I’ve been shooting RAW + jpegs for a while. It’s probably time to kill the jpegs the camera takes – I never use them anyway :/

Oh, and FWIW, the last ‘big’ wedding I went to, I took 300+ pictures. Generally I run around 75-100 for an average day out.

I’ll second that. The LCD in my P&S is busted and needs to be replaced, but I managed to get (for free) an old PowerShot G5 for my kid. If he keeps this up he’s going to need a real camera soon :/

    Not bad for a ten-year-old. http://65.78.140.207/gallery2/main.php/v/anton/searanch08/

So, the ‘making the switch’ thread has had me thinking…

just kat and I have between us thousands of pictures and now that my son has expressed an interest in coming along with us on photo safaris, I expect this number to grow exponentially. Right now, we’ve got a samba share on the server that has everything organized by date – folders for the year and then yymmdd format within that with additional folder name tags such as ‘farktography-contest’ or ‘Christmas’ or what have you, and the person’s initial. Even still, this is getting really, really unruly, and difficult to deal with – there’s 22 folders for December alone :/ I’m coming to the realization that what we need around here is some sort of digital/photo management software to keep everything straight, and to be able to actually find that picture I know I took of XXX back in ’05…

What are people using for photo management nowadays? I’ve spent the afternoon looking around on the web, and have been having a helluva time finding anything that really fits where we are – ‘serious hobbyists’ if you will – without getting into the pro level software. And what with everything else going on right now I can’t fork out a couple of hundred bucks to get three seats of anything up and running. Is there anything out there open source that would preferably run on both Win and Linux systems? I looked at Bluemarine (http://bluemarine.tidalwave.it/) and it seems nice on the surface, but is crap for it’s RAW handling abilities at the moment, and I’d really rather not convert everything to TIFF to be able to use it’s features for the foreseeable future.

tl;dr: What are folks using for image management software these days? open source, win+gnome and tagging preferred.

I am most definitely going to try to take a ton of pictures and learn every thing I can about this camera and photography in general.I guess I’m gonna go broke buying more lenses. But I can think of much worse ways to go broke.

All I’ll say, is this……Choose your lenses wisely….Look at Sigma, Tamron & other off the wall names…You need not go with Canon glass to get the results you’re looking for.

    /Just sayin’.
    //Trust me. 8)

Although, if you gotta buy one….

I’ve had more fun with this lens lately than anything else I think.

For Next years do I have to spell out Fark in Christmas lights or something? …

Its not Christmas, its fark.com 😛

Next year I think I’m going to have to spell out ‘Fark’ on my cat.

Or maybe my Kat, but I’ve noticed that borderline NSFW pics don’t tend to do so well…

Yah! Top 5 … Of course it may be only due to the limited number of entries.. But I will take my high ranking, and use it for comfort on cold lonely nights…

Hush you. I’m trying to revel in the fact that I’ve got a better finish in the works than the one I got for the ‘Inept’ contest 😉

Which was my first top-ten evar…

Did fark turn off the ability to vote for yourself?

    /zero votes makes me frownie.
//Always votewhore myself for one vote just to make sure I get FSM credit.

Not that I’m aware of, unless it’s something new that no one told me about :/

But you’ll get at least one Friday or Sat morning when I do mine.

On my Macro tent that I got from B&H, there are two top bars in back, with the lower one being used with two clips on each side to hold the backdrop. Then there is a matching hole in the tent, so that I can reach in from outside and mess with the top of the backdrop.

That’s a very cool thing. I like the idea of a second bar in the back. Thanks 🙂
/I’d consider buying that one but I want a 5-in-1 type sun reflector (If I don’t get one for Christmas (hints to the wife)) and I know I can’t make that :/

This is our home-built rig (the cats have apparently been on the table again…)

    http://65.78.140.207/TF/mypics/lightbox_rig.jpg

I’ts pretty simple but it seems to work well.

does that knock down or is it fixed/glued together? darned good idea with the diffusers.

It’s not designed to knock down but it could be taken apart. If I make a Mark II I’ll make it so that it can be folded or disassembled into chunks. I also want to explore better ways to affix the backdrops.

yeah.. hoping I get one for christmas.. If not, I will build one like that. SHop lights seem to work for a lot of people. Especially if you have a Good diffuser.

I recommend it. I’m amazed by how often I use the thing now that we have it.

even shop lights though I suspect that might be a little too bright.

They work ok if you bounce them off enough walls/ceilings. My paintbrushes pic in this contest was taken in an unfinished bathroom with a big ass halogen pointed up at a wall, and the small flash on my camera.

That can certainly take some doing :/

    I really need a lightbox!

just kat built ours with PVC tubing and the diamond pattern stuff that one uses to cover flourescent lighting. works really well.

I’ve got an incandescent light kit that we move ’round for lighting the thing, but I’ve also seen where people are using all manner of lights – even shop lights though I suspect that might be a little too bright.
