ParticipantDidn’t someone recently mention that Fark had upped the allowable file size? Can anybody remember what the limit might be now? I will just go by the old size limit if I have to but would love to post higher quality file size.

ParticipantSweet moon picture Rav! and yes it was about Astrophotography but we got to talkin about darkest skies and kinda sidetracked into maybe camping in the darkest skies I have ever seen.

ParticipantWell yesterday I said we had almost no precipitation this last year and this morning it’s snowing pretty hard! Almost an inch of snow in the last hour. Which is very good. for the area needing water and for my photography once it mellows out a bit.
I agree with Orionid ya just need to harness the energy of the shockwaves and respect the useful power of them also.
also Damn I wish I could wake and bake right now. Gotta stay sober in case some job wants a pee test before hiring me. 😥lokisbong
ParticipantThe horses and burros at the hot springs are about 20 miles away, close to Goldfield Nv. There is an alkali lake bed nearby and a bit down the same road is a lithium mine and Silver Peak Nv. the last time I was there was this last summer but the critters live there all year round from what I gather. the exploring sounds like lots of fun to me. I have a 22 pistol and a Ruger 10/22 rifle and just for kicks I could even bring the cap n ball 44 with loading supplies for a dozen or two shots.

ParticipantA camping trip would be totally doable on my end. I even own a 4 person sized tent if needed. we would probably have to bring some kind of portable fire pit type thing and for sure we would have to bring our own wood supply. It is super dry out there even now. I think we have had less than an inch of rain in the last year and less than an inch of snow so far this year. the spot I was thinking about can be driven to in a regular car. it’s a paved road right up to the hot springs and it is well off the highway. The local astronomy club does star parties there once in a while.

ParticipantMan I would love it if a bunch of you showed up here! I even know where there are hot springs miles from town with wild horses and burros running around the last time I was out there. There also pronghorn antelope live here and I saw some of those not far from where I am thinking about. The only thing to worry about is the rattlesnakes if you show up in warmer weather but the southwest living people already know about those right?

ParticipantSo the church steeple sticking up over a hill will work? I have some cool shots of that idea but the rest of the church could pass for an 80s government building. Real boring to look at and I have not been inside. It’s a Mormon church so I really don’t want to ask them if it’s cool to go in on the one day a week I have seen people there. Not my cup o tea so to speak.

ParticipantCentral Nevada is rather good for the dark skies also.Tonopah is advertized as #1 stargazing destination in America by USA Today. LOL Not sure I would go that far but it is by far the darkest skies I have ever experienced even in town you can usually see the whole Little Dipper on a good clear night. I just wish the weather was clearer lately. It’s been kinda hazy for the last few weeks every time I want to go out shooting star trails. The other night I tried to see Uranus next to Venus and it was just hazy enough where I couldn’t see it. Venus was visible but I couldn’t make out Uranus. Hopefully its clear by dark tonight but I highly doubt it since right now it looks like it wants to snow.

ParticipantThoughts on these two?
I think I like 1 also but I cannot say why exactly the other one is all rustic and cool too but 1 just seems to jump out at me more.

ParticipantDamn Orionid! Always upping the ante huh? I would say that’s kosher but I am certainly not the only voice on here nor am I a photography expert. I still want to see the finished picture either way just to see how it comes out.

ParticipantI don’t have the gear to see it by myself either but I have a local astronomy club that does stuff in the park a block from home so I might get to witness the transit

ParticipantThat’s a very valid point Kestrana. Small businesses will be s.o.l. for that part of their regular income. Like there are not enough problems with the economy for small businesses without throwing something like this into the mix. and It could set a precedent Canon could follow too. Gods I hope not but it wouldn’t surprise me.

ParticipantI had some friends who ran a computer store when I was living on the coast and they charged around 45 buck an hour no matter what they were doing. I got a wee bit of a discount but not much.Of course the next closest store was almost 100 miles away so I think they could get away with high prices. I also prefer the build it yourself option because everyone I know who has bought a dell or hp or any of the major name brands has had bad luck with them. My computer is on the third motherboard in the same almost 10 year old box but next time I gotta fix that because the usb ports on the front are shorting out and causing the damn thing to spontaneously reboot if any thing is plugged into them.

ParticipantThat’s too funny. I checked this morning and it was still on the sheeple one.

ParticipantI sent my farkback complaining about the whole vote system but specifically the unvote thing on the fifth and I was very polite and even said thanks and have a nice day or something like that
