ParticipantOrionid – I definitely want to see hers included as well. If it’s okay with her mom, I can send you info on how to break the password on a Windows computer (It’s not that difficult – we had to do that here at work a few months back, but you need physical access to the machine).
Kestrana I was planning on doing a full list by contest, so we don’t have to go through them all a second or third time. Basically, for the top 20 in each contest, # of photos, Fark handles, and some sort of picture identifier if that’s possible. If I assemble it into a spreadsheet mining the data shouldn’t be all that difficult.

ParticipantIt’s my favorite kind of cracks ya know?
Crack is whack you know.

ParticipantI think #1 and #3 are what I’d shoot for finding a balance for. I mean, this is Farktography after all 😉
But, the more I think about it, the more I agree that someone’s got to talk to Drew about it. It does have the Fark name attached to it, and he owns that. We should probably have a solid plan before we do though.
I haven’t started the picture count yet, but hope to get cracking on that by tomorrow – I need to get my shots in order for this week still – priorities, right? I think that once I have those numbers compiled we’ll have a better idea on how we want to move forward.

Participantsweet. No idea if I have anything good, but I’ve got stuff to post at least.

ParticipantGot it, thanks 🙂
A thought on the larger sizes – do we want to try and get copies of the pics without watermarks at the same time? Get together the full list of shots that are going in, and send one email to each Farktographer asking for clean copies of some rough size – say, 1500px wide or so?

ParticipantThat’s a good point on removing photos. Just looking for ways to include as many people as possible…
If you’re going to play with blurb, I’ll see if I can’t get Kat involved, and between us figure out how many photos we’re dealing with.

ParticipantI agree that we should have more than just the top ten. I’d like to include as many entries as possible and still have the book at a reasonable cost – this is eating into my lens budget you know 😉
Another idea might be to have a roughly fixed number of photos per contest? That might get us closer to a ‘fixed’ book size and allow a lot of entries. Or, come up with some weighted variable where the bigger contests get more pages versus the smaller ones.

Participant‘mofo, I think you should get the final satisfaction of getting the camera back, smashing it to bits, and posting the results in the upcoming ‘destroyed’ contest.

ParticipantAs for the human subjects,I believe this would fall under non commercial fine art. Model releases would be a good idea but I am not really sure we need them.
Not a laywer and don’t play one on TV
I’m not a lawyer either, by any stretch of the imagination. But, I’ve been reading enough about this crud in the past few days to make my head hurt, and I’ll probably need to re-read a lot of it before I can fully digest it. But the gist is, it would be a good idea to have the Farktographer get permission from anyone they’ve taken pictures of in a private, or intimate setting. In most cases it’s no big deal (no pun intended. well, maybe just a little) but in some cases, like QueenBee’s excellent shots of her nephew, it’d be in our (and her) best interests if she made sure it was okay with the kid’s parents.

ParticipantAs a thought: I like the idea of top 20 (or top 15) because it’ll include more Farktographers. Maybe we want to vet the images some, rather than reduce the number of places? For one glaring example, in Dragons I tied with myself for 3rd place, but I see no reason to put both pics in the book, especially since they’re very similar. Another thing that could be done would be to take only the best placing pic from any Farktographer in any given contest. So, if I got a 5th and an 11th place, only the 5th place one would be used.
Probably the best thing to do though, is to start culling through FSM and start getting an idea of how many pictures we’re dealing with (to date).
/Schnee, is there any way you could give us a rough count for the year? # images in the top ten, 15, and 20?olavf
ParticipantSome additional thoughts: If we can’t contact the farktographer, we can’t use the image, plain and simple. I believe that Drew would have the right to use any of our images for promotion of Fark, because we had to agree to that when we signed up. Us mere mortals on the other hand…
To add to that legal mess, some of the shots are sure to require permission from the subjects, but that’s something we should ask the Farktographer to take care of, but it’ll have to be dealt with on a case-by-case basis anyhow.

ParticipantOne of mine I’ll probably link the original, because the before/after is pretty dramatic. One of them will probably be multiple exposures, so I think it’d bog down the post.
Which brings me to a question:
I have an image that’s a combination of two exposures of the same subject(s), but taken at different levels. I stacked the images, but rather than adjusting the transparency of the layer, I made most of that layer transparent (kind of a reverse of what we did for ‘colour popping’. Is that kosher? I can link the shot in question if need be.

ParticipantI like where this thread is going.
Hmmm…

ParticipantTo be 36 again…
You can have my #36 if you like. It’s been a longer year in some aspects that my #30.
And I got divorced in #30.

ParticipantI like it NBD. We’re going to have to address the multi-shot contests at some point (like Training Documents) but overall it seems pretty sound. @top-20 it should be pretty inclusive of most of the regulars too.
And, if it comes off well, we could make it a regular thing.
