ParticipantReally late to this one with the travel & holiday. Good to see you made it and kept the streak going, Els.
Congrats fluffy on the sweep. Don’t know if you noticed or not, but you grabbed almost 24% of the entire vote (total NVC of 238.96), which reminds me of a few stats that I still need to add (highest entry/contest vote and highest entry/contest NVC). For highest total contest NVC, that puts you solidly in the #2 spot:
UserName Contest Total NVC
millera9 Barbie (and Ken) 248.88
fluffybunny Sleeve-faced 238.96
staplermofo Barbie (and Ken) 206.47
U-Man Sleeve-faced 192.21
evern On The Wagon 182.19
Elsinore Barbie (and Ken) 165.18
U-Man What A Load Of Crop 154.76
soosh Farkstronomy 154.75
Elsinore V-Day 141.91
chakalakasp Power 141.07Note that U-Man grabbed another top ten with this contest also.

ParticipantSee, I wasn’t going to be all snarky and quibble over the concept of mosaic, but since you guys did it for me, I feel better. I’ve been in a very smartass mood of late but didn’t want to inflict it on people I actually like.
I guess I’m the opposite – if I’m snarky and smartass around you, you know that I like you and am comfortable enough to be myself. It’s my wife’s favorite attribute of mine (and if you believe that, I’ve got some swampland in Florida I’d like to tell you about…)

ParticipantI was thinking more of a collage
There’s the key word – collage. Replace “Mosaic” with “Collage” and I think that clears everything up (assuming that’s Kes’ actual intent).
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantWe need Kes to clear this up pretty quickly. The flickr page cited as an example in the original thread is not a mosaic of the same type that ennui’s referencing and has illustrated above. The cited example is merely a grid of similar images (buoys in this case).
While I like mosaic’s like ennui’s example (I wrote an app to generate my own if you remember that thread from a couple of months ago), I don’t think they show well within Fark’s image sizes. Looking at ennui’s example, you can’t really tell what any of the component images are.
The simpler definition of mosaic as used in the cited example also removes the need for additional software.

ParticipantAlso sorry to everyone who could not enter for whatever reason–I promise no more ridifficult theme suggestions 😳
Ah, man, don’t be sorry, I really liked the theme and was looking forward to it; I just put it off until the last couple of weeks and then hit real-life busy-ness. I’ve got about 250 albums that I was really hoping to be able to have some fun with.
I knew the day would come when I would end up not participating one week. Just didn’t think it would happen quite this soon
And I didn’t think I’d be around to see it. 🙁 Well, you gave it a helluva run, that’s for sure.
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantYes, but, and this is important, did you actually de-seed any cannabis on it? 😀
Well, when you get a positive answer to that side of the equation, I’ve got a copy of Cheech & Chong’s Big Bambu with the album-sized rolling paper still intact…

ParticipantBreast cancer (not mine), school projects, end of school, roof needing replacement due to hail…
If you gave someone breast cancer and manipulated the weather to make it hail, you should apologize! That’s terrible behavior! Otherwise (and I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt here and assuming this is the case ;)), I think we all understand how life manages to get in the way of play, so no apology necessary. (I feel bad even making that joke, so seriously, best wishes for your friend with the cancer.)
Is it too late to postpone this one again and maybe just do an open contest? I really wanted to do this one, but I’m in the same boat as apparently many others here…

ParticipantWow did y’all get some incredible shots!
As I previously mentioned, I’m currently in San Diego since last Friday. I come out here periodically on business, but this time my wife came with me for the weekend and it’s the first time I’ve had a chance to actually sightsee here. Yesterday was really overcast so I assumed I’d miss the eclipse and actually forgot about it. We literally didn’t see much of the sun all day long, but while we were hiking in Torrey Pines, right about eclipse time, the clouds thinned just enough to actually view the eclipse with the naked eye and unfiltered camera! Unfortunately, all I had with me was my Canon G12 P&S, so here’s what I got:
100% crop right about eclipse start:

You can’t really see much of the eclipse at this size, but this gives an idea of the cloud cover and the fortuitous break thereof:

A view through the trees to give some visual interest:

And the last view we got before the clouds swallowed up the sun again:

ParticipantI second (third?) that opinion, Yugoboy.
As for me, I’m headed out of town again Friday so preparing for that takes me out of this one. And being out of town next week and away from my record & CD collection takes me out of next week’s, too, which is a real bummer as I’ve been looking forward to that one for a long time (evidently not forward enough or I’d already have it done, though, right?).
Kes, I suspect that a TFer will step up for you, but if not, I’ll OBO.
While on the subject of being out of town, any San Diego farktographers out there who’d like to meet up some evening next week (other than Farktographer – you’re still out of the country, right)?
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantWow, that looks like something I’d expect to see on a NASA page, rav. What kind of filter do you put in front of the scope to get that kind of shot?
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantThis means that Rav and I are Farktographers of the year right?
Absolutely! And as last year’s winner, you need to let me know where to forward the tiara and sash (I’ll let you two decide who gets what). 😆
// Seriously, though, congrats to you both, and to U-Man for yet another combined win.

ParticipantOh, and on average, I’d guess I probably vote for about half of the entries in any given contest.
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantDang you all, I don’t really have time for this but you piqued my curiousity. 😉
So, here’s a chart that shows the percentage of total votes and when they were cast for all contests since 2010-Oct-27, He’s a Fun Guy (the first contest I scraped in real time). The blue bars (left axis) show the percentage of total votes cast in each 15-minute slot while the gray background shows the accumulated percentage (right axis).
10.6% of votes are cast within the first hour of the contest going live; within 4 hours, 21.3% of votes have been cast; by 12 noon Thurs, it’s 48.6%; and by end of day Thurs (midnight Friday), it’s 69.6%. So, if you care about votes, even a little delay will cost you.

ParticipantAny recommendations for hyperlink color? Brighter blue? Red?
The background is actually a dark denim weave with a hint of blue. I could probably lighten that for monitors that don’t have good low-end acuity.
Either of those colors would be fine as long as they’re a bit lighter. Take a look at my site linked above and see if you like either of the colors there. The red is #C00000 and the blue links are #6090C0. Another alternative would be a bold light gray (#E0E0E0 or #C0C0C0). That way it blends more with the existing text but still stands out a little.
I’ve got dual LCD monitors, one fairly new and one several years old. I can see the denim hatch fine on the new one but just barely on the old one, so maybe just a little lightening.

ParticipantYugoboy, I take the same approach as orionid on my photo site. I don’t have anything larger than 1024×768 (800×600 in some cases). Unlikely that anyone’s gonna use that commercially, so I don’t sweat personal use.
