I shot some stuff this afternoon, trying to capture the redonkulous housing market in the DC suburbs. Went to a couple of developments of McMansions… one still under construction and one that’s complete and less than a year old. The complete one sucked up what was farmland and the development is named, ironically, “The Preserve”. Not sure if the pics from that one will be OK to post, it was getting late in the afternoon and I was shooting from the drivers seat of the car trying not to get arrested.

😆 Ummm, well, I actually do it in sections and not if it’s hot and melty. I just nibble the chocolate off, scrape off the nougat, and then bite off the caramelly peanuts, repeat.

We’re kindred spirits. That’s how I enjoy a 3 Musketeers bar (don’t do peanuts, so no Snickers here).

Anything else you want to know about me?

Of course, now that this thread is 7 months old and you’ve probably already found a great solution you’ve been using for months.

You’d think that, but you’d be wrong.

I do things the easy way these days: shoot everything five or six times with various settings assuming at least one of them will be usable. With the pugs it’s not always that easy since they have limited patience for sitting still in the face of click (fiddle) click (fiddle) click (fiddle) etc etc.

If you’re looking at Nikon you can start out with the D50 or D70S. I think it’s perfect for starters and intermediates. I’ll admit to having some bias as we shoot with Nikons (D100 for me, D70S for the missus), and have no experience with any of the other cameras mentioned in other posts.

I’ve become a big fan of the aforementioned generic HDD enclosures and standard drives that can be swapped in and out with relative ease. I have one for 2.5″ drives (I seem to go through laptops about once a year so there’s plenty of drives to go through) and just got one for 3.5″ drives. Have no experience with dedicated external drives, though.

Good time to buy hardware, too. Picked up a D70S for the missus this week, fun fun fun!

Can we have “Forks” formally nominated as a theme? What with the utensils and with the things in the road, this could be fun.

    Seconded!

My personal style is race cars on a race track. Not exactly photo contest material but that never stopped me before.

I, uh, don’t recognize most of those names, and the ones I do, I couldn’t look at a pic and say “hey that looks like Andre Kertesz’ work”.

This should come as no surprise considering it is me we’re talking about.

I’d like to shoot something like Richard Fegley would, but the wife won’t go for it.

I don’t know nothing about (man I start a lot of posts off with this disclaimer) ISO settings. But I play a lot with shutter speed when shooting moving cars. In sunny conditions I’ll set the shutter to 1/1000 and that’ll freeze pretty much everything. From there you can experiment with available light and aperture to get the preferred amount of blur; for example, you might want the car body to be crisp but the wheels still moving, so back off that 1/1000 to 1/640 maybe.

Bear in mind you’re taking advice from what is very much still an amateur, but an amateur who can fake it pretty good.

/off to do some light reading on ISO settings

For some reason a lot of those links aren’t working for me but the ones that are, are very good.

One of the things I want to do very much is shoot fireworks. But I picked a terrible time of year to decide this, would have been much more convenient to stumble on this idea back in June.

It took me over half an hour to go through the thread and do my civic duty this afternoon. And then there’s, as Mr Mofo said yesterday, those poor dialuppers.

Limiting to two submissions is good; one is better. With a new contest each week and the occasional repeat contest there’ll most likely be good opportunities to use potential submissions #2 and #3.
