I’m fine with any interpretation of the rules. So if selective multiple exposures (some areas partially transparent and some completely transparent) are overkill then I’ll skip posting the ones I did that way. I just got the impression that combining photos was OK for this . If someone can clarify before the contest goes live that would be great.

We discussed this earlier and it’s ok.

It’s basically anything goes software and manipulation wise. As long as you took all elements of the photos.

If the goal of this is to get as many farktographers would it be easier to just let anyone who wants to be in the book get have some of their best entries in rather than trying to do the top 10 or 20 each week and then trying to track down all the people that just competed a couple of times and have left or leave holes in the top 10/20. Maybe do something like base the number of photos in the book off of total votes so that the people with the most good entries are able to show off a little bit more of their work.

We could do that too. Let anyone who wants their photos considered submit them somehow. Either to a flickr group that we make or right here to this site.

Also I totally understand the desire to get as many people incorporated in the book as possible but I really think that 400 pages is too expensive for the larger market, and trying to cram 5 or 6 pictures on a page is going to take away from the pictures. Prices for books larger than 10×8 go up exponentially, and 10×8 is the size of a regular sheet of paper. If we put more than 4 pictures on a page, each one winds up being about 2×3, and then you need to add the text of the picture’s name and photographer and any other information we want to attach to them.

However, if you’re going to talk to Drew about it, maybe he can work some magic Fark powers to get us a deal that would allow for more pages at a cheaper price – and if we order more than 15 or so copies, there’s a discount as well.

I guess it really comes down to a question of priorities. Is it more important to have huge farktographer inclusion? To create a professional and polished looking product? To be able to price the product competitively in the market, so that people outside of the artists may want to buy it and be exposed to some of the great talent and love of photography it embodies (and the poor working stiffs who participate here can afford it too 😉 )? If all three of these are equally important we probably need assistance from a publisher to make it happen because combining the first 2 priorities inevitably inflates the third.

I’m thinking that if Drew gets a publisher involved we may run into some resistance from contributors over use of photos. If any money made off this is going to charity I will not have any issues with use of my photos. However if soemone is looking to make a buck off this then that is a different story. I’m sure most probably feel this way.

Maybe the best thing is to discuss it with Drew and see what he thinks. If a publisher is going to get involved then they most likely will do all the legwork.

If he doesn’t want to get involved but gives his blessing for us. Then I think we just shoot for publishing a sort of yearbook of Farktography, available to all contributors and anyone else who loves our photos, but sold through an online publisher like Blurb at cost.

Remember, most high school yearbooks cost around 100 bucks. So putting a Farktography yearbook together we can expect it to cost about the same.

Would something like this be allowed

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/guine/4007281662/
Or is adding the text taking it too far?

I think the text is taking it too far. You allow that, and it’s basically an Illustrator contest and we’ve got swallows and pigeons and geegaws and gimcracks, and I’m not up for all that crap.

Damn I was so hoping for gimcracks 🙁

It’s my favorite kind of cracks ya know?

That’s a good point on removing photos. Just looking for ways to include as many people as possible…

If you’re going to play with blurb, I’ll see if I can’t get Kat involved, and between us figure out how many photos we’re dealing with.

I sent my quick dirty mockup to the email addy in your profile.

If thats not the correct one let me know where to send it.
You can import it into the Blurb software.

One thing I found off the bat is that some photos we will need larger sizes from the photographer.

Also, before we get too deep into this someone should get Drews blessing.

Although reading back over the OP it does state no adding elements to the photo that were not in the original photo. So you may be pushing the limits there.

I say it’s ok, as this is not like a PS contest because you have to go out and shoot your own stuff.

    Soosh, its your theme so?

Yeah, “original photo” is key here. If we’re allowing HDR, you’re already allowing stacked exposures, so the original photo is actually several or many photos. I can definitely see an argument for allowing elements from any or all of those exposures to be incorporated into your final image as long as they were part of the series you shot; this happens with HDR anyway. But I would love for soosh to give a more official opinion on this one.

Also, I think the description as worded would probably allow stitched panoramas, too, but I want to be sure.

We may clarify the wording a bit if need be, depending on what’s decided on these questions.

    I’m all for anything goes.

/not that I have even started on this yet. 😕

That sounds very similar to HDR to me, and as such I would think that would fly.

Now here’s a question: What about composites of the same scene stacked similarly to an HDR, but where subjects may be in different places in the scene creating duplicates of the subject? It’s something that can happen with HDR (ghosting of cars moving in a scene, etc), but it can be taken advantage of by stacking exposures a la HDR and even erasing through the layers to bring those those subjects out more. On the one hand, we’ve already said you can’t add in (unrelated?) subjects, but in this case, they’re part of a series of exposures of the same scene, and that can happen with the HDR exemption we’re already allowing. How/Where do we draw the line?

I think the point was not to have any lines.

As long as you took all the photos you can do anything you want to them.

In other words. No putting Abe Lincoln in your picture. (Unless you took the photo of Abe)

Anything else is fair game for this contest.

I agree that we should have more than just the top ten. I’d like to include as many entries as possible and still have the book at a reasonable cost – this is eating into my lens budget you know 😉

Another idea might be to have a roughly fixed number of photos per contest? That might get us closer to a ‘fixed’ book size and allow a lot of entries. Or, come up with some weighted variable where the bigger contests get more pages versus the smaller ones.

I think top 20 works plus maybe 1-4 editors choice. Going back over the past few weeks I see that going top 20 will be between 20- 23 photos (ties).

Top ten would be ideal but then I am afraid it would be the U-man, Soosh, Elsinore book. (not that that wouldn’t be an awesome book);)

I’m not too keen on the idea of removing photos because someone will appear twice or three times. I mean, that’s the way the voters chose them that the way they should stay. I’m thinking of U-mans top three week, would you really want to pull any of those out?

I am going to play with the Blurb book maker software and make a dirty mock up of one chapter to see how it may look. I will email it to anyone who wants to download the software and look at it, add to it, bitch about it, or whatever.

All this “top ten” talk makes my pics a lot less likely to be in the book. I don’t think I have ever gotten above 15th place to date but I can’t wait to see the book either way.

Thats why I suggested top 20. Most of the regular participants have hit the top 20.

Also I had suggested an honorable mentions list because there are also many good shots that get submitted too late to catch up with the votes.

Some additional thoughts: If we can’t contact the farktographer, we can’t use the image, plain and simple. I believe that Drew would have the right to use any of our images for promotion of Fark, because we had to agree to that when we signed up. Us mere mortals on the other hand…

To add to that legal mess, some of the shots are sure to require permission from the subjects, but that’s something we should ask the Farktographer to take care of, but it’ll have to be dealt with on a case-by-case basis anyhow.

We definitely need permission from the photographer.

As for the human subjects,I believe this would fall under non commercial fine art. Model releases would be a good idea but I am not really sure we need them.

we all have ups and downs (well, except maybe U-Man and Elisinore 😉 ).

lol well thanks for that 😉 Though if you look at my participation graph, you’ll see I have a lot of downs for the ups I have, and a lot of times where I’ll have one photo do decent, but the other two tank. I’m honestly not all that consistent, but I appreciate your vote of confidence and comparison to the guy who’s on top of all the stats 😉

Well deserved congrats (and a very happy birthday!) to millera9 this week. Man, to be 26 again…le sigh… 😉

Ok, here is what I am thinking.

We make it a Farktography 2009 book. Use only photos from 2009. This will make getting permission from photographers much easier than trying to track down people from 2-3 years ago.

    53 Chapters of photos
Each chapter is 1 weeks contest, starting with Money Shots.
1st page of chapter is the #1 photo.
    2nd page has 2&3 photo.
    3rd page 4 5 6
    4th page 7 -10
    5th page 11-15
    6th page 16-20
7th 4 honorable mentions voted on by a committee that we form of regulars to this forum (volunteer)
Obviously we would have to adjust page layout for ties and such.

Chapter 53 can be devoted to the best 10 photos of the year.Everyone who is interested can post their 3 best non top 20 shots from the year. We can post a Fark thread the last couple days of the year to vote on these.
54th chapter will be photo credits.
Playing with the Blurb bookmaker software this is a possible layout.
10×8 layout. Softcover will be about 75 bucks.
Trying our best to keep it under 400 pages.

    anybody got any other ideas?
