I could have done better by not even entering my photos at all 🙂

Ive had plenty of those types of weeks. Im kinda surprised by the low turnout rate this week, despite all the trouble we had coming up with whats allowed and what isnt I thought this would be a common enough theme for lots of people to join in.

I obviously haven’t been around enough lately to participate or even help

Well there is an easy way to fix that.

One group of contests that I’d vote for including would be the sort of random objects contests such as forks, apples vs oranges, barbie and ken, staplers, and maybe the dollar store contest because these contests tended to capture the fun/silly side of farktography and always had some really creative entries.(These could probably be included in the It’s not photography…: Silliness and farkisms section or in its own section if that section is getting too big)

Also from a historical perspective we should definitely include look to the skies in the world around us section since that was the first really big contest and still sits in second for most votes ever(although it may be difficult to get a top 5 from this contest anymore since a lot of the links are dead so we’d be hoping that we’re able to get in contact with people from this contest and that they still remember what they entered).

Which of these would fit the theme?

When this theme was originally suggested I had some picture that I thought would be perfect for this, and of course I can’t remember anything about it now other than being fairly certain that none of these is it.

Doing something like the Indy book might work where we could try to fit groups of contests into broad themes. One section could be something with animals(we’ve done that general theme plenty of times and have a lot to choose from there). Maybe a high manipulation theme for stuff like hdr, stitching, tilt-shift and the hootenany, maybe holga too since I would guess most the people made their holga images digitally. And then we could add commentary for these sections, so with the software section we could talk about something like the ongoing debates on how much manipulation is allowed.

Is there a reason for only looking at one year, I had been assuming we would include photos from throughout each year and would be trying to chase down some of the past farktographers to include them(and maybe sucker some of them into coming back).

Did you point out to them that they should be nice to you because you just stole part of their soul by taking a photo of them and that you could do whatever you wanted to it.

I like the idea of doing the top 5 or 10 pictures from each contest, but I’m not sure how doable that idea would be. Top 10 would put us close to 3000 pictures depending on when we make the cutoff date for the book(250 or waiting for 300 seems like easy choices). A book this size would probably get really expensive and scare the publisher. Also we would run into problems with people not wanting to be in the book and not being able to track people down so we would either have a lot of contests with fewer photos or just go with the top 5 or 10 photos per contest of people that want to be in the book.

The other way I could see doing this is just say everyone that wants in the book gets in. Then we would have to decide if everyone gets the same number of entries or do we set the number of entries by something like vote totals or averages(or maybe come up with some formula that screws over everyone). As for picking photos we could let each person pick their own, have a committee to pick photos, or let people vote on which photos are used for each person(maybe letting the farktographer narrow the pool down to 10 or so photos before voting so everyone doesnt have to dig through everyones fsm profiles), although this last idea may be tough to get participation for everyones entries if 200 people decide they want to be in the book.

BTW I still have the Farkholga. thepostess never got back to me, so is anyone else interested in using it?

I am, actually, but that raises problems of shipping it overseas…
    I guess that’s out?

It depends on how heavy it is, when we did the pass the farkamera thing with a disposable I was able to ship it to Europe for about $5.
