ParticipantAgreed, that’s a nice website. Did you start with a CMS or is that built from scratch? It’s pretty responsive – who do you use for ASP.NET hosting?
I do non-web .NET dev, C#, SQL whatever (express/2005/2008). My BiblioStats site is my first real foray into web dev. I enjoy working with it; wish I had more time to play.
Yeah, VB6… I do everything in C# now, but it was the shiznit for UI back in the day. I used to do C,C++ with VB3/4/5/6 for UI apps. Even used VB1 for DOS for one project many moons ago.

ParticipantSome pretty good stuff in there, ‘Cuda. You seem to have a pretty good eye.
Didn’t I read that you do software, too? Good to have another code warrior around. What’s your platform?

Participantzincprincess is out that way, Malivon. Her profile says Knoxville.

ParticipantI’m the reverse – I am a native Texan but have lived most of my life in OK. Sounds like maybe you’re near my point of origin, Big Spring. I think chupathingie’s in the general vicinity, too, but a bit north, closer to Amarillo. Of course, “near” is a relative term when talking about cities in Texas.

ParticipantWelcome, Malivon. There’s lots of good advice here and a lot of people have been down your same path.
ps, it seems like maybe ‘Cuda and I are Homies. I live near Granbury, looks like you might be up north of Dallas?
Didn’t know you were near Dallas, fluffy. I was just down there a few weeks ago for the Armed Forces Bowl. I’m sure you recognize one of my shots this week – it’s from that trip from the window of my hotel.

ParticipantElsinore will get ya fixed up, Barracuda. I see that you got your feet wet in the contests with In Deep Shadow, so welcome to the forums!

ParticipantThe timing of this one worked out well because I had very little time to play this week. Bascially went through a few folders and said, “good enough.” A few bees here.

ParticipantI tried doing a search about this PIPA stuff, but all I found was a bunch of sites devoted to some british lady’s posterior
No, it’s more about America’s posterior; i.e., Congress! 🙂 PIPA and SOPA are more or less the same thing, except one originated in the House of Representatives and the other in the Senate. Both of them are poorly thought out knee-jerk reactions provoked by the big $ of the MPAA and RIAA.

ParticipantThis is too easy ennuipoet.
I CAN TELL BY THE PIXELS
Well, that and having seen quite a few photos in your time, right?
ennuipoet, I think it’s all going to have to be on the honor system. I don’t think we have to worry about any of us regulars (at least I hope not), and we can’t have Elsinore doing forensic analysis on every entry, so unless it’s just in-your-face blatant, we’ll have to take everybody’s word for it.

ParticipantFor me, part of the fun and creativity is in post processing. I so want to tweak these pics just a little bit…
Wow, could I have heard myself saying that. Probably 75% of the time I spend on a contest isn’t on selecting shots, but rather tweaking each candidate to “perfection” prior to selecting. Which sometimes leads to a little internal “psychosis” when I compare before and after, see that there’s really no perceptible difference, and then convince myself that that 45 minutes was still totally worth it. 😆 🙄
///like Elsinore, I shoot in jpeg/RAW double-save.
I started in JPG only, moved to RAW+JPG for a while until I got comfortable enough with RAW, and now shoot only in RAW, mostly for the reason above – I know I’m going to be tweaking it anyway! 🙂
Neither of my point n shoot Canons do Raw files.
That was one of the requirements when I went looking for a P’nS for “less serious stuff” last year. I’ve been pretty happy with it. At least one of my entries for this contest is going to be from it.

ParticipantAnd now we return to our favorite topic: How has the addition of Funny votes affected overall voting?
If we consider only Best votes, it appears to have had a slight negative effect on this contest. Looking at average votes/entry, we have the following historical values:
- All contests: 9.81
- Since 2009: 11.43
- Since 2010: 11.72
- Since 2011: 12.90
With Best votes only, this contest’s value is (574/56) = 10.25. Combining Best (574) and Funny (278), the average is 15.21. If we counted Funny votes at half the value of Best votes, we’d get close to the recent historical average at (574 + 278/2)/56 = 12.73.
That said, I’m not sure that either value (Best alone or combined) is statistically significantly different enough to make judgements just yet. I’ve created a couple of scatter charts to show where these values appear vs other contests. The charts are large, so I’m just going to link them instead of embedding them here. Within both charts, the point labeled “Bacon” is Best votes, while the point labeled “Combined” is Best+Funny votes.
Here is the Total Votes vs Entry Count chart. And here is the Votes/Entry vs Entry Count chart.

ParticipantCongrats to fluffybunny on the individual (his first!) and combined wins. The Weekly Reports post has been updated with the latest stats. The Combined Vote Results post has been updated to show what this contest would look like if we combined best & funny votes.
Note that aspidites just crossed the minimum entry threshold to appear on overall average lists and now does so in several categories.

ParticipantYou know, U-Man, somewhere on some forum on the internets is a thread with the topic “What’s the most WTF thing you’ve seen” and someone in that thread is describing seeing some guy haul a professional camera, tripod, and flash into a gas station restroom… 😆
Seriously, though, kudos on the chutzpah. That’s dedication, my friend.

ParticipantYeah, bitching about boobies on Fark is kinda like going to the circus and complaining about all the clowns, no?
