/Also, it’s Plama, just fyi.
sorry, i’m going with the fat finger excuse since i did look at it before typing. and somehow missed it on preview.

ParticipantI haven’t touched a film camera in over a decade, when I was in high school. I’m scared of the quality of photos I’ll be able to take now that I’m so digital, hah.
while the mechanics have changed is some ways and the post processing certainly has the basics are the same, control the light coming in and pesto. any film camera which has match needle metering on through full auto is very similar to today’s DSLRs.
IMO today’s cameras have replaced all the stuff you used to have to keep in your head with menus for different situations. now the software does a lot of the work if you want it to. auto bracketing is one example. another useful current tool is continuous exposure built in. far easier than buying and using a winder or motor drive. also easier than a 150 shot back – it sure is easy to go through a 36 exposure roll with a winder. trust me on this 🙂

ParticipantFWIW, I don’t think any creative artform should be constrained to specific technologies. So I don’t understand the hostility towards people that like cheap cameras or other methods that introduce odd, sometimes random, uncontrollable, unpredictable effects. I like them, but also like high quality, very accurate cameras too. But I don’t see the conflict in having and using both.
And while I find just about any artificially inflated market for a art (or products in general) absurd, if makes people happy to buy Lomography prints for too much money, it’s no skin off my nose. If I ever run into some smug SOB copping an attitude about cheap camera superiority, I’d certainly make it clear that I thought they were an ass. But I wouldn’t accept the smugness the other direction if I was using a Lomo or showing photo’s I’d take with a Lomo.
Well said.
horse shit. if i have a D3X and one of these $10,250 lenses i am obviously superior in many ways. my photos will simply reek of “art” and be virtually priceless.
your Lomo OTOH reeks of “hipness” which we all know is absurd on it’s face.

Participantthey are slaved. see sleeping‘s original post and the link for them.

Participanti did some googling and found Another benefit of using this technique is that it is legal under most of the post-processing rules of web-based photography contest sites such as DPChallenge. and while U-Man is right that i’m not a fan of post processing it appears to be legal.
and frankly helps the photo IMO.

Participantmy best is #495 for “Me Love You Long Time.”
you joined in july of 2010 and i’m member 40 or 41 and have been here since jan 2006. my best finish is #451. i’d say you were doing ok.
and thanks for the stats.

Participantthat is pretty slick.

Participantthanks for the responses. my P&Ss both have it but the results are underwhelming. and short. i had a full sized VHS camera at one time and guess i got spoiled by the in camera tittling and other features. bought the panasonic because i wanted another video camera and it was on a <50% sale. i've only used it a few times so the cheap price worked out 🙂 it's small enough that i can carry it with the DSLR if i plan to shot video.
Curious
Participantslightly off topic questions. do any of you have video capabilities in your DSLRs? do you use it?
i just don’t understand the selling point behind “OMG it’s got 1080 HD video” in a DSLR.

ParticipantZero_Exponent i have a fairly nice panasonic camcorder with the snapshot feature. it has an xD card for that capture. it takes nice pictures but the file sizes don’t allow for big prints.

ParticipantJust don’t confuse the people that do it for fun, by resurrecting antique cameras, with the people that think they need to pay a gazillion dollars for a crappy plastic camera (like the Blackbird Fly for just $119 – I could do the same thing with a Brownie reflex from ebay for $10 and a piece of black tape). And the photos would be higher quality.
Heh – Holgas are fun, but got old after a couple rolls. If light leaks are so much charm, why do I go batshiat insane with black tape to eliminate them on my bakelite brownies?
i don’t. looked at the blackbird fly website. they admit it’s a toy but want $120 for it. no thanks. the photos in their gallery are mostly crap. i may end up with crap but i sure don’t set out to make it.
re holgas and other light leaking stuff. again no thanks. i spent an inordinate amount of time trying to find a light leak in a “tower” TLR camera. it’s a cheapie sears btw. finally a camera repair shop in austin found it. a missing tiny screw at the take up winder. turned out to be a decent camera.

ParticipantI figured out on Saturday that my old scanner is older than they thought – they stopped supporting it at WinXP. Oops.
I had plans, too. Ah well.
i was given a 8.5 x 14 microtek scanner after katrina. just the scanner, had to find a scsi adapter card for it. put it in the 98SE box because the software required 98 or earlier. so recently i built another computer and ran out of space for towers. to keep 98SE had to dual boot* the 98SE HHD in one of my XP Pro HDD boxes. since the hardware is attached when i boot XP it sees it. lo and behold i was able to install both the scanner software and an old sipix camera/webcam in XP and use them.
*it’s actually a triple boot; 98SE, XP Pro and Ubuntu 10.10. BTW i hate grub2.

Participantthe bats drinking are awesome, thanks.

ParticipantA lot of people find that crappy optic and a dearth of creative control is a “Thing”. They would tell you that the utter lack of quality is an inherent feature of the the film, they even have a movement or something. They call it lomography. I have a name for that sort of thing, but I can’t use it in a family friendly setting 😀
i’d seen that word but went to their about us home page. ouch. that and holgas i just don’t understand. sorry farktography holga fans.
of course i think andy warhol was a scam artist so what do i know.
