ParticipantAlso, orionid, that Akaka falls picture is unbelievable-all my photos of it had a blown-out sky, and I just couldn’t get the color balance right for that incredible green. I may soon have a lot more time to practice on it, though…
Thanks!
The sun was high overhead to my left and barely forward, and I used a Cokin graduated density filter at a slight angle to horizontal. I was following the shadow of the valley more than anything else, just to keep the sun from blowing out the top right side. You can see the graduation if you look close.Otherwise, I had the camera set for vivid saturation (one of the few times I’ve deliberately taken it out of standard), and brought up the contrast in post by tweaking curves.
Are you headed out island way? Would the scopes at Mauna Kea have anything to do with that? I are envious.
God, I love GND filters. My #1 favorite photography tool.
Also, yes the Mauna Kea scopes have a lot to do with the fact that I’m headed out to Hawaii. I just got an offer from the graduate program at UH Manoa, and it looks pretty likely (not 100%, but pretty likely) that I’ll be spending the next 5-6 years there getting a Ph.D. (if all goes well).
Nice!

ParticipantAlways take the lens out of the box and inspect it before buying. If they won’t let you inspect it, buy it somewhere else.
That’s what I like about B&H whenever I’m in NYC. “I’m looking for a fisheye for a nikon, preferably full-frame, but DX is okay.” “Here, try these three, see how you like them.”
If you don’t hook it up to your camera for a few test shots, they look at you funny.A good camera shop will put the lens on a demo camera for you if you don’t have yours handy.

ParticipantI don’t mind the one use rule. It keeps things fresh and makes us get out and shoot. That being said I wouldn’t have a problem with the “Top Ten” rule or the “Three Year” rule either.

SB900 Speedlight
Nikkor 18-105 f3.5 – 5.6
Sigma 17-50 f2.8I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on a D7000, body only. I’ve already got a set of SB-800s and lenses I’ve been using with my D80 – and my D80’s about ready to give up the ghost after several years of stormchasing.
It’s a really really nice camera. I didn’t make the switch without a ton of research first. I was really on the fence for along time between the Canon 7D and The D7000. Overall I decided to go with the camera that is best suited to the type of photos I take. The Nikon has superior AF & metering to the Canon. The Canon has better video but I am a photographer not a movie maker. In the end though the biggest dealbreaker on the Canon was high ISO performance. I am blown away by the ISO 3200 & 6400 images I have been seeing so far. I’m going to a show shortly so I will be putting it to the test tonight. I will post a few samples tomorrow.

ParticipantMy photography can be a source of contention between my wife and I. I have tried to get her interested in it to no avail for a while now.
I bought wifey a nifty Fuji s5600 or somesuch, and she loves taking pictures. IMHO some of her stuff shows a better eye than mine, but her shots just go onto her laptop, and occasionally to FB…
The best way to get disinterested wives to either get interested ( or let you spend ludicrous amounts of cash on, an time with, your gear ) is to take some great snapshots of the kid(s) and her family…she will be putty in your hands… airplane tickets to farflung destinations don’t hurt either… “Remember to capture the memories, dear !!”[/b][/u]
She has zero interest in photography beyond critiquing my band shots.I did however stick a video camera in her hand a while back at a show. She is starting to get some notoriety for her videos, so that helps to keep her interested in the band stuff and keeps her from whining too much.

ParticipantThat’s cool! You don’t really have to start at the beginning of the year. I never thought of A-Z photography. That sounds like a cool project too!
