One other thing I neglected to mention above:

Interestingly, the more tubes I put on, the higher the shutter speed, but the more Macro filters, the slower the shutter speed. I’m sure there’s a good reason, having something to do with light versus sensor size versus glass or lack thereof, but I’m not really into optics as a science.

My biggest problem with the iPhone/iPad people isn’t the fact that they’re shooting with them. It’s the people who believe their iDevice is going to turn out pictures as good as my DSLR.

It may be the user not the tool, but I’m still going to have trouble writing a book with a crayon. It can be done, but a pen or pencil will produce better results.

    Cool shots!

If I’m home this year, I fully plan on shooting our local Critereon also. We’ll see if I can get anywhere near the quality you’ve got.

Re: DSLR vs. iPhone/iPad – depends on what people want. If it’s vacation photos (Honey, remember that amazing time we had at the beach?”) vs. wall art, or digital catalog vs. printed magazine, the differences may or may not be important. It all depends on the purpose of the photo. Obviously, I’m way biased towards making even the most mundane photo as artistic and beautiful as possible, but I ain’t (normal) everybody. I can say that having shared some photos with colleagues this year (only the best and only a few) people CAN tell the difference when it matters.

Re: various audio output – due to a congenital moderate “high-pitch hearing loss” (I should wear hearing aids but don’t… it’s the little sounds I don’t miss – they’re bloody annoying!) it takes a really quiet environment and intentional effort to hear much difference at all. I’m sure there is a difference, but mostly for people with better hearing than I. I’m keeping my CDs, but mostly due to the possibility of the mp3 files getting zapped as well as the fact that my car stereo’s still radio/CD only. That, and I haven’t the disc space to rip them all (yet).

Came back today. Seems to be working just fine.

Looking forward to taking a metric butt-load of shots this summer.

Those who’ve been, have any suggestions on good tours for the photographic aspect?

I am interested in this question as well. If the finances hold up we’ll be there this summer, as well.

Last year just over a week.
This year it’s been “in transit” for 4 days. We’re closing in on 2 weeks.

Fortunately, just before I sent it away I got a 4mp Kodak EasyShare w/docking printer from a guy for $1 (you read that correctly). So I’ve been able to hold the DTs at bay, but if it doesn’t get here before this weekend’s road trips, I am going to be one twitching, sad mess.

That was a brainlness typo. I knew it was an FE when I typed it.

I ordered some batteries today. If that’s the problem (and with the reading I’ve been doing, it might be) it should resolve itself in about a week. I’ll keep you updated.

Ah here a photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/awrose/6148879897/ The DOF release is the silver button on the front of the camera, between the lens mount and the battery grip shutter button, and you can kind of see the mirror lockup lever around it with the lever bit pointing up.

I’ll take a look, but that button on the F3 isn’t present on the FE:

I guess I’ll putter around the internets for a while after I finish today’s work.

Possibly… but there’s supposed to be a manual setting. There are no batteries in it currently. So the suggestion is to pop batteries in it to see if that’s it, then if not, take it to a pro. OK.

Somehow, in this town… the home of Kodak… we lost our two best camera shops and are now stuck with a Photo/Video/Audio shop where the emphasis is on the Video/Audio and Photo basically means “We sell cameras, bags, flashes and tripods.”

    Goddamit so much…

    I can deal with that.

Now I can actually use it for “cloud” back-up of my photos. Good.

That and I won’t have to sign up for a 4th account when I hit 200 on this one. (right now I’m Yugoboy97, Yugoboy98 and Yugoboy99).

Well, my wife’s truck has a “normal” socket I can plug the battery charger into, but the truck has to be running. The only time I’m really worried about is the overnight. If I don’t beat up on the battery by staying on a mountaintop and doing 30 minute exposures, the two I’ve got will last the two days I need them to. If I decide to beat up on the batteries, carrying anything extra on this trip is unappetizing. I haven’t done a real hike with a real pack for real distance and time in a long time. I love hiking mountains in the Adirondacks, but until this year, almost all hikes have been one-day jobs where carrying enough fluids were the major issue. Last time I did anything remotely similar was about 30 years ago. I’m going to try to keep it light this time. If I don’t declare this to be the last time I do anything like this, I’ll be looking at more equipment.

I totally understand the rant this thread was based on, however. My personal laptop’s screen has finally quit for good. If it weren’t for the laptop the school gave me, I’d already be at the store picking out a new one. Because I’ve got my laptop plugged into a monitor I had stashed in the attic, and I have this thing I’m using right now for portability, I can afford to be patient and really shop for the best deal. While I really want a tablet-style laptop with touchscreen that lies flat, I figure if I can hold out until near end of summer I can probably pick up a decent back-to-school deal. For the moment, the one I want is about $1K, but it’s got solid state memory, and thus less storage. I’d hate to be desperate right now.

FWIW – does anybody else hate Win8? I tried helping a student with some laptop issues (she didn’t have MSOffice, and I was helping her find Wordpad and explaining what OpenOffice is), and Win8 is really clunky to use, especially if you’re not using a touch screen. Finding anything was a bitch. It’s a case of fixing what ain’t broken to address issues that don’t exist on all platforms. Bleah. I’m hoping there will be a setting where I can make it look like “regular” windows…

OK… late next month we return to the Adirondacks, and each campsite has its own mini-beach, so I don’t have to worry so much about the proverbial cop. If the weather holds out I’ll try both approaches. Last year I think I had too open an f-stop as a 30-minute exposure looked like a day-time shot with really smooth water and stars dotting the sky. Given that we’ll be there 10 days, if the skies cooperate, I’ll be able to practice both kinds.

The one issue is charging battery as we have no power or water. I always feel kinda creepy hanging around the bathroom/shower waiting for the batteries to charge. That’s also the reason I probably won’t be staying on a mountain-top for night shots on my 4+ High Peak Overnight Adventure.*

*I’m planning on climbing all 4 peaks in the Seward Range east of Tupper Lake, and I’m staying overnight. If I do the 4 in one day, Santononi and a couple other High Peaks are near enough for me to give the old college try. With the Marcy hike planned with my niece, I might, if all goes well, knock off 8 or more of 46 High Peaks. I will at least be bagging 6 this summer.
