ParticipantThat’s a good question. If we need to, we can make a graphic with the non-changing Farktography rules in it, that we would just post after the pertinent weekly information.
Kestrana
ParticipantYeah I don’t think so either. Tough call, which is why I’d just say let the voters sort it out. I’ll send a message to SS on FB and Flickr and see if he’s available to pop in here and review the discussion before the contest is live tonight.

ParticipantWell my one concern with allowing humans in animal costumes is whether or not SilverStag would consider humans TO BE animals (which we are biologically). He was very clear in the theme discussion that animals and animal products were out.
Kestrana
ParticipantI hope SilverStag checks in tomorrow to resolve some of these questions. To me, that would be within the spirit of the theme without actually being in the letter of the theme, i.e. I’d let the voters sort it out. But I’d like to hear others thoughts on that.

ParticipantYes theyre still Animalia

ParticipantFB right now Bibliostats tracks the participants for Farktography contests only, ennuipoet is interested to know when the database for Fark photoshop contests might be online.

ParticipantSo orionid is in VA beach until after contest is live. I’ll let him know that there’s a question about the theme if I speak to him, but in case he doesn’t have access to this in time, I’ll just say, don’t make it too complicated. “Primary subject” doesn’t have to be anything in particular – it can just be the area that’s clearly in focus should be up close to you. I think the most important part of the description is “where detail and intimacy are key”. I think the imaginary “ideal” photo is one that actually encompasses the farther reaches beyond the subject, but those farther reaches are hazy, indistinct, bokehed or otherwise only an essence or suggestion of what is beyond.
I’ll try to give two examples here:
This one is probably the limits of what would fit the theme and I’m really torn about whether or not it would be useable (but I’ve already used it so it’s not an issue):

Participant2. Goddammit.

ParticipantYeah I was super irritated about the change also but unfortunately our friends here use FB for party invites and group coordination. Also most of my extended family uses that as the primary way we talk to each other. My aunt doesn’t even have a phone, she just has the internet.

ParticipantIs the “freezing” limited to shutter speed, or is flash acceptable?
Here’s why I ask: http://webs.lanset.com/rcochran/flash/hss.html
I hope so because pretty much all my high speed pictures are done with flash not shutter speed

ParticipantBetter late than never! I was looking forward to this one, and I almost missed it!
Indeed, and welcome to the forum!

ParticipantAlso as a last comment, rav‘s tilt-shift also wasn’t done in camera, it was done with a vintage lens he modified to take tilt-shift images.

ParticipantKestrana….your Shenandoah shot….North District, near Mt. Marshall, or Central District, just south of Mary’s Rock tunnel?
It’s looking almost due east from the eastern flank somewhere north of Thornton Gap. Very close to where the historical marker talks about the squatters who lived in the park during the Prohibition era and Chimney trail that takes you through their ruins (which I have yet to walk).

ParticipantGot it. In camera changes to coloration are okay but similar changes in photoshop are not.
Sort of… if you adjust your in camera white balance and saturation to create unrealistic results, that wouldn’t be okay either. But if you use a filter with your camera, or you use a camera or film specifically designed to create strange colors (like orionid) that’s ok.

ParticipantI have a technical question for the “judges.” I don’t want it to cause any problems, I just don’t understand the difference between what Orionid and sometimes Soosh do to their photos that make them unnaturally colored and what U-Man did to his photo that had the extreme silver sheen. There are times when I would like to change the coloration on my photo, but I hold back for fear it will be pulled. I know whatever is done has to be done to the entire photo, but I would like to hear how you rule on this type of change to ones photo.
In orionid‘s case he didn’t do anything to the photo – he converted his d50 to take photos in the infrared spectrum. Essentially, you use your white balance in camera to select what color is white – so if you set it on grass, green would be white, and it adjusts other colors in the spectrum along the color wheel accordingly.
As for U-Man I don’t know, but he could be using Nik effects, arguably the best black and white conversion software available. There are so many ways to adjust black and white, some might have a silvery sheen to them, but I’m not sure exactly what you’re referring to. I’m sure he can shed more light on it though.
