ParticipantI got one done. The sassy one. While it is safe for work, it made my wife smile and say, “what the hell is the matter with you?” So I have a sense of accomplishment there.
It required a snowman and the snow is really dry. Not good for packing. So, in the interest of high art, *ahem* I changed the character of the snow.

Bringning a wheelbarrow of snow in the house probably started the whole “what the hell is wrong with you” thoughts in my wife’s head.
I wonder if it is a good thing or a bad thing for my children seeing their father do stuff like this. Probably good. 🙂
Oh, btw, I did the pic after the kids went to bed.
definitely good. My wife and one of my kids came to pick me up from work the other day, and I came out of the office with a 12-foot mahogany 1×4 I’d bought a few days earlier. My son’s comment was “you are so random. I’m glad I don’t have a boring dad.”

Participantwhen you save, do a “save as” and there should be a slider that will allow you to adjust the compression and shrink the file size without shrinking the image physically. also, 2×3 inches doesn’t really mean anything for posting on the internet. what was the pixel size you were trying to save at?

ParticipantHey soosh, is your snowstorm picture black and white/grayscale? Usually your night time shots have colored light sources like sodium lights and whatnot, but that looks monotone?
nope, it’s not grayscale or black and white. it wasn’t a sodium light, but a more greenish-white halogen or something, and I set the white balance in camera to offset it and make it all white and then over-exposed the hell out of it. it was close enough to white, unlike the sodium lights, that correction back was possible.
if you look closely at the trees, you can see a little green. I actually bumped the saturation up a notch, but it was a heavy foggy snowstorm at 1200′ elevation.

ParticipantI went back tonight with my son to try and retrieve the toy from the tree, but the 1×4 I had wasn’t long enough.

ParticipantNeat. Did the dog hit the tripod on IMG_5671, or did you?
the dog did.

Participantmy plans this winter involve using a fishing pole and some steel leader to cast burning magnesium into crevices in the face of the glacier that I’m not willing to brave on foot.`
I use a small blowtorch to light the magnesium, so I don’t have to worry about wind. well, ok, it’s not my smallest blowtorch, but it’ll fit in the backpack.
i was out once in 60mph winds on the beach lighting some off. I was surprised the coast guard didn’t show up.
