every horizon, but looking for the last couple of weeks, I found no effects from our sunset/sunrise time that looked anything like the sample pic in this thread.

Is it me or has the contest not posted

It’s on TF. It goes live in a couple of hours. See Elsinore’s link or the Contest Tab.

Also also wik, that is an impressive collection of Bible tracts!

I’ve collected them since I was in college. It became easier in the 90s when I was contracting for BP Exploration — someone there knew I was a heretic and would leave the Jack Chick tracts in my desk drawers for me to find. We never learned the identity of my benefactor.

Since this seems the place where people mention such things, I have an extraneous blank entry that needs tossed.

(Oddly, Fark threw away the image *after* I successfully previewed — I don’t know why, I just saw a blip of red text go by when I hit “post” from the preview screen.)
