The focus was my main issue with it. I know its a really narrow DOF, and how challenging it can be to get the focus spot on. But missing the face just loses a lot

I use the filter mostly on my 18-55…

I have a +10 screw on macro filter. I did a lot of my macro type pictures with it. If you do it right they have pretty decent quality I think. They are a bit soft on the focus.

My current lens line up is on a Canon XT body (which is pretty decent, but I wish its ISO was less noisy in the upper range. I have the 18-55 Kit lens, a “nifty fifty” 50mm f1.8, and the Sigma 70-300mm APO DG lens.
I have been pretty happy with my 70-300. Of the Canon, Tamron and Sigma, the research I did indicated Sigma had the best quality and was in the middle for price range.
I’m looking at a True Macro lens

Any ideas on if the 2x works with the Sigma 70-300mm ? I was considering getting one to use with that lens. Could be interesting to stick it on my nifty fifty assuming it would fit.
