Man, if you had BIF (ball in frame) on that Mastroianno @ first shot it would be magazine quality stuff. Excellent work.

Does the rust have to be iron based, or would patina’d copper/brass etc. do?

I will default to this reference, as it reflects what I originally had in mind,..

    Wikipedia:

“Rust is a general term for describing iron oxides. In colloquial usage, the term is applied to red oxides, formed by the reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture. There are also other forms of rust, such as the result of the reaction of iron and chloride in an environment deprived of oxygen, such as rebar used in underwater concrete pillars, which generates green rust. Several forms of rust are distinguishable visually and by spectroscopy, and form under different circumstances.[1] Rust consists of hydrated iron(III) oxides Fe2O3?nH2O and iron(III) oxide-hydroxide FeO(OH)?Fe(OH)3. Given sufficient time, oxygen, and water, any iron mass will eventually convert entirely to rust and disintegrate. Surface rust provides no protection to the underlying iron, unlike the formation of patina on copper surfaces.

Rusting is the common term for corrosion of iron and its alloys, such as steel. Many other metals undergo equivalent corrosion, but the resulting oxides are not commonly called rust.”

Short answer: Iron based, not copper, brass etc.

My new 50mm f1.4 arrives tomorrow, and I have plans for it. 🙂

    Yay! New toys!

Are you going to leave it out in the rain so it rusts and then make a photograph of it? That would be cool. Stupid, but cool.

We are going from a species of tool creators to a species of tools,..

That good sir, is the single most eloquent, succinct and lucid sentence encapsulating 15 years of me ranting. I am keeping that one on a plaque, my business card and on my bumper.

You and me both, but I see losing them as of the cost of a better system.

Congrats Farktographer on your first win and on the sweep of both individual and combined. And now for something completely different…

Don’t have a lot of time to go into detail right now ’cause I just finished it and have to get to bed, but the stats reports are now online through the Contestants/Reports menu. We now have 17 different categories in 3 different time periods to see how badly U-Man kicks our collective @sses (seriously – that’s 51 lists and he’s #1 on 40 of them). Ranking is also displayed on the individual stats pages.

    Awesome work CISS, many thanks.

Conga-rats Farktographer. I particularly liked Ravnostic’s “Less Than” and Elsinore’s “Culbertson Staircase”, but there were a multitude of excellent works.

This seems relevant here. It’s a big help to anyone under light-polluted skies. Old, but the info is still useful.

Excellent find,.. I had never seen it explained so simply before with a logical basis. Most of the time you see thumb rules and recipes. This was quite useful in the general sense.

Conga-rats on the print sale, I wondered about whether random people would buy prints from such an account.
I thought about setting up with Zenfolio some time ago and still may do it.

I don’t mind selling but I don’t want hassle. I am trying to keep photography in its own little happy place and I wonder if selling prints would start me down the slippery slope of making it more work than play.

Nice one of the fountain Cuda. I read somewhere that hawks don’t like to be stared at and they see a lens as a big eye. I guess it’s OK if your moving though, I rode the Trinity trail system a couple weeks ago and quite slowly rolled past one standing in the drainage ditch not 10 feet away. He watched me like a hawk but stood his ground. What tele were you using?

I’m going to be looking for a nice fast prime between 30-50mm as well I think. Recommendations gladly considered. This shot was taken at 70mm/f2.8 with the 70-200mm L.

I researched the Sigma 30/1.4 pretty extensively about 6 months ago. A lot of high praise and pixel peepers were happy with it, helluva deal if it will do what you want ($450). Never got one but still might someday. I decided I would get more use from a 10-22 3.5/4.5.

Compares nicely to 35/1.4L (slightly softer yes but is it three times the cost softer?):
