The B&W of the little boy in a cape (which is doing OK in the voting) in my opinion is a power, moving photograph but I know the backstory on it.

FWIW, I think it’s the best photo in the thread, myself.

I guess I could have vote whored that shot with the backstory, but I didn’t think it needed it.

    It doesn’t…

His shutter mechanism is completely electronic, and the cord/wiring for it is long since gone. I’m also not sure the wiring innards are intact, and the back is hosed (no ground glass and missing parts on the Graflock).

Oh, too bad. But if the back is at least mostly intact you might be able to make him shootable if you could get a matched pair of lenses in shutter and mounted them on the existing lensboards…. (a ground glass for the back shouldn’t be needed if the top one works)

Too bad Hagrid doesn’t work for anything but TtV

Why not? It doesn’t look like there’s a whole lot that could go wrong with him…

Well I’m not sure exactly what constitutes “artistic”

“Something that is intended by the creator to produce an emotional response in the audience.” (Seems like as good a definition as any….)

As far as camera porn, I don’t have a white sheet big enough for the “studio shot,”

I usually use a 20×30 sheet of foamcore.

The reason for the odd name is that the unsharp mask filter is based on an actual darkroom printing technique that was used sometimes to boost edge contrast (and apparent sharpness) using a slightly out of focus positive image superimposed on an in focus negative.

In Photoshop try starting from something like Amount = 150, Radius = 0.8 Threshold = 4. The defaults are something awful that give people a bad idea about how useful it is…

I think the answer on MF vs digital really depends on what you’re doing with the film after processing. Theoretically, the quality of a decent MF transparency or negative should be up in the 30-40 megapixel range, but I definitely can’t get that sort of detail with my scanner. And professional drum scanning is horribly expensive…

    Well, thanks!

That reminds me, I cropped it square:

and I think that helps reduce the sense of it being held in the corner of the frame…

Basically, technology is progressing to the point that it removes the necessity of knowledge or talent from the creative process.

It really isn’t. Mostly this stuff just allows people to take bad photos and make them worse…

So, 154lbs worth means how many actual putters? They can’t weigh much more than a couple of lbs I wouldn’t think?

Yup, but you’ll still see a few votes sneak in sometimes if you look.

There are zero votes until the contest goes live.

Actually I’m pretty sure it’s possible to vote in the period between the thread being posted and it going green, but usually there aren’t many.

I’m still finding it difficult to get photographs versus snapshots. So I’m asking for advice/help in what I can do, how I can approach this to become a better photographer.

My take on snapshots vs photographs, FWIW:

A snapshot is, at least in many cases, basically a prompt for your memory of a scene, event, etc. You look at it, and it evokes the feelings you had when you were wherever you were, doing whatever you were doing.

But mostly, no one else is going to look at that snapshot and feel the same things (well, except if the snapshot happens to be of something other people find incredibly cool).

So, basically you want to ruthlessly crush (or at least temporarily set aside 😉 those memory-based associations and look at what you’ve shot purely in terms of how it works as an image. Identify what you’re doing wrong, and work on fixing it.

I find it helpful sometimes to practice things technique or composition-wise in fairly familiar surroundings (I have several places locally that I go to) rather than out exploring, because there’s no real pressure to get actual photos of everything when you already have a bunch already and it’s easy enough to come back in a day or two.
