ParticipantThanx for the input. Gonna keep chasing lenses, then (for now).
Re: the article bender16v linked to… I tried to read it… some of the technical stuff just does not stick to my neurons. But… based on the star trails image and comments towards the end and orionid‘s (I think) star trails pic in the just finished contest… for images of that type, am I better off then doing a bunch of shorter exposures (15-30 seconds) and then trying to merge them as opposed to trying to get the most out of the 30 minutes my camera’s “bulb” setting allows? Or can/should I try to merge several 30 minute shots?
I’d like to make a better showing in 2 years when we astrophotograph again. Dunno if I’ll have the patience/skill to use the 500/1000 to find and shoot Mars, Jupiter or Saturn.

ParticipantSo… this discussion brings out the question: when the finances finally get under control and I start to have serious disposable income available… do I chase a new body or new glass first?
Obviously the goal is Full-Frame and some sort of serious high-end glass (you know, the kind with a grey barrel)… but it’s not like I’m going to be able to go big all at once. There’s still a bathroom to remodel at the very least.

Vote-Whoring 2There’s at least 2 more with 9 that have just been sitting there. I think orionid‘s suggestion needs to be seriously discussed.

ParticipantOne benefit of only posting 2 entries is that when you’re getting your ass handed to you by people with far better stuff, it’s a third less disappointing/crushing.

ParticipantGiven that I live in a desert, will cacti and sagebrush do? Riparian oasii?
MOVE TO WHERE THE TREES ARE! YOU LIVE IN A F***ING DESERT! YOU CAN’T GROW ANYTHING THERE! OOH OOOOAAAAWWW!!

ParticipantNot me. Somebody else. I remember the comment, but it weren’t me.
As for “no more scarlet R’s” I can say that some people have a gift. Elsinore caught one I didn’t know I had done. I definitely used a different file name, because I use “Save For Web” and name each one for the contest it goes with, so the two files had different names, but she figured it out anyway.
While it will end the practice of auto-scanning for them, I think that if/when the image is good enough (and even when it ain’t) most of the time people with better attention to detail than I will be able to figure it out.

ParticipantI left ’em longer than planned and they STILL did not get vote #10
There’s 3 more with 9 votes. We’ll see if any of ’em get the 10th.
Gonna try to save the names of the 9s for future reference.

ParticipantI refuse to join the iPhone hive-mind. I have a cheap-o droid tablet that’s whetted my appetite, and my wife’s definitely one of the collective. Her phone is indispensable to her daily existence… or so it seems.
I’m looking forward to my upgrade this summer to a droid phone. I do hope the Galaxy Note is cheap enough when I’m ready, because I really want one with a large enough screen to be useful.

ParticipantI’m curious (not curious) about the whole telescope attachment thing.
We’ve got a couple really really amateur telescopes just wasting away in the basement. Is there some way that doesn’t require machine-shop precision to get those hooked up? aI don’t know what they’d work out to in millimeters, and I certainly wouldn’t want to use them regularly, but seeing’s how I’m going to have complete inadequacy for Farkstronomy, it might be nice to at least try. It would also have some other applications when I have opportunities to be at altitude (buildings or mountains).

ParticipantDamn. Yesterday I sent the SLR in for tune-up.
Good luck y’all! Looking forward to seeing what you dudes and dudettes come up with next week. I put a couple things together from last summer, but I just know that whatever I throw up is going to get blown off the map by the stuff you guys can come up with.

ParticipantWhere’s the BBQ chicken pizza? The Mexican Pizza? Jerk Chicken? Pesto?
If I want a “normal” pizza, there’s like 4 frozen ones in the basement.
Any Farker/Farktographer that comes to Western New York and visits will be able to enjoy this sort of treat.

ParticipantMe? I’m waiting for the 3D Pizza Printer.
I have one of those. It’s called an oven.
Too much work. Want to be able to type in a pizza, with toppings, cheese and sauce options and have what I requested pop out the other end.
Pizza-by-fax was just never going to be a going concern, but a 3D pizza printer would be the tits.

ParticipantWe currently have 2 worthy themes ready to be axed for want of a single vote. They are a few hours older than their due date, but I’m gonna leave ’em until the end of my work day due to it being Thursday with a potential influx of infrequent visitors.
If I still gotta nix ’em, I’m saving the names for later, if we decide to go back to 9.
