ParticipantIt was kinda wierd last night. I drove over to the fairgrounds expecting them to be locked up tight. I found the place wide open. I don’t think they even have a gate. The whole thing covers several acres and I drove/walked around for about 45 minutes. It was mildly creepy. I elected to use the SWINE & SHEEP pic because it is sort of odd to have a building with that sign. 🙂
I also saw this one –

I thought about posting the Photography building and then having a link with something like, “And here is where the Farktographers show off their stuff”. Then link to the Swine & Sheep building.

ParticipantSee, I told you that lots of you guys know more. But I consider ‘mofo more of a shaman.

ParticipantBy the way – I take some nice photos. I like them. I get votes. However, I know that I’m not some hot-shot, know-it-all photography guru. 🙂 Lots of you guys know way more about this stuff than I do. Some of you are just starting out. I’m just into it and I really enjoy this farktography community.

ParticipantThanks for the nice comments guys. Like soosh said, I try to find a subject that is interesting and/or unusual. I’ll bet that he does this too – but I actively look for stuff that to the casual observer would be considered insignificant or ugly. If looked at in a different light or from a different angle (both figurative and literal) this stuff is frequently really cool. I’ve said it before, but I really like my perspective of the world when I look through a camera. It forces me to stop and look and actually see the beauty in the world rather than just filter it out as I go about my busy day.
What makes something wierd click in my head and then turn out as a nice photo? Hell, I don’t know. I do know that frequently the pics I get out of my camera don’t match the cool one in my head. Lots of the crap I photograph just turns out as a crappy pic. 🙂 One of the reasons I love digital is that I’ll take bunches of pics of any given subject from all sorts of angles. Sometimes the odd angle turns out well. Sometimes it looks to me like I’m trying too hard to get a funny angle.
I’ve had a theme idea bouncing around in my head for a while now. I tried to capture it with the “Simple Beautiful” theme ( http://farktography.net/index.php?module=Photoshare&func=showimages&fid=141 ). That didn’t quite get it though. This discussion caused it to crystalize.
Theme – “Ugly….but has a great personality”
Description – Show us interesting photos of something that many would consider ugly.
Difficulty – While the incidental human is OK, people cannot be the subject of the photo.U-Man
ParticipantI was stopped by one of the security guards and told I could not take picutes inside the mall.
While I generally don’t like to piss off people in uniform, it’s my understranding that that is a bunch of crap. You have a right to take photgraphs in most public places. Not so much if you are trespassing.
Cue the letter about this from that photographer dude in 3…2…1…
/at work. can’t find it. help me out here.

ParticipantI’ve gotta get some friends. Stuff like this keeps coming up.
If you get a picture of a stapler on a pony ride I’ll mail you $10. $5 for something easier like one of those swings on chains that go around in circles.

ParticipantI had very similar problems when I was holding the front my lens steady with one hand, the camera with another, and focusing with another.
I have nothing technical to add. I just came here to say that I love the way you write. 🙂

ParticipantNot to offend anyone but we seem to have gotten a lot of not so technically great shots of some really cool collections this week.
Oh well I guess that’s farktography!
I agree. I found it difficult to frame a technically good shot of a bunch of stuff. I did this one and discarded it because I got the utility pole late and used that instead. As I was saying goodnight to the kids Tuesday night I noticed all of the creations they had made. As you can see, I was unable to get a pleasing photo (for anybody except me and the Mrs. and maybe the grandparents).

ParticipantOh yeah. I thought about doing a pic of ALL of my wife’s shoes but the 10-22 wasn’t wide enough.
Ba-dum, tsshhh. Tip your waitress.

ParticipantWith that calculator pic included, I wouldn’t worry so much about the shoes. 🙂
At least the one pair has flames on ’em.

ParticipantWell no, of course not. There are other contests that include things that don’t occur where I live, and I’m cool with that. It won’t be the first time I go outside the box a bit.
Yeah, but you have cool abandoned mines. No contest between a fair and an old mining building. 🙂
/Mountains and icebergs and sea lions and polar bears and Northern lights fall into the cool category as well.

ParticipantU-Man: Think schnee will need to troubleshoot your neon entries. Did Mopsy‘s entries make it over?
Yeah, Mopsy’s made it to the FSM. You restored hers several hours before mine. She must have just made it.

ParticipantHey Stag, I neglected to take the summer fair photo opportunities. 🙁 You seem to be keeping the definition of fair pretty narrow and I have nothing that fits. While it wouldn’t kill me to sit out a week, I wonder if there are others in the same situation.
Again, I don’t really care how this one works out. But I ask you to consider opening it up a bit. Empty fairgrounds would be do-able any time of the year. What about theme-parks?

ParticipantWorking on three hours of sleep Monday night, I finally got interested in this one last night at 9. I did two sort of hokie ones with stuff around the house and found a decent old one with some photographic merit.(thanks for reminding me about that one Mopsy)
I had an idea that involved a short drive and I was actually in the garage with my camera and tripod at 1130 last night when reason reared its ugly head. I want to bed. Then, while at work today, I remembered another old one I could have used. I also snuck out right after lunch and tooks some shots of another collection.
Unfortunately, I’m stuck at work until 10 (11 EST) without a card reader or photo editing software. I’ll probably submit two early and one when I get home.

ParticipantI don’t know why but I’m just not into this one. There’s lots of stuff I could shoot – I’m just not feeling the magic.
/7:4 odds I’m shooting some asinine thing later tonight. 🙂
//btw Els (and maybe schnee) my Neon stuff still didn’t make it over to the FSM. Farked? -
