ParticipantCongrats all around, well done!

ParticipantI like to do fashion, street, budoir. People have always been my favorite subject. I spent most of the time I dedicate to this hobby of mine making photographs of persons. I like directed and spontaneous shots, in my experience, some persons, specially when they come in couples, need to be directed, while others are great at being themselves, so to speak. I like to be in the studio, where things are under your control, but I also like to go outdoors and get some real colors. My wife is a social photographer so I get to work as a ‘second photographer’ from time to time, that has been very helpful to my photography and social skills. I used to be a blast at parties. =)
However, I wish I could do street more often. If only I could learn to handle the fear that grips me as soon as I aim my camera at a complete stranger, maybe I could get a half-decent shot. I’m working on it. I grab a camera, take the bus/subway, hit downtown, get back home eight hours later empty-handed. At least all that walking is good for my health, or so they say.
For being timid you have some pretty nice portraiture,.. spontaneous, street or otherwise. I especially like:

Keep up the good work.fluffybunny
ParticipantSo Kes,
Which Zenfolio account type did you go with and why? Do you use that account for hosting all your images (farktography, personal, professional, etc) and if not, why not? I’m getting closer to needing to buy online storage and I’m pretty sure I can do better than Imageshack. While I haven’t been disappointed by their free service, I’m wondering if there isn’t a better fit for me.

ParticipantI’m with Rav, I like that last one the best. Excellent portraiture. Here’s to lots of discoveries on the trip.

ParticipantSince this thread has come back up, I’ll give my limited input. A few months ago I bought a Vanguard 263AT: http://www.adorama.com/VGT263AB100.html from my local shop.
I haven’t used it much, but I really like the way the center shaft comes out at various angles. It’s pretty big and heavy so I haven’t taken it walking with me, my slingshot pack is heavy enough. I used it yesterday for some macro shots of water on flower leaves and it lets you get about any angle you want. I like the flexibility of the ballhead, but at the same time it can be touchy if I am trying to get a straight frame set up.Man if I didn’t already have a tripod I would be getting that one. I made some addons for mine that accomplish the articulated neck idea but they are not as elegant as that. Maybe someday.

ParticipantExcellent photography ‘Cuda, can you post the Farktography safe version so I can see what the difference is?

ParticipantI’ve been looking at this the last couple of days. http://www.adorama.com/DOZX600B300.html Seems like it would be just what I need. I don’t really need the super short legs when collapsed and this thing is pretty light compared to my old busted one that was really made for video cameras.
Damn. At that price, it’s a steal… It’s about a third of the weight of my aluminum tripod for the same height and load capacity. You may or may not end up wanting a different head, though… Ball heads are, uhh, unique. some people swear by them, some hate them. Personally, I think they have their place but I don’t go out of my way for one.
/random, similar topic, don’t feel like searching right now: Anyone know of a motorized GEM for a standard (3/8-18 ) or half-inch tripod that’ll mount directly to an slr?
I have never seen a ball head in person so it will be a learning experience. I would prefer to play with what ever I get in advance but the nearest camera shop is probably Vegas or Reno. So close to 240 miles either way
I’m one of those that swears by a ball head.
I started with this one:
Slik Standard Ballhead II – Supports 11 lbs
http://www.adorama.com/SLSBH.htmlBut Adorama has a great deal on this one so I upgraded:
Vanguard ABH-340L
http://www.adorama.com/VGABH340L.htmlThe new one is elliptical and you can set the tension as a variable, the mounted gear can then be moved by hand but not by gravity. Pretty sweet, especially given its price. Granted your example is probably a better deal overall in that it is a CF tripod and ball head, but thought I’d share my recent experience FWIW.

ParticipantThanks rav and yugo. I wonder what’s up with this monitor.
Sorry about your cats Elsinore 🙁
Not sure if it’s supposed to be but on my monitor it looks underexposed by maybe 4-5 stops. I can see the nose though.
I feel your pain Els. Coyotes have taken all of our cats since moving here,…
Bobe, Bella, Kingsley and Penny. Can’t figure out how to stop them (inside only cats are a non option, they were inside/outside cats).fluffybunny
ParticipantLooks to me like Jack Kerouac needs to prune three entries out of six, do I see that correctly?
fluffybunny
ParticipantHave not researched the lens at all but this is on CL today:
http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/pho/2992536870.html
Sigma 18-200 OS DC 3.5-6.3
Seems like all the specs you’re looking for.
fluffybunny
ParticipantAre you really removing your 55-200 to get at the 28-55mm range on the 18-55 lens all that much, vs the 18-28mm range? Personally, I couldn’t manage without something considerably wider for walking around purposes….
That’s kinda what I had in the back of my head when I suggested the 70-300. You can (most of the time) “zoom with your feet” to cover the missing 55-70mm if you had that pair, but it’s hard to use that tried and true technique to get the shots you can at 300mm or 18mm. While a second body is a good thing sometimes (events and action), I don’t think I would hike with a second.
fluffybunny
ParticipantCISS, yes good call on colorizing the columns. Thanks again for all the work you do on stats.
fluffybunny
ParticipantYeah I’m with you on those limitations, everything about this hobby is compromise. Here’s to dreaming of long, fast glass.
fluffybunny
ParticipantNot that I did exhaustive research on it, but this was in contention for me at one point before I bought the Sigma 100-300 f4:
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
I realize it’s not as wide as what you quoted, but it is in the same $ range and got good reviews.
I think if part of your hiking is wildlife, you’ll wish you had more than 135mm.
If it was me, I’d take this and a wide zoom in a pouch.
YMMV. IANAL. BFFBBQOMGWTF.
